Basic Economy - AA Metal - AA Cardholder

One of the benefits of the AA red credit card is a free checked bag. Would this apply when booking through Iberia if the flight is AA metal? Booking through AA is three times the price so not a good option.

Thanks.

I was under the impression that operating airline rules always apply --> so yes your credit card would get you a checked bag.

However in another thread a mod said that US DOT rules say that the marketing carrier's rules apply to US flights, in which case you'd be buying BE from Iberia and getting no help from a AA card.

I think US DOT rules are irrelevant here because they do not apply to waivers for frequent flyers or credit card holders.

However, for OW Basic Economy, baggage allowance on AA flights is based on marketing carrier rules. See page 6 in the following document:

https://www.britishairways.com/asset...e-guide_en.pdf

In general, AA can be lax about this and there are plenty of examples in these forums of their using the larger allowance (including in the recent thread that you mention). Whether this is generousity or just IT issues is anybody's guess (for instance, you also get free seat selection if you are an IB+ elite and book an AA-operated flight in B, which should not happen according to the above document).

So, in principle nate625 is probably not entitled to a free checked bag, but has a non-negligible chance of being given one anyway.

The credit cards that offer a free checked bag on AA flights only do so for domestic U.S. flights.
