Transit in india without visa possible?

I am planning to transit in Chennai/Madras (MAA), India. I am inbound on TG337 and outbound on LH 759. Connecting time is nearly 3 hrs. I will probably not be able to check through my luggage thus retrieving it in MAA and checking in again there.
Does anyone know if am eligible for transit without visa (twov) or do i need transit visa? I am not planning to leave the airport.
Thx for any help
Thomas

You do not say which passport you hold (German?), and I would really try to check my bags thru (why do you think you can not?).

You can get your info here:

Thanks for your help u2fan.

You are right, i do hold a German passport. I will ask if a check-thru is possible with THAI. I guess this will make things easier.
Nevertheless I assume that either way i will be able to transit without a visa being escorted by some government official.
Does MAA feature transit facilities?

technically it is allowed - but in practice their might be some issues as most airports do not have proper transit facilities in place. If required, an airport official (immigration?) would accompany you from the arrivals to the departure area. As TG and LH interline your bags should be OK. I would also have TG put a note in your record that you are a transfer pax in MAA and do not require a visa to avoid confusion at BKK.

I don't know about MAA, but transit without visa is definitely possible at DEL and BOM, in theory and practice. TG will be able to check your bags through to LH.

I did a turnaround on TG at MAA. You can read about my experience here:

It should be possible, being another passenger on my flight did it.

At BOM, my experience was different. I definitely did need a visa despite what others may have experienced. Perhaps things have changed recently, but as of very recently there was no way to do an international transit at BOM. DEL is fine though. You can read about my experiences at those two airports in the thread in the link I gave in the first paragraph.
