My bet is - unless GoI does something radical (Hive off the MRO, Bring in New Professional Management, Tighten up the strings on spending, Get a sense of SERVICE to at least the customer facing employees & Pay the Bills for usage by GoI etc) Air India will have slow & painful death.

But given the state of affairs with Central Govt, I think it's a distant dream.

Dysfunctional corporate governance at its worst. If you want to appoint someone to manage your business, stop micromanaging how he does it AND then also holding him accountable for your errors of judgement forced upon him. Not to say that Jadhav has any real respect from career AI managers either. Definitely not a case of the captain going down with the Titanic. More like the Iceberg actually.

Not sure where you "heard" that from, but they have 9" PTVs in Y. If they have PTVs on their A332s, I would seriously doubt that they wouldn't install them on their newly-delivered 77Ws.

In other news, AI hasn't been paying employees for the last 3 months apparently although they've had the money to sponsor free air travel for "practically the entire film industry" during the recent IIFA Awards held in YYZ.

Air China's website, actually. I can't see any TVs in their images of Y class seating. Can you? If they've changed their mind since, then great. I haven't bothered following up.

Yet another variation on the story, although, as has already been pointed out on this and other threads, anonymous civil servants in India seem to be perfectly happy to share their views with the press, whether or not they have any validity is always open to questions.

MUMBAI, AUG. 5:
Even though the Civil Aviation Ministry is miffed with the suspension of Air India's membership application to Star Alliance, it is unlikely to stop other Indian airlines from joining the 27-member grouping.

“The Minister has gone on record stating that we have no problems with any another Indian airline joining the alliance. But we do not understand why Air India's application was rejected. If they are trying to arm-twist us by blocking Air India and bringing in another airline, it would not work,” a Ministry source told Business Line.

However, sources said, there hasn't been any application made by any other airline to join the alliance.

The Ministry officials' response came to a Business Line query on whether they would scuttle the entry of any other airline into the alliance, as was being indicated by a representative from Star Alliance

It's a graphic rendering after all, perhaps someone forgot to add the PTVs in Y?

If you refer to this pic - http://gongyi.sinaimg.cn/2011/0722/S...1325845669.jpg - on Air China's Sina page, http://client.sina.com.cn/zt/airchina/ , there are PTVs.

The NY Times carried an article this week about this. The bottom line......AI is not joining the Star Alliance anytime soon.

I think when they took it over from the Tatas, they paid them. So that was the equity they paid.

But regardless, once an owner has paid equity, if s/he still has to keep doing this regularly, it means the business is not viable.

A business is meant to generate profits, not cause the owner to keep pumping in money. Especially when the owner is the govt it is especially immoral, b/c Indian tax payer money is being used to fund a loss making entity. The govt should pull itself from such endeavors if it cannot run a successful operation that the private sector can.

So what is the UB group is funding IT, the owner is the same and he does not take anyone else's money to do it.

Star Alliance announced on 13 December 2007 that it had invited Air India to join as a member. After several delays, the final joining date was set at 31 July 2011.[2][3][4]. Star Alliance claimed that Air India had failed to meet the minimum standards for membership for that deadline and as a result Air India's invitation to join the Star Alliance has been suspended. [5]. On the other hand, officials at the Ministry of Civil Aviation of India, said the rejection came after the ministry didn’t agree to a demand from the alliance to give Jet Airways the go-ahead to join the grouping.[6] Air India has also denied that the airline had not met the conditions prescribed for joining Star Alliance.[7]. Interestingly, informed sources within Star Alliance said that concerns on Air India's entry were raised by United Airlines and Air Canada, both the airlines have a code-share agreement with Jet Airways

Interesting. So I guess 25 out of 27 voted for and 2 against.

Hmm, those 2 airlines could have convinced 23 others to vote against?

But I am inclined to think that those were the only 2 that voted against, since GoI would presumably have noticed something if 25 airlines were against...

I don't think GoI would officially know who all voted against.

Here is a hypothetical situation. If AI can get its act together and lets say by the end of the year apply to *A again and this time they agree to allow 9W also to join would *A consider inducting AI again?

Actually some news reports have said that 25 out of 27 *A airlines voted against AI, with no word as to whether the other two voted in favour or simply abstained.
