  • Login problems: If you have trouble logging into the Iberia website, type in your number and password by hand instead of using autocomplete. For some people this fixes login issues.
  • Partner awards: Many flights on partners will not be available as one-way. You must redeem AA flights as a round trip for example
  • Cancellations: Iberia awards on AA cannot be cancelled.

I would be surprised if DOT would have any authority over domestic flights within spain. US court would likely have jurisdiction in a lawsuit, but I would be shocked if there are not terms of purchase on Iberia's site which requires Spain be the Forum for bringing suit.

They've intervened and stepped up in the past when I had tickets that didn't touch the US but were botched by a US-based OTA... Not saying anything will come of it, but it's one more avenue to explore.

It'll be interesting to see how it plays out - bet it makes a great case study for biz school in the future!
People are exaggerating massively here.

United Airlines beat the crap out of a passenger and is still going strong. That got 100000% more media attention than a few travel hackers getting refunds.

All Iberia are doing is saying to people who have never flown with them before, bought tickets with no intention of flying them, and who probably weren't even going to use their bonus Avios on an Iberia flight... that they are getting their money back.

I think cautiously the response from IB with ambiguous word "inconsistencies" is not for all new account holder.

Because, my friend who got e-mail from IB submitted his ID and ticket later than me but I do not reply from IB so far.

I am holding in a tight. Finger crossed.

Refresher for everyone: one of the few things that the media and the airlines pay attention to in the US is the monthly DOT complaint report. If you are a US-based flyer who booked your ticket on the US site, I strongly suggest you file a report here:

https://www.transportation.gov/airco...umer-complaint

As a reminder, airlines must acknowledge these complaints within 30 days and send a response within 60 days per the DOT's regulations.

Do you understand how the concept of "goodwill" works in a biz environment? Yes - United did, and should have, received backlash for perhaps beating a PHD who had absolutely no recourse to the point where he received a head injury. Are they existing as a viable business entity? Yes - probably because of inertia. Is their business strategy sustainable? Remains to be seen - depends on how long people's memories are. Is Iberia in the same position as United? No they are not.

I don't think IB care that much about those who created an account to just book flights they had no intention of flying just to get 90,000 Avios. You win some, you lose some. Simple as that.

I had an old account, but didn't feel right about booking flight that I wasn't going to take. In hindsight, I'm happy with that choice.

Edit: looks like I missed one above that did receive the points...I still haven't heard anything, but suspect they're going to deny me because I'm in Canada, though everything else complied with the T&C (well, everything complied as there was no mention of country of residence).
Its probably worth waiting until you receive the "inconsistency" email but from there have you considered contacting your local provincial consumer affairs office: hXXps://ic.gc.ca/eic/site/oca-bc.nsf/eng/ca02965.html (replace XX with t)?

I'm not a lawyer but it looks like breach of contract which I'm sure any American victim will highlight to Iberia in the Courts.

I posted earlier about Iberia deleting a second account created due to their lousy website. My "original" account is now accessible and I see no bookings on it, of course. When checking the bookings again, they do all still have the IB # for the now-deleted account shown. I have not heard back from my email I sent on the 6th regarding them deleting an account that had bookings associated it while leaving open a dormant account (lol). I received the email reception email after about 12 hours.

So a simple question - would changing the IB # on a booking do anything for me if the booking was made during the promo? Is this an angle worth pursuing? So many wasted man-hours but they did this to themselves.

Data point - new account created on the Sunday. I booked 10 legit flights I planned to take (actually 11 flights but 10 bookings). ID sent Monday evening and again when requested on Wednesday. Received email saying still looking and wait a few days. No email received since but miles in.

Also so signed up 5 family members with 10 one way domestic flights each. All sent in ID on Monday then again on Wednesday. 1 account deleted because duplicate (definitely not duplicate and everything done right), 2 got inconsistencies emails and 2 have heard nothing.

Glad my new account has received something!

Just thought I'd add to say that things should be considered from the company's perspective - if you had people making accounts for their dog and imaginary friend to abuse the promotion, you'd look into it just the same.

Going into this, the worst case scenario was not getting the promotion Avios and potentially losing that $300. Others were okay with that if you read earlier posts. You took a gamble and it didn't work out, what's with all the talk about litigation? Sounds like a bunch of salt to me. What's more is that the worst case scenario now is merely getting your money back (and not getting the Avios). Barely something to shout about, apart from losing a few hours of your time making bookings you weren't intending on flying anyway.

I don't really understand why people (including bloggers) are grouping together the 'people making accounts for their dog and imaginary friend' with those who simply opened new accounts and booked the cheapest flights available. One group is definitely abusing the terms of the terms of the promo, the other is following the rules as advised by Iberia. And even if you feel that booking one way domestic flights was abuse, then you should at least I hope agree that Iberia have not dealt with this well.

I've had an IB account open since 2007 (11 years), but it turns out it had gone in to dormant/inactive status though as I haven't credited anything to it in over three years.

I booked 10 flights during the promotion without thinking there would be any problem...

Then after the promotion I tried to combine my Avios from BAEC in to Iberia, so I had enough points for a return business class redemption (needed to add 35,000 avios), which didn't work. After hours of investigating, this is where i worked out that my IB account was dormant, which is why you can't use combine my avios. Anyway, I managed to get the account active again (by sending 1000 points from Amex).

Now I'm still waiting for my 90,000 bonus avios to arrive. I've emailed clasica.at.iberia.es, got an automated response immediately, but I still haven't heard back from them... No requests for passport or anything else.

The flights I booked were all one ways from Asturias to Madrid. Some booked close together, others not...

Hoping my points post soon.
