Interpreting a Cancellation Policy

I find some messages on reservations very criptic, and have found this one on a recent award booking:

"Cancellation Policy: Cancel By 2pm 24 Hours Prior To Arrival - 1 Ngts Chg"

To me this can mean either: "Cancel by 2p the day before OR pay for one night" or "Even if you cancel by 2p the day before you still have to pay for one night".

So which one is it?

And on an award, would your credit card be charged and points kept, or points returned and credit card charged?

Hmm. Me personally, I would interpret this as getting hit to your credit card 1 night rack rate for your room category if cancel after 2:00 PM the day before you are supposed to check-in...

1. Poor wording - but its "Cancel by 2p the day before OR pay for one night"

2. No idea about this one.

Just to update and clarify...I did call the Diamond line (before they shut down yesterday) and cancelled my award booking on which this comment appeared. The agent confirmed that the payment was only due if the res was not cancelled prior to 24-hours before check-in date.
