The email

Today is a sad day for Independence Air.

We are very sad to announce that Independence Air will be ceasing scheduled service operations effective this Thursday evening, January 5. You are receiving this email because you have purchased an itinerary that involves flights that will not operate as a result of our shutdown.

We are seeking bankruptcy court approval to automatically provide refunds to customers like you who are holding reservations for flights after the cessation of operations on January 5th. Assuming that such approval is received, we will automatically refund the amount paid for your itinerary to the credit card used to make the purchase. No refunds will be provided for free tickets or vouchers.

Our call volume is very high right now due to the number of outbound calls that we are making to assist affected customers, so it may be difficult for you to reach us by phone. However, answers to many of your questions can be found on our website (FLYi.com).

We also want to make you aware that, under section 145 of the Aviation and Transportation Security Act (November 19, 2001), Congress has obligated U.S. airlines to offer stand-by transportation to passengers holding unrefunded tickets for airlines that have ceased operations due to insolvency or bankruptcy. The Act stipulates that passengers must make their request to carriers serving the same routes as the bankrupt carrier and must do so within 60 days of the cessation of service. The U.S. Department of Transportation has ruled that airlines offering the stand-by transportation may charge $50 one-way per person to cover related expenses.

We are very sorry for any inconvenience this has caused. We will miss serving you.

Fully agreed. They are handling this better than anyone could have imagined. Their website is straightforward and somber about what is occuring. I could expect nothing less from them - they are/were a class act. Best wishes to all the FLYi folk.
