TRANSFER at BOM

Air India, Jet Airways and Vistara operate all of their international and domestic flights out of the same NEW terminal (T2). There is no need to change terminal or take any bus/taxi.

Low-cost airlines operate out of legacy Santacruz domestic terminal and you need to continue to follow the usual practice of changing terminal.

INTL-to-INTL connections:

NOTE: Air-India operates some domestic flight segments as extension of an oversees flight (Typically flight numbers <400 - Double check routing on AI website to confirm example: AI 144 EWR_BOM_DEL). They should be treated as INTL flights for immigration/rechek/customs purpose.

If both legs are on the same airline or on airlines that have interlined agreement, then your bags will be tagged to your final destination. But verify this fact when you actually check your bags at your origination and reconfirm by inspecting the bag tags.

Otherwise you have to go through immigration, collect bags and check-in again. This may need appropriate Visa too. If you have to do this, provide for 3 to 4 hours layover to be safe.

INTL-to-DOM transfer

Practice is similar to what you may find at major airports in the world such as JFK, LHR, etc. You have to go through immigration, collect bags, go through customs and then TURN LEFT upon exit from customs towards transfer area. DO NOT GO STRAIGHT into Semi-controlled reception area.

It is best to have entire reservation on single PNR to avail of better baggage allowance. Otherwise expect to pay high tarrifs of excess baggage. Also in case of delayed incoming flight, you will be most likely accomodated on the domestic portion.

Note that certain dometic looking segments of AI are actually onward leg of continuing International flight such as EWR-BOM-AMD flight. When connecting to/from these flights, treat them as INTL segments.

DOM-to-INTL transfer

It is best to have entire reservation on single PNR to avail of better baggage allowance. Otherwise expect to pay high tarrifs of excess baggage. Your bags will be most likely tagged to your final destination when it is same airline or when airlines have interline agreement. Again, best to double check and reconfirm by looking at the bag tags. Otherwise, you have to collect bags at BOM and check-in again. Please check with your airline for the current process. Posts on this thread that are more than couple of months old, should be in "Trust but Verify" category.

If your incoming flight to BOM has been classified as international flight then you would have already completed emmigration (exit from India) process at your origination and you will simply follow INTL-to-INTL connection at BOM.

Otherwise, you will go through emmigration process at BOM airport even when your bags are checked to your final destination directly.

Of course, completely forgot about that! Duh!

Yes, you can stay outside the country with that flight.

Mumbai International transfer _ Alochol buying suggestions

I am traveling from DENver to Frankfurt to Mumbai to Hyderabad. My domestic flight is Air India in Terminal T2. So as per the Forum i have to collect my baggage at Mumbai & transfer to Customs & then recheck them for Domestic transit. Please correct me If i am wrong.

Also I would like buy wines ( 2Ltrs) , can i buy in US duty free & carry over to Mumbai as Cabin Baggage or it is better to buy in Mumbai & pack them in checked-in bags , before domestic transit.

ideally you should be fine but it all depends on how much the items are worth & whether you are under the customs allowance....bags are usually scanned when leaving baggage claim so if they feel your bags need to be checked then they will do so....

Hi,
looking at options to Bangalore from London, BA direct flight is out as it is now too expensive for company expense policy.
there is a jet Airways option via Mumbai that would get me to Bangalore the same time as my colleague on the BA flight, on arrival at Mumbai will I need to go through immigration, collect luggage and check in again?
its a 3.5 hour transit so should have plenty time.
its all in the early hours of the morning and in economy so no lounge options, will anything be open?
Itís this or Etihad via Abu Dhabi, opinions welcome!

9W option: Immigration/Customs in MUmbai. Otherwise an easy transfer. No change of terminal. If your fligh tis on time, you have plenty time.
EY option: If layover in EY is neither too short nor too long then it is preferable as you dont have to do intl-to-domestic transfer.

Self-connect Domestic to Int'l

Hi All - my mother is currently booked on AI 618 from HYD to BOM arriving 1820, and a separate ticket on Air Canada from BOM-YYZ departing 2330. She had 5hrs between the flights, and would just need to do a transfer in the same terminal.

However, AI cancelled that flight and moved her to AI051 departing at 2200, so she won't be able to make her connection (especially as she is on separate bookings, so there was no protection). Does AI typically allow refunds in this case?

She is now considering getting an Indigo flight arriving 1835 in T1 - does a shuttle still exist between T1 and T2? Is 4h55 enough to go through baggage claim, transfer, check-in, immigration, security, etc.?

Thanks and please let me know if there is a better forum to post regarding the AI question?

You should be able to ask for a refund from Air India for the ticket.
AFaik the terminal shuttle has been discontinued.

That's unfortunate, I take AI618 quite often and it has mostly been on time (more or less). If there's no earlier flight then the Indigo one is the best option (there's a SpiceJet one around the same time), it's a bit of a dead zone of the day flight wise which sucks as I like to arrive around 7pm then meet friends for dinner before a 1am flight to somewhere

It should be enough time, I think the peak arrivals are between midnight and 2-3am, so by 4:20am it should be quieter at immigration. Last I knew they discontinued the shuttle bus so you'd need a cab or auto, they can be a little extortionate, an auto should run you Rs150 but it'll take a bit of bargaining to get to that (and that is still arguably way too much)

9.5 hour transit... lodging recommendation

Arriving at 12:40am on Cathay. Leaving for Pune at 10:10 on Jet Airways. Any recommendations on whether the Courtyard or Niranta hotel would be a better choice? Price is about the same. I am a Marriott Platinum (if it makes a difference).

Or if immigration and bags take a while, is it better to just get sleep in a chair in a lounge?

Any and all recommendations appreciated.

At most immigration will take an hour, though generally <20 minutes. So even in the worst case scenario I suggest staying landside. Can't comment on those hotels, never stayed at either
