Dropping Last Segment of Avios Award Flight

Have an Avios award flight booked JFK-MAD-EAS in business. The connection in MAD is ~4 hours.

If we wanted to drop the last segment and make our way to EAS ourselves, what would the best practice be?

Call and attempt to make a change via phone and "officially" drop the connection? Or can we just short-check our bags, pick them up in MAD and walk out?

If you can officially drop the connection that would be best but you would have to reissue your tickets, etc. ... you might not be able to short-check your bags ... usually on Oneworld they will check your bags to your final destination ... difficult to short-check in my experience (mostly on AA/IB) as the agents have less and less leeway every day. On a paid ticket they can penalize you if you walk out, but on an Avios ticket probably not much they can do ... try to reissue.. if they start charging fees, etc. then go for it ... good luck!

The agents at JFK won't short-check to MAD. You simply don't have enough time in transit at MAD to convince the agent that you need access to your checked luggage there.

I would call and reissue the tickets, since you paid extra Avios for the MAD-EAS. Those would be worth more than the change fee. The only complication would be if there were married segment restrictions that caused you to book the EAS leg in the first place.
