Terminal 3 at DEL handles all international flights as well as domestic flights of Air India, Vistara and Air Asia India. You can transit D-I, I-D, I-I and D-D.

I-I transfer desks are open as of August 2022.

Below are the details for transit within T3.

A. Domestic to international transit at T3:

If both your domestic and international flights are on a single ticket, your baggage will be checked through at the origin airport itself and you should get your onward boarding passes there as well.
At DEL there are 5 ways to get from arrivals to departures (one level up), listed here in order of least walking to most walking.

1. Domestic - intl transfer gate: After you deplane from your domestic flight (or get off the bus) and go down the escalator (or stay on the same level coming from a bus) there is a special facility for transit passengers in the hall with the copper hands on the wall (red gate in the image below). It leads directly to immigration counters and security check after which you can access departure gates, lounges etc. Service on this entry point are hit or miss, but will save you a lot of walking. There are AI and AF-KL agents roaming the queues and will fast track you if running late. However, this only works if you already have your boarding pass for your International flight, have checked your luggage through from your point of origin, and have less than 4 hours between your domestic and international flights. If you are on separate tickets, have more than 4 hours for your international flight, or the lines are too long try one of the other options below.

2. Transfer desk in the middle of the arrivals concourse: always crowded. Here you could theoretically drop your bags and take the lift up to the security or checkin desks. Its a night mare, never used it due to crowding.

3. The escalator & lift on the international end: collect your bags, turn LEFT when you exit the first set of doors after the baggage belt. At the complete end of the concourse a lonely CISF jawan polices that way up. S/he will check if you have a international onward ticket/BP or send you packing to the other ways. Once you go up you get into a glass walled holding pen with yet another CISF checkpoint that will only let you ínto the checkin area if your flight is in 4h or less.
4. Escalator & lift on the domestic end: collect your bags, turn right when you exit the first set of doors after the baggage belt. At the complete end of the concourse a lonely CISF jawan polices that way up. S/he will check if you have a domestic onward ticket/BP or send you packing to the other ways. Once you go up everything is cordoned off and you are shown out the terminal by the CISF guy sitting at the glass door to the checkin area you end up curbside and have to enter the terminal again.

5. Just walking out as if you want to go to Delhi: here you exit the terminal and pretend to be a regular pax arriving in Delhi. Once you exit there are walk escalators where you push your cart on and get transported to the departure level. Select one of the many gates where there are no major lines and enter the checkin area.

B. International to domestic transit at T3:

For Air India I-D flights where your domestic flight is from AI 010-399 or 900-999, you will follow the procedure for I-I transfers (see this for details). Otherwise follow the procedure given below.

For all other flights, you will go through immigration in Delhi. After immigration you have to collect your bags and go through customs. Then follow steps 3, 4 or 5 in the section above.

Security will generally not allow entry into the domestic terminal until T-4 (four hours before the departure of your flight).

Transit hotel: For overnight transit (int'l flight arriving at night and domestic connection departing following morning), the transit hotel within Terminal 3 (IHG Holiday Inn Express) is perfectly acceptable. And the views of the tarmac when having the included breakfast aren't bad. You need to have a domestic flight departing from T3 in order to use it. The T-4 restriction does not apply to use the transit hotel. But it goes for quite a premium in rates over what the other hotels in the area cost (if willing to exit the terminal building for overnight stays). To reach, turn right after Customs and look for the Holiday Inn Express help desk inside the terminal. Staff will escort you to the hotel and help with other formalities.

For other terminals:
T2 is a (long) walk from T3. Exit the terminal, turn left and follow the signs.
T1 is ~8km by road and takes about 15 minutes by taxi. There is also a shuttle bus outside the terminal which is free if you are a woman or have a boarding pass for an onward flight, and costs INR 25 otherwise. There are no airside connections.

C. International to International transfer

After landing look for the board saying "International Transfers" (DO NOT go through immigration).

1. If you are on a single ticket and already have boarding pass in hand with "DT" (Direct Transfer) printed on it, walk past the transfer desks and go through transit security. Then you can proceed to the departure lounges and gates. Note: if your boarding pass does not have "DT" printed on it, you need to talk to the transfer desk, otherwise the I-I security checkpoint will likely not let you through and send you back to the transfer desk.

