Kerala backwater houseboat?

Any advice on renting a houseboat for some exploration of the Kerala backwaters?

Enjoyed a couple of nights on a houseboat in 2007. We pre-booked after a lot of net reading but there were absolute masses of boats available when we arrived. Our biggest hassle was getting around and buying beer & wine to take with us.We had separate air con bedroom & 3 locals looking after the 2 of us.

Any new updates on kerala houseboat options?

Also, would anyone over there take credit cards? Or should i be carrying cash as payment?
