  • Login problems: If you have trouble logging into the Iberia website, type in your number and password by hand instead of using autocomplete. For some people this fixes login issues.
  • Partner awards: Many flights on partners will not be available as one-way. You must redeem AA flights as a round trip for example
  • Cancellations: Iberia awards on AA cannot be cancelled.
Iberia Plus offer 9000 per booking 21/JUN to 24/JUN on iberia.com

why would anyone here care about this?

Thanks for the smart comment !

I just found it interesting to consider how much IB raked in from this promo. And $12 in tax in multiples of hundreds of thousands of tickets is a lot of un used tax.

I think there are not strictly taxes (like VAT, or income tax,...) they are pax fees/charges.

My etickets show eur18 base fare, eur0 carrier charges and EUR9.27 taxes and duties. So they are taxes.

When I log in to my Iberia account (new account), I can see all of my reservations. I went in this morning and added my IB number to each reservation with no problems. Now, I just wait for the 90K Avios and need to decide what to book by December 1.

Sorry - let me tell you that the e-ticket receipt is not gonna differentiate between a fee and a tax, that's why they put it in the same box. However, it its worth doing some research. For instance, a ticket from Palma (PMI) to Madrid (MAD) has the following "taxes and duties":

Tasas y cargos del operador Importe
Cargo por salida - Espańa 4,77€
Tasa de seguridad 0,53€
Seguridad 2,49€

Which are actually wrongly translated into the English:
Taxes and carrier charges Amount
Departure Charge - Spain €4.77
Security Tax €0.53
Security €2.49
Because a "tasa" is not a "tax", unlike an "impuesto". A "tasa" is just a fee.

Which are not taxes, but fees. However, there may be other situtations when there's a tax involved, like flights originating in the UK.

There was a scenario which involved refundable flights. Yes the T&C says that cancelling flights means the points will be clawed back, but that's not a deal breaker. Do 10x fully refundables, get the points and wait to see what happens after 10 days when people get the points and start to use them/transfer them. Once you get a sense of how IB is going to handle it you can make a judgement whether to just cancel the flights and get a full refund (nothing gained/nothing lost), or use the points then do the cancellations, 90K points for no outlay. A Ł30 cheapie was around Ł300 for a fully refundable( no admin charge), and I guess tying Ł3K up for a while might not suit everyone.

Same situation - I used IB's MMB to add the number one by one this morning. Interestingly, I could see all 10 bookings before I started by clicking on the Booking tab on IB's homepage, but then as I started adding the numbers to the records, I could then only see the bookings with the numbers I added.

They're still third party fees, as opposed to carrier imposed fees which are a separate line item (and 0 for my bookings), even a fee to a third party should presumably be refunded if it isn't utilized, the airport that charges a levy, fee or duty for secuirseor whatever isn't going to receive that fee for a pax who doesn't actually travel, so the airline is then basically keeping it for themselves

Yes, they will cash it into their pockets if you decide not to travel. But then, it's not "normal" to buy a ticket if you know you are not going to fly it.

Anyway, it's your legitimate right to request the refund for airport/security fees, taxes,... however Iberia charges a "25 eur administration fee" per e-ticket. Your choice.

I got my one ticket refunded within 24 hours, The DOT says that if a foreign carrier markets in the US they must offer the 24 hour cancellation. https://www.transportation.gov/sites...20130530_0.pdf

i was going to go in for this but thought better of it given the aggravating experiences i have had previously with IB. I called 16 hours after making the res and after the MIA based res agent consulted her supervisor she said, yes, i was correct and the booking will be cancelled and refunded. It was in pending status on my CC when I called and now its gone completely. So, yes you can get a 24 hour xl and refund if you are in the U.S.

I think Iberia IT are now frantically trying to figure out a way to ringfence & track these Avios after someone came up with this promo without thinking it all through properly ;-)

I did not plan to transfer miles to BAEC. I even tried to book flights, which I could use for sightseeing. Some will not be used but maybe I will manage a weekend or two away.

Expecting to see a devaluation on hotels after this as hotels will be everyones default go-to if (when) they can't find seat availability.... and its always important to check the actual hotel cash price elsewhere too.
It might look like a great use of Avios compared to the cash price Iberia are selling the hotel at, but you might find it much cheaper elsewhere.
Just be cautious.

Finnair.com is another place you can always update the FF# on a OneWorld ticket.

Also, just another datapoint. New IB account setup for a family member on Saturday - had IB FF# in emailed confirmations and couldn't add via FinnAir website all weekend, but finally this morning it worked with no problem. Very clear to me that the IB number cannot be used anywhere in Amadeus system until about 48hrs after creation. Not sure why, but no big deal.

Well, it'll be bloody hard to get the New York seats as so many people will be after those I'm guessing.
