20 New, New Hyatt Places

News release:

6/28/2007 11:26:35 AM

Hyatt Place today announced its development results for the first half of 2007 with an additional 20 new build hotels, bringing the total number of new build Hyatt Place projects under development to 50 hotels. These new projects – which include the first Hyatt Place hotels in major metropolitan markets – will add to Hyatt Place’s rapidly growing portfolio, which will reach 120 hotels nationwide by year-end 2007.

I think it is simple, a much quicker ROI with these suburban properties opposed to where most GH or PH are located. What was the last opening of PH/GH? Denver? I don't blame them. Plus the cost of a 100 room property in these locations is much cheaper than a 200+ room location in a metro area. Plus the overall operating costs. While not directly competing with Hilton or Marriott, they were losing money and market share without this segment.

Retreat domestically; expansion overseas

Whatever the reason, Hyatt is definitely on a retreat with the domestic Park, Grand and Regency brands. Expansions are in India, China and other Asian venues.
