AI 101 and 191 are both operated by B77Ws where do you see B788s?

Possible but unlikely. These technical stop routes are very expensive and complicated. Even if the 77Ws on that route had to go in for maintenance or something similar.... hard to see any reason to do it this way.

Anyways the first 788 flight is scheduled for 8 Jan... so you can track that through Flightaware etc. to see what plane they actually fly on that day.

Also, there’s little to gain for you if its a 788 vs. a 77W. AI has some fairly old 788s in their fleet as well. Apart from the 2-2-2 there’s not much benefit for you - of course given this is a 77W route - that equipment swap could happen any time after you book your 788 flight as well.

Could Air Canada be an option? They have YYZ-DEL flights with reverse herringbone J seats. B77W or B789 usually.

Very very impressive and brave and kind of crazy of them to fly 788s on this route.

AI states that their passenger + baggage range for the 788 is 6600 nm and flight aware says this flight took 6522 nm! You better hope the engines are working better than 1000% if you're taking this flight.

Nope, the B788 range is 7355nm as per Boeing: Boeing: 787 By Design

I don't think that accounts for baggage, cargo and pax, plus has less seats than AI's fit out (242 vs 18+238).

While I'm sure (I hope) that things weren't as close as I stated above, the data comes from AI - Boeing 787 Dreamliner - Air India.

The MTOW is 228t in both sources, so I suppose the range is OK. When UA did B787 direct service SFO to Australia (6400nm) they kept 70 seats empty to stay below MTOW with the extra fuel onboard. I suppose AI does the same.

MTOW may be the same but I don't know if Boeing's website states its range based on MTOW like AI does. That maybe why there's such a big difference in range.

But you're right they're probably doing some major things to cut down on weight. I don't know how much it's costing AI if they keep so many seats empty, no matter how efficient the 788 is! UA of course carries less luggage than AI too!

Avoid Air India at all costs IMO. An absolutely awful airline.

AirIndia may not be shiny. and UA is not thatgreat either.
But uninterrupted sleep is where the value of J travel comme through for me with direct flights compared to untimely halt in Europe or ME.

BTW, surprised that no one has mentioned 747 flown by LH. (although sleep interruption is an issue)

Actual quality of flight will be similar between UA and AI. UA is far superior is handing IRROPS.

Have you seen how dirty AI planes are and how poor their business class cabin is? It's terrible IMO. It's not even worthy of being an airline.