2. If you have separate tickets or don't have your onward boarding pass in hand, you have to go to the transfer desk where the airline staff will check documents and issue your onward boarding pass. You cannot check-in online or get an e-Boarding Passes for international flights out of India. Check-in generally opens 4 hours before and closes 60-75 minutes before departure. Then go through transit security as in point 1.

3. There are no priority security lanes in transit security so it is advisable to keep adequate time (>2 hrs) between connecting flights even if you are in F or J.

4. If you have separate tickets, in addition it is advisable to hold an Indian visa or e-visa as you may be denied boarding at origin otherwise.

5. A transit hotel for overnight stays (up to 24 hours) is available after transit security.

I am flying CDG-DEL-CMB business class on AI in June (all one ticket), with a 3 hour 40 minute connect time (arrive DEL at 10:00).

I assume that this will be sufficient time for a comfortable transit?

more than sufficient....if you incoming flight is on time then you will end up spending close to 3 hours in a pretty basic ai lounge....

I read that there are “nap rooms” in two Plaza Premium lounges landside in T3, one by the domestic arrivals and one by the international ones; reviews seem a bit mixed but I was wondering if anyone here has tried and can volunteer an opinion on how they are, or if there are any worthy alternatives within T3 landside or airside (domestic). Thanks in advance!

Sadly no alternatives. The T3 domestic PP arrival 'lounge' is your best option. They have a few rooms to sleep in, but they go fast. The seating area is better than the other PP arrivals area but only has six seats which are usually taken by midnight. Domestic T3 airside is bleak, the AI lounge has a nap/resting area with chairs that go semi flat. The PP lounge is under rennovation.

Posting this while spending a 9 hour INTL to Domestic transfer at DEL, Terminal 3.

Flight was supposed to land at 9:30 p.m., with domestic departure at 6:30 a.m. the next morning.

We waked out of the plane at around 10 p.m. We raced out of the plane to beat the immigration lines, and made it through immigration on an e-Visa in about 20 minutes.

Stopped by the Priority Pass Plaza Premium Arrivals Lounge. Looked sad from the outside. Beds were all gone. Did not go inside.

Proceeded to domestic check-in in T3 (one floor up). There is an 8-hour rule. So you can only enter the domestic departures terminal within 8 hours before your scheduled flight. We just cleared it at 10:30 p.m.

No bags to check-in, so we proceeded through security. Took no more than 15 minutes.

There is another Priority Pass Plaza Premium Lounge inside the security area, but I had read that it gets crowded, so I did not bother with it.

Our domestic flight is in Vistara J. So we proceeded to Vistara Lounge. It's okay: functional, but very dated. Was empty when we got here at around 11 p.m. No hot food at that time, but we were offered tea, coffee, drinks and made to order omelet. We joined two seats together in one of the "reserved" areas and got about 3 hours of sleep. (Not sure who it was "reserved" for but nobody questioned our use of the space.)

Hot food came out at around 4 a.m. Food was excellent, lots of variety, very tasty. Made to order masala omelet is a must try.

When we landed, we thought about checking in at the Holiday Inn transit hotel attached to the airport. Online prices were showing $128 for the night. But, we decided to save some money instead. In retrospect, I think we should have gone for the transit hotel. Our thinking was that if we did that, then we have to give ourselves an extra hour or two to make it through security. So at most we would have had like 6 hours in the room.

Taking off in about an hour. Overall, pleasant transit experience.

IMPORTANT WIFI TIP: The GMR free wifi works pretty well. It requires you to enter your phone number, and they will text you a pin. However, if you don't receive the text or if you don't have the ability to receive texts, you can go the information counter and they will get you instructions to get on without having to provide your phone number. This may change, but as of today all you have to do to get WIFI is select India as the country, enter "1122334455" and enter "1234" for the pin.

My Experience - SFO -DEL -BOM

My experience with INT-DOM SFO-DEL-BOM (United- vistara) same ticket, bags checked to final destination (BOM)

Landed DEL in T3, had to go through immigration and customs in DEL. Immigration didn’t take much time and customs as well was smooth.
(since I did 2 unnecessary to-n-fro trips from baggage carousel, Make sure to pickup baggage cart before heading to baggage carousel. Also fragile tagged items come on different carousel, think common for all - it was near the place where I got the cart). As such I had enough layover time so didn’t have to hurry.

