I have seen more available flights on the AI nonstop than the UA. YMMV.

For the one stop, not sure if you have checked Etihad yet, because there seems to be some issues getting any premium flight awards to ticket on EY with AA miles.

Yeah, I hear you.

Wish you the best.

FYI, Here's a link to a rather lengthy on-going discussion (towards the later pages) on the EY award with AAdvantage issue.

Every NRI and their dog try to be in India with their points around that time, so its highly unlikely you will be able to get any points tickets for direct US-India flights. If you have a ton of Amex MR the secret tip is to check availability via Singapore KF and ask them if they can see awards on *A carriers. LH group carriers for example are more generous with their award inventory to non US FFPs like KF.

Sorry don't fly that often. Can you specify the long abbreviations - are you saying use singapore miles to book on Lufthansa?

Is thanksgiving time better?

AI non-stops from JFK used to be easy but are no longer available so forget about that option. I have seen them from SFO and ORD but that's not worth the detour.

AC from YYZ is worth checking.

FFP frequent flyer program
KF Krisflyer, Singapore airlines FFP
LH Lufthansa

Turkey day is the same. 3.2 Million Indians live in the US, 1.2 in Canada. I'm pretty certain atleast 10% of those look to fly home to visit during the longer holidays.

Again - You are not going to get the direct flights. I travel many times a year for over a decade on miles and have seen it all dry up.

Found this post from a few months ago https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/28329659-post247.html

Reminded me of this: "Booking this award wasn’t as simple as transferring points and selecting Air India on United’s site though. For whatever reason, I wasn’t able to see availability on this flight on United or Aeroplan’s websites, but a United supervisor was able to confirm space after working at it for 30 minutes or so."

from the following TPG review:
