PLEASE NOTE that CERTAIN DOMESTIC FLIGHTS OF Air India (#010-399 and 900-999) are ACTUALLY segments of INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT and hence for the following discussion should be considered INTL flights.

TRANSFER at BOM

Air India and Vistara operate all of their international and domestic flights out of the same NEW terminal (T2). There is no need to change terminal or take any bus/taxi.

Low-cost airlines operate out of legacy Santacruz domestic terminal (T1) and you need to continue to follow the usual practice of changing terminal.
(For those not familiar with Santacruz Airport - CSIA - while both T1 and T2 uses same airfield and runaways, they are quite apart landside and can be 25-45 min by taxi depending on the traffic)

If first time in BOM then it is advisable to book connection with AI or Vistara to avoid this transfer between terminals.

INTL-to-INTL connections (suspended as of Jan 2022 due to COVID):

If both legs are on the same airline or on airlines that have interlined agreement, then your bags will be tagged to your final destination. But verify this fact when you actually check your bags at your origination and reconfirm by inspecting the bag tags.

Otherwise you have to go through immigration, collect bags and check-in again. This may need appropriate Visa too. If you have to do this, provide for 3 to 4 hours layover to be safe.

INTL-to-DOM transfer

Practice is similar to what you may find at major airports in the world such as JFK, LHR, etc. You have to go through immigration, collect bags, go through customs and then TURN LEFT upon exit from customs towards transfer area. DO NOT GO STRAIGHT into Semi-controlled reception area.

It is best to have entire reservation on single PNR to avail of better baggage allowance. Otherwise expect to pay high tarrifs of excess baggage. Also in case of delayed incoming flight, you will be most likely accomodated on the domestic portion.

Note that certain domestic looking segments of AI are actually onward leg of continuing International flight (#010-399 and 900-999). When connecting to/from these flights, treat them as INTL segments.

DOM-to-INTL transfer

It is best to have entire reservation on single PNR to avail of better baggage allowance. Otherwise expect to pay high tariffs of excess baggage. Your bags will be most likely tagged to your final destination when it is same airline or when airlines have interline agreement. Again, best to double check and reconfirm by looking at the bag tags. Otherwise, you have to collect bags at BOM and check-in again. Please check with your airline for the current process. Posts on this thread that are more than couple of months old, should be in "Trust but Verify" category.

If you are travelling by Air India and your incoming flight to BOM has been classified as international flight (currently applicable to certain AI flights only) then you would have already completed immigration process at your origin and you will simply follow INTL-to-INTL connection at BOM.

Otherwise, you will go through immigration at BOM airport even when your bags are checked to your final destination directly.

TRANSFER at BOM

Air India, Jet Airways and Vistara operate all of their international and domestic flights out of the same NEW terminal (T2). There is no need to change terminal or take any bus/taxi.

Low-cost airlines operate out of legacy Santacruz domestic terminal and you need to continue to follow the usual practice of changing terminal.

INTL-to-INTL connections:

NOTE: Air-India operates some domestic flight segments as extension of an oversees flight (Typically flight numbers <400 - Double check routing on AI website to confirm example: AI 144 EWR_BOM_DEL). They should be treated as INTL flights for immigration/rechek/customs purpose.

If both legs are on the same airline or on airlines that have interlined agreement, then your bags will be tagged to your final destination. But verify this fact when you actually check your bags at your origination and reconfirm by inspecting the bag tags.

My asst. thought it would mean less waiting time for me at the airport - the reason she booked it - 2hrs is plenty in lots of airports

A last question - since the whole journey is booked on the same ticket (same PNR), will 9W be responsible on re-booking my domestic journey if I can't make the connection (like other airlines). After all, the whole thing was done through their website and with the same PNR.

Thanks for your help!

LHR (21:25) - BOM (11:00)
BOM (12:55) - HYD (14:15)

This has been booked through 9W. Since I've never been to BOM and transferred there, you guys think the 1:55hrs is enough for the intl - domestic transfer?
I agree that Keyser that this connection may be touch to make. But it is definitely doable. I did the exact same connection about a year ago with plenty of time to spare.

When you checkin in London, your bags will have tags that list both flights. But you will have to pick up your luggage in the international terminal in BOM and re-check it in the domestic terminal. However, Jet often has a counter open in the international terminal itself in which you can check in your bags for the onward domestic trip.

the problem with bom is that the international & domestic terminals are actually 2 different airport about 20-30 minutes apart....if your incoming flight is on time & you get through immigration quick & your bags come out quickly then you will make it....otherwise it will be tough....

9w will be responsible for re-booking if you miss the second leg of your journey....

I just got off the phone with 9W UK support about what might happen if I get delayed etc between the xfers - she kept trying to say that I get caught up in customs, luggage etc. - it will be my problem, I will have to pay for the new flight!

I hope that it's the lady on the phone who is wrong and it's not 9W policy!

Just in case anyone is interested, I made the trip safely enough with plenty of time to spare. My LHR-BOM touched down at about 11am and I was in the domestic terminal by 12 noon - about an hour in total! ^

To consider my specific case:
- My incoming flight was on/ slightly before schedule, docked at a gate so no bussing or anything
- Immigration took me about 5 - 10 mins, lot's of open counters not that many people
- My luggage came out in another 5-10 mins after clearing immigration
- Customs, re-scanning and checking in with the 9W transfer desk another 10mins
- The wait for the transfer coach to leave another 10mins
- Actual coach travel about 25mins

So yeah, in total about 60mins with everything running like clockwork. So I made it there with an hour (~35min to actual boarding) to spare. The main factor behind all this was prolly due to the fact that my incoming to BOM was at 11am which is most likely a non peak hour (can anyone confirm?) time for intl flights. However, I can easily envision the whole thing going wrong in a cascade manner if things start to slip. Thankfully in my case it was OK.
Still, I would avoid BOM transfers if I can in the future to avoid some of the hassle and uncertainty involved. HYD airport was such a treat – but again it’s much newer and a lot smaller.

