Why do check in agents lie?
 

I just flew Jet Konnect from BLR to DEL a couple of days ago. I tried to do the online seat selection and it wont let me. At online check in the system said my reservation was ok but they cant check me in. Since its only a 2 hour or so flight I figured I dont have to call them to worry about seat ... I can handle most seats I figured.

I go to check in and there is indeed a long line (I miss having status .... wish One world had some recognition here in India). Anyway, luckily the line moves quickly and at check in the agent tells me I am in row 27 and have an aisle. I ask if there are other options. She says there is a middle seat in the exit row up front BUT that wont recline. I then ask, does row 27 recline? She said yes this one has regular leg room but will recline but the exit row will not recline but has extra leg room.

I figured I would rather take the reclining seat and keep the row 27. I get on the plane and find this is the row in front of exit and it says on a sticker THIS SEAT WILL NOT RECLINE.

Made for a rather uncomfortable 2.5 hours. Not a huge deal BUT why would the agent lie?

Maybe. Though this has happened to me 3 times (twice with IT and now with Jet). You would hope that someone checking in would know what seats are what?

honest mistakes like this happen very often....i have lost count of the number of times i have been given wrong information by the check-in agent....

i would much rather they tell me they don't know the answer to a question or check with someone else, but just giving wrong information is happening too often....

They don't always lie, because they don't always know.

And Jet seem to have an increasing share of employees who are in serious need of a clue.

But thats not the Indian way! Look at directions, how many times have you asked for directions and been given wrong ones - just because the guy couldnt say that he didnt know. Its a funny mentality

with directions i get it all over the world....i have been given some wild directions in the past, didn't matter what country i was in....

Agree but its more prevalent in India not knowing but still giving directions. I just follow this anywhere in world, if the person asked is a bit hesitant, I tend to ignore his/her directions.

Regarding check in agents, in most places they really know the airplane layout.

it's a cultural thing for sure..it's like they get embarrassed if they say i don't know.
