Which aircraft on AI101 (BOM/DEL-)LHR-JFK in 1995?
My first transatlantic flight was in August 1995, from LHR-JFK on Air India 101 (as a stopover from its origin at BOM/DEL). If I remember correctly, it was a 747, but which variant would it have been? It looks like Air India had their 747-437s delivered starting in 1993 - had this route gone over to this airline by then? How long did Air India persist with a stopover on AI101 at LHR?
While searching, I found this great trip report from 2002. 747-437s were certainly used then and the BOM/DEL-JFK route still had a stop in LHR. But I don't know if there were any changes between 1995-2002:
BOM-LHR-JFK on Air India (Jumpseat & J Class) + W Times Square ...
Thanks in advance for any ideas!
I'm not sure where's the appropriate forum for this - mods feel free to move as required.
Thanks,
John

The service was a daily 747-400 in 1995. The daily service ran 2-3x weekly as AI 101 routing BOM-LHR-JFK and 4-5x weekly as AI 111 routing BOM-DEL-LHR-JFK.

AI only started nonstop service with the arrival of the 772LR and 773ER. AI 101/102 always was with a stop in LHR to JFK. Some historical timetables are here: http://www.timetableimages.com/ttimages/ai.htm

AI BOM-JFK was definitely via LHR in 1997 and in 1999. I have fond memories of my first and second experience in the 747-400 bubble.
Those days, AI ran a lot of B1G1 free in J for corporate customers. I enjoyed a fair bit of travel with dad during my vacations.

VT-ALA, the first 77L, was delivered July 2007. Direct flights started in 2008 (?): http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/india...s-finally.html

I remember an AI flight in 1996 on the 747 between LHR and DEL. F was in the nose, with economy immediately behind, and J on the upper deck.
F had three pax. Me and my mom on side of the aisle and a well-known tennis player on the other. He was super surly throughout with the crew and rolling his eyes at everyone in general! Pretty much lost all respect for him after that.

Wow! My first guess would have been Mahesh Bhupati.
I wasn't a big fan of Leander Paes' till I met him two years ago. He came off as enlightened and charming. I think he has had something of an epiphany later in his life.
