Jet Delta Air France-KLM Possible Buyers for Air India.

A "strong buzz" is all that it is at the moment, but when my mother came across this in the newspaper this morning and read it out loud, it took me by surprise. Several Indian publications are reporting this potential bid for Air India and its Rs. 55,000 crore debt.

I wouldn't be happy at all to see this happen. I'm hoping AI goes to a third party - otherwise we'd end up with a monopoly for full service airlines in India and that can't be good for consumers. Esp. since Vistara being a shuttle service for Delhi based people only.

It would be interesting to see how much of AI's debt the govt. is willing to take on and how much they (are able to) allow the buyer to let go staff... both would be crucial for the new entities success.

I don't seen this happening on account of the huge price tag. Not sure how it will play politically either if the national carrier is sold to a foreign consortium. And if perchance there is prospect of mass reorganization, then I imagine people will be out in the streets.

Delta Air Lines has no plans to invest in Air India but continues to express strong interest in shaping Boeing’s new mid-market aircraft (NMA), the airline’s chief executive said March 13. “We traditionally don’t comment upon [merger-and-acquisition] speculation. But I’ll tell you, we’re not planning on investing in Air India,” Delta CEO Ed Bastian told attendees at a JP Morgan investor conference.

Etihad is currently looking for an elegant way to get out of their Jet Airways investment... 9W is highly unlikely to touch the AI mess...

I think it would take huge concessions on the part of the govt. before any company would want to touch that mess. Given the amount of debt, unions, old planes and poor technology infrastructure I can't imagine any other company realistically wanting to buy AI (almost) whole. I think it will be carved into very thin slices and sold unless the govt. acts very very boldly.

Delta CEO had to make that statement to prevent Delta stock from crashing. because of the speculation.
