And I live in MAA, I've eaten at the saravana bhavans, komala vilas (that's the same chain that runs the komalas restaurant in SFO), various other popular independent local restaurants etc. If you want chain restaurant south indian vegetarian food in MAA, there's this outfit called Sangeetha with four or five branches (Adyar, Anna Nagar, Mylapore etc) that's streets ahead in terms of quality, taste etc.

Now this is the kind of post I'm looking for and which makes FT so worth it.

Thanks to this post (which I will reference in the future) I have assembled some chain stuff and foreign places to try the next time I am in town, in addition to suggestions from relatives.

I think I've been to Sangeetha, and wasn't too impressed, though I grew up with Saravana as a kid on my trips over (back when it was only in MAA). I last had Komala's 10 years ago and though it was take-out, I liked it more than Saravana, but it didn't have the nostalgia...

So - if you're ever in town that'll take care of the long postponed MAA FT do (3 regular FTers in residence here - hserus, aniruddh_77 and oontiveros, and something or the other always comes up whenever we try to schedule a meetup.. must be a jinx. yes that's it) :)

Probably wind up eating at one of the several great non south indian restaurants around (In Seoul for korean, Akasaka for japanese, Azulia at the GRT for mediterranean, Cornucopia for continental, Kokum for west coast seafood etc)

And depends on which sangeetha. The one in Adyar is excellent, I'd rate it streets above Saravana Bhavan any day .. though as I said, I dont particularly like chain store south indian, or even eat south indian food when I'm eating out (I get enough of that at home)
