I personally don't think the Aman is a great location for sightseeing in the northern parts of Delhi (Chandni Chowk, Red Fort, etc), its a bit of a hike up there, though its fine for south Delhi shopping. Given you've only got a couple of days for sightseeing I'd be inclined to stay further north & reduce your car travel time. I'm also not certain the extra cost for the Aman is justified.

Have you considered the Taj Mahal? Its an excellent location for a first time visit, if you email the hotel they can put together a sightseeing schedule for you in advance as well as airport transfers (all the hotels in this class should be able to, but I've had particularly good experiences with Taj) & the food at their restaurants is great, particularly at Varq.

I haven't stayed there (its fairly new), but friends recently stayed at the Lalit & really liked it, IMO its worth a look because of the great location off CP.

The Lalit in Delhi isn't new, it's just the property that was the IC Grand Connaught Place which has since been re-flagged/re-named based on its owner (trying to go his own way in India) using his own first name.

The Taj Mahal (on Man Singh Road) is a property I use quite often and it is indeed decent too.

its true....the lalit is not a new hotel....they have moved away from priority club & have started their own chain....they currently have about 7 properties (i think) & have plans for a big expansion....

i really like the taj man singh property....its got one of my favourite restaurants (wasabi) in the city & i'm there a few times every month....

Lalit is hardly new! I'm a hoarder of PS points, and the "Lalit" was the only ICH property I could put up with in Delhi. Now it's gone from the chain I am freed to stay at the Oberoi!

The top hotels in Delhi are outrageously expensive, and entry-level rooms are seldom the ones you see on promotional material....

spg really needs a smaller property here in delhi, like a 4 points or aloft....hilton has done well by opening up a hgi....

Hotel near NDLS?

These all sound like great hotels.

I am hoping to take the train back to Delhi from Chandigarh next week and am looking for a hotel within easy walking distance (dragging my rollaboard at night having never been to CP) from the rail station. I want to stay 1 night, do lots of walking (perhaps guided?) on Thursday and then fly out at 3am Friday, so being able to pay for half a day extra would be nice.

Many of the hotels listed above are pretty fancy, and that may be best for this thread. Although I love luxury, I won't have time to enjoy it - except maybe the gym :). I would like it to come in less than INR10k if possible.

Thanks

at some point Groombridge will be posting a report in lux hotels raving about the aman and its local excursions. (trip last month)

a bunch of posters there have said the imperial has gone downhill, and one poster has said the oberoi has gone downhill as well.

Maurya

Stay in the Maurya and get a Towers room. I guarantee you'll be happy with it.

In central delhi the Metropolitan the Lalit, the Taj Palace and the Claridges tend to be competitively priced

In South delhi the Grand near the airport is also Ok priced

In my view for quality at the top end nothing beats the Taj Mansingh
