UK is hesitant to expand but AI seems to be looking at expanding/renewing its fleet. One would think 44 widebodies (17/27 split B777 & B787) and 72 A32S is enough to first stabilize the operations... especially since the domestic market is a bloodbath it shouldn't venture into... let the LCCs slaughter themselves there. Especially since A350s will be super expensive right now?

These news reports are meaningless - AI has to secure debt funding (since I dont see the Tatas infuse equity for this purchase). Debt funding will not take place unless the Tatas guarantee repayment or a credit appraisal is complete and the new lenders get an exclusive right over the planes from the new order - for that the existing lenders will have to agree. That kind of negotiation looks very long in the making. In any case orders do not mean much in the aviation industry - its just a placeholder till clarity emerges which could be years.

Their long haul 777s are ready for the junk heap, and something should be done now, not just in the long term. Even renting some from Cathay, and Qatar is doing, would be a step in the right direction..

Only the interior (which is rooted in the assinine probably bribed decision to install seats from the italian manfacturer Avio) is in bad shape. The airframe itself is fine. Flying ULH India-US with B77W is killer effecient. The B77L are a different story: if they are not completely full the margins are super bad with the current fuel prices. I don't have any insight on the economics of the B788 that flies 14-15h from IAD to India, I'm assuming they fly that route with a reduced payload....

Sounds positive. But not clear what this entails, how long it will take, or whether they will do all of the planes.

Business class seat design has evolved considerably, and this layout is good for 1980 but not 2022. Simply refurbishing these seats is not enough, they need to invest in a modern design. Which they might be doing, but there is no info. The previous management put these awful seats in the 787 as well.

ET found a chatty AI insider at the IATA meeting in Doha... https://economictimes.indiatimes.com...w/92362420.cms

Nothing really new, other than the new that the DCS will also be migrated to Altea in July.

Looks like AI have temporarily removed the online redemption option for their Flying Returns Program.
And now to redeem, one has to make the trek to the local AI office to make any redemption's.

They are certainly taking their time with redemptions. It was supposed to be working within 5 days of the migration!

Actually before they started offering online redemption's, i recollect going across to their city booking office, which had a separate Flying Returns Desk. Was not too much of a hassle. Of course all this was a good 12 - 13 years back. They subsequently shut the city office down and re-located it nearer to the airport along with some other offices of theirs.

India is removing the air ticket price controls it put in place in 2020. So after August 31st, it will be open season for the airlines setting prices without being stuck with maximum and minimum price levels and having 40% of tickets sold at or below the median price. This will make all the airlines in India happy. The Tatas/Air India are celebrating.

And consumers will get to see what a more free market looks like with ticket prices.

It's more likely we will see an airlines cartel involved in price fixing and gouging. Recently and on multiple occasions I have seen that on the date of the flight - all airlines on that route have the exact same fare. To the penny.

Terms like free market, inflation and so on are lovely illusions that companies like to toss up to let everyone know how they are screwing their customers over.
superboi likes this.
