Embarkation cards still required?

Some months ago I remember reading online that steps were being taken to automate parts of the dis/embarkation cards for India. Today at the immigration (emigration?) desk at BOM, the officer didn't even glance at my embarkation card and only took it at the end when I asked if he wanted it.

Have the departure cards been phased out officially?

No, they're still in use... wish they would get rid of them as well.
