Need help after a segment Cancellation

Had family originally booked AMD-BKK-NRT-ORD via Thai / ANA using UA miles

Thai has since cancelled the AMD-BKK route.

UA says no Jet Availability to go from AMD - DEL/BOM on 1/21 - 1/25.

What are my best options? Which domestic carriers will allow 2 bags 23KG each when connecting to another carrier's Int'l Ticket to the USA?

Jet says only domestic allowances apply if not on same itinerary.

Need to get them from AMD to either DEL or BOM. Flights from DEL/BOM to Chicago are on Lufthansa / Asiana with 2 Bags 23KG allowed.

Thanks!

What does UA propose you do? They sold you (for miles) the ticket from AMD-ORD. They should provide a way for you to get from AMD to ORD. (You may want to ask for help on the UA board if you don't like their answer.)

My experience is that 9W will let you have 2 free bags if you show them an international ticket you are connecting to, even if not the same PNR. But, this was a few years ago, and it's not the policy, so you should come prepared to pay for your bags.

Jet No more provides the international allowance if you are on separate ticket.

Spice jet has made a recent policy change providing international allowance, if the international segment is on a route not serviced by Spice.

i would get in touch with ua as well since they seem to have issued the original ticket....

not anymore....9w will charge you for the extra bag if not booked on the same pnr....

UA told me to buy a one way ticket between AMD and either BOM/DEL.

There is a SQ flight AMD-SIN but shows no Y availability.

My guess is they would offer him a refund of the miles + fees if they can't find award availability but that is not what the OP is looking for since he needs to travel. Not a great situation to be in.

OP, if you can't find flight tickets that work, there are plenty of train options. It's about a 7 hour train ride for BOM-AMD.

Exactly. They did offer a refund. But a one-way flight is $46 which is not a big deal. The bigger issue is the baggage issue

Yes, depending on how much luggage you have, it could cost a lot in fees. There are no carriers that allow 2x23kg for domestic travel anymore, even for connecting journeys. Let me summarize the baggage allowances available to you (for economy tickets, with no status):

  • Jet allows 15 kg
  • IndiGo allows 15 kg
  • AI allows 15 kg + 10 kg if you signup for their loyalty program
  • SpiceJet allows 15 kg, but will match the baggage allowance of a connecting international carrier (up to a maximum of 30 kg)

Excess baggage is charged at INR 250/kg for each carrier. So, if you have 45 kgs of baggage, that's an extra INR 7500 (~$120) per person on 9W and 6E, INR 5000 on AI (~$80) and INR 3750 on SG (~$60).

Also, if you can fly from BOM, I wouldn't rule out the train option. Good luck ^

EDIT: I forgot that GoAir flies this route. They do still have a policy that allows 46 kg baggage allowance for international connections, but I've never used it myself nor have I seen any reports from someone who used it. You're welcome to try, though :D I'm skeptical if this still works, since all of the larger carriers have done away with the policy.