Domestic transfer took some time (time from customs to checkin counter). After customs took right for domestic transfer to see a small area. There was not much line with one security personnel checking passport- BP, however after that it was bit of snail pace movement to get into small elevator. With carts max 2-3 people/families could get into it at a time. Also same elevator was being used by airport personnel (mostly to come down from departures). The entry area to elevator also was small.

On departures floor went to vistara counter (far end) to checkin the bags (already tagged to final destination so had no issues, fragile item required going to another nearby security entry point instead of same checkin counter. Also the vistara personnel uses a notebook to make entry of the fragile item being handed over to baggage attendant/transporter person taking through security.

Went thru security, required removing belt, laptops, tablets etc however luckily didn’t have shoe removal hassles.

Vistara lounge didn’t allow business class person to bring a guest with Economy ticket so didn’t get to use it.

Air Canada checkin for Del Yvr

I would be flying to Del from Amd on AI, reaching midnight. Del to Yvr departure is 5.45 am. How soon can I check in, so that I can use the business class lounge? If I can't go in early, can I use premium plaza arrival longe? Have priority pass.

You can check in with AC (?) as soon as their counter opens, which is about 4 hours before departure. If AI in AMD already issued you a boarding pass you can go directly to the international concourse. Note AI 14 (like all AI flights from AMD to DEL) are the hybrid international / domestic flights, so you will get a boarding pass with a big D on it, hold onto it as you will need it in Delhi to exit the international concourse and then reenter to the checkin area. You could ask the AMD checkin to give you a DT for Delhi, in such cases you leave the country in AMD and in DEL just go thru transfer security.

DOM - INTL transfer UK986 Vistara

Wondering if Vistara UK986 (BOM - DEL) is treated as international connector for an onward international flight from DEL or is it domestic connection. Had below questions/confirmation.

1) Assuming UK986 is domestic, assume exit immigration will be at DEL rather than BOM (reaching 00:55 in DEL with international flight at 03:50, so hope ~3hrs is ample time)?

2) Assume Vistara does bags checkin till final destination (one ticket) - international flight is with United and as such it’s listed as it’s partner airline.

3) will boarding pass for united issued at BOM or transfer desk at DEL needs to be used OR being domestic-INTL one needs to get it from ticket counter (if not issued at origin)

4) lastly do we need to exit out in arrivals at Delhi and take left to go one level up to airline checkin area (glass holding area) for exit-immigration OR there is a separate path for international transfer/connection (however for DOM-INTL) within terminal to reach exit-Immigration and subsequently security.

I found few maps (Below links) for ticket counter area and immigration from main terminal however couldn’t find DOM-INTL transit related visual maps.

https://www.ana.co.jp/en/kh/internat...t/map/del.html
https://www.jal.co.jp/en/inter/airport/del/info/
(Intl-Intl transfer - not sure if DOM-INTL passengers get to see international transfer signboards at all)

interestingly these links are from sites other than Delhi airport website which lacks such basic information (visual detailed maps) that is usually provided in airline magazines, above JP airlines (so security reason might not be a good rationale since some of it is available on internet, so why not provide it at the source).

Vistara is pure domestic. UK will check your bags to the final destination, if its all on one ticket you may also get your United boarding passes (IMHO unlikely). In DEL you can go to the international section of T3 for transit security and immigration if you have the boarding pass already. Make sure you report to the UNited gate early to get your bags registered. If you don't get the boarding pass, you leave the domestic section via the baggagclaim, go upstairs to the international checkin and get BPs from United, then go thru immigration and security.

T3 Intl->Intl in 3 hours?

How is international to international in the same terminal (T3)

Considering arriving on BA and having a separate ticket on TG with three hours in between.

Is it as easy as reclearing security/getting a boarding pass at transit or more complicated? Thanks!

3 hours is more than enough time on separate tickets if you don't have checked-in luggage....if you do then 3 hours is just about enough....
