Pressurization error on 9W flight Mumbai to Jaipur.

I am not a pilot so I do not know what exactly the crew forgot to do, but this just reinforces my opinion of lax standards of India's flight crews. Remember the case where another Jet Airways pilot and co-pilot got into a fight, leading the pilot to abandon the cockpit of an international flight (LON-BOM) for a long time? Or what about the time when the crew of another Jet Airways flight had fallen off to sleep and woke up only when the (Turkish) control tower scrambled some Air Force jets to see what was going on?

I'm surprised that pressurization depends on a manual action required from the pilots. Their checklist is long enough as it is. One would guess that it would be automatic. Possibly there was equipment failure, i.e. the pilots are being unfairly blamed?

I'm confident that an investigation will follow, and that the investigation will identify the problem. Be patient - we'll find out soon enough.
The other report mentioned how passengers were grumbling about not being told by the crew why the O2 masks were deployed. Fair enough, but every flight I've been on there's a briefing and demonstration of that exact subject - every time. |

I liked the demands the passengers are now making... 100 J tickets & 30L compensation. I wonder if that’s per person or for only the injured parties or only the injured per person or the entire flight in which case a few people won’t get J tickets. I do think they should pay some serious compensation to all the passengers and a little more to the injured. It’s when people start demanding 100 J tickets that you can’t take them seriously. The flight staff did handle the situation very poorly. Initial reports do point to pilot error. Now is the cockpit pressurized separately? Didn’t the pilots feel the same pains? |
The best explanation I have read in this matter is this:
" Pilot forgot to turn on bleed* switch. Switching OFF bleed for takeoff is extremely common for B737 as it allows more thrust. However, after rotation, it must be switched on between 500-1000 ft. " * Bleed Air: Air enters the turbine following which its temperature increases. This is then mixed with fuel to ignite the engine. A small bit of the hot air is diverted to maintain cabin pressure at high altitude. This is called bleed air. |
