Interestingly, I contacted Air Europa to ask about lounge access. They replied saying eligible passengers are able to use the Sala Plaza Mayor at Madrid T4.

Fair enough SkyTeam rules are more restrictive, but If even Air Europa has managed to make some sort of provision, it makes Iberia look even worse.

True, but that's likely helped by the fact that UX has an existing arrangement with AENA Madrid lounges - just using the T4 rather than T1/2/3 ones right now.

It's a fair point, but Iberia has contracts with pretty much every AENA lounge in Spain outside of Madrid, so I'm sure they could have come to an agreement had they wanted to.

It seems ridiculous that MAD lounges are closed, meanwhile I was able to visit the contract lounge at ARN today flying IB.