Hi , I am travelling LHR-BOM-BLR with Jet Airways arriving in Mumbai at 11:00 am on 27th July (Saturday) and flying out from Domestic at 13:10. Jet has bag drop off service in International Airport (after customs) so I wouldn't have to carry or check in bag again at Domestic. My question will I struggle to catch the connection flight? and if so would be sensible for me to take a prepaid taxi/book a taxi to make the transfer as opposed to getting on the airport shuttle. I have never been to India before and when I booked my ticket I had no idea about the int-domestic issue in Mumbai airport.

Hmm, can't decide if it's handy or terrifying to see the popularity of this thread.

I may need to get from Ahmedabad to Mumbai and then on to LAX in September. My international-only experience there was pretty rough so I'm not looking forward to this.

If I can't get a reasonable price direct from Ahmedabad, I will take Jet Air to Mumbai domestic, then transfer to international.

I am happy to pre pay for a taxi and my local logistics company can help with that. I notice another poster mentioned he had the airline driver meet him at domestic and transfer him. I think that was with Emirates, which I will also be flying. I will be taking their business class, which comes with car service. I didn't get VIP service of any kind outside of the airport and was held to the three-hour window, although Emirates was quite gracious once inside.

Has anyone had definite experience with getting assistance INTO the airport? I have a five hour travel window between international and domestic and I'd like to spend as much of it in the Emirates lounge as possible.

you will be allowed inside about 4 hours before the flight....also, if all goes well then it will take you atleast an hour from the time you land at the domestic terminal to the time you make it to the international terminal so you should be able to spend maximum time at the lounge....

I figure that I will post in this old thread.

Have a domestic to international connection in Mumbai as follows:

Jet Airways 9W442 BLR/BOM arrive 10:10 PM
Korean Air KE656 BOM/ICN depart 02:45 AM

Is this sufficient time for two older people (70+) with probably 2 checked bags each? Is there help available with baggage transfers at BOM?

Also, does anyone know if one can check baggage from BLR straight through i.e. will Jet airways transfer to Korean Air at BOM? If allowed by Jet, is this even recommended?

This will be just on one ticket issued with a Korean Air PNR.

Many Thanks.

I've done connections onto the KE flight arriving as late as midnight without any issues. 9W may be able to interline for you. Are both flights on the same reservation (PNR)? If so, then interline will be more straightforward. If not, then you will need to show the KE reservation details at the counter. The one time I interlined to KE at BOM it was a little odd -- they had my luggage at their check-in counter. So, when I came to check-in, they found it and re-tagged it. This was nice is that I was confident that my luggage was not going to be lost on the transfer.

Regardless if whether you are interlining luggage or not, you'll need to go to the domestic baggage claim area to board the transfer bus. This will take you to the normal outside drop-off at the international terminal where you'll go through security, check-in, customs, security just lite a passenger originating in Mumbai. If you prefer, you could arrange a private car. They may still be traffic at 11 PM -- the bus avoids the traffic by driving inside the airport.

On arrival at the international terminal, you'll find plenty of porters ready and often able to assist you with your luggage and through the crowds to your check-in counter. Agree on a price before they take your luggage.

All-in, this will be a bit of an annoying connection due to the dom->intl transfer. And, if you can't interline your luggage you'll have to carry it a little ways (from the baggage claim to the bus). But, you've left plenty of time. Honestly, my biggest concern would be getting through security at the domestic terminal at midnight and having to spend three hours is that heckhole.

Andymell-- many thanks for your detailed response.

I am getting the tickets booked through a travel agent so that everything will be on the same PNR. I am hoping that they can check their bags through to the final destination on KE. I was just a little bit worried if the interline baggage transfer at BOM would go ok between 9W and KE.

They have a further connection to the US at ICN on KE053 to HNL and then an inter island connection on Hawaiian Air at HNL. There will be a 7 hour layover at ICN; I am planning for them to rest at the transit hotel at ICN. Hopefully, it is only a short walk and easy to find.

This is their first ever trip to the US. Trying to make it as easy as possible for them. This was the shortest and least expensive routing I could find.

On a single PNR, 9W should be able to check the luggage through at least for the KE segments. Then, KE should definitely be able to check the luggage all the way through to either HNL or the final destination. (This is part of the reason it's nice that you actually see your luggage at the KE desk in BOM -- you can make sure they are actually doing it right.) As you probably know, they'll need to claim their luggage for US customs in HNL so it really doesn't matter whether the tag says HNL or the final destination.

BLR-BOM-ICN-HNL-OGG/KOA/LIH/ITO -- that's a heck of a trip! At least they'll be in a good place at the end of it. Actually, I'd worry more about the transfer in HNL -- they'll be exhausted from both the flights and (potential) long customs lines and you can end up walking a fairly long way there.

The length of this trip was why I am arranging for the transit hotel at ICN. The layover is 7 hours and maybe they can get about 4+ hours of rest/shut-eye/sleep in the hotel.

I have found HNL immigration/customs to be pretty friendly but the lines can be long. Depending on the concourse, there is usually a bus that drops you right at immigration hall. I will be meeting them at HNL after they have cleared customs. The one advantage of checking it all the way is that you can just drop off the luggage at the Hawaiian counter just after customs and then do not need to haul it to the inter-island terminal.

Thanks again.
