Delhi Food Walk
Yes, at first glance, it's a horrible idea! I stumbled across this website while doing research for my trip to New Delhi, but upon doing further research, the organizer of the Delhi Food Walk in Chandni Chowk is very hygienically minded - he brings hand sanitizer and plasticware for everyone.
It's been 3 days, and I'm still alive. I had a blast. The organizer moves at the group's pace, and is more like having dinner with a bunch of friends. Not only does he take the time to describe the food he's ordering for you (and how to eat it), but he brings you deep into Chandni Chowk to areas that tourists don't go. It gave me a good idea of the "real" Delhi. Anyway, if you're interested in doing a food walk, definitely check this out!: www.delhifoodadventure.com |
I spent a lovely 3 hours walking through Chandni Chowk in December, but was too chicken to eat. Next time I will do this. Thanks.

Chandni Chowk brings back some memories!
On the topic of eating street food, when I was in India I broke my promise of not eating such foods and was perfectly fine (for the first 10 days anyway :p). Had some really nice spicy noodle dishes from random street vendors as well as some chai to wash it down. To be honest, you can't guarantee the hygiene standards of any random restaurant you walk into off the street anyway so it's worth a go for the taste experience - especially if you can do it in the context of a tour like this where no doubt the vendors are to some good standard ^ |

I went to India in November 2011 and stayed for three months. The first half of my trip I was too chicken to eat the street food. But after my first experience there was no stopping me. I ate street food a lot but I used some common sense when picking a stall. I ate where the food was freshly prepared rather than where it looked like it was sitting out for a period of time. I ate where there was a crowd rather than at the stand that had no patrons.
Six weeks of eating street food and I never got sick once. I do miss the momos, samosas, aloo tika..... I think the idea of a food guide is great, probably a good way to learn what the different food items are. D. |
Thanks condition one for the rec.
I did this tour a couple weeks ago. Overall, it was a good experience, exactly as you described. However, I think they're a little bit overpriced for what you get, food wise. Nevertheless, for first time visitors, it may be worthwhile. |
