Yes, same experience here with DSU, 2 bedrooms that they removed the bed from one and put in a couch with a long Z hallway in between.

Absolutely do not use a DSU here!

I have only been here during club closures, so can't comment on that. The breakfast in the restaurant was nice.

I don't have a general disdain for the place, and frankly don't see the Motel6 comparison.

We have stayed at the Loden just down the street - it is lovely.

That about sums it up... Don't ever get a suite here.

What bothers me most is the misrepresentation I feel is made. And therefore feeling lied to and setup for a disappointment. What I got was simply 2 connecting rooms, not a suite.

But I'm now in one of the "executive suites". The layout isn't that much better, still the result of combining two rooms. But the connection is a bit better, there still is a door separating the bedroom from the hallway... but it's not a double door that cannot even be opened fully. And instead of two mediocre bathrooms there is now one that is bigger and a more kitchen like area with a better coffee machine.

The bathroom is where the motel6 reference was for. Having to step into a, very small, bathtub to get a shower is not what I expected here. And as mentioned before the bathrooms were oddly designed with a washbasin that was also way too low. That is better in this version as well.

I rather dislike having to play the status card, simply give me the better room if it's available without me having to ask for it. By offering it to me now that negative experience is still there. Even with the partial sea view I have now....

The Loden came up in my search for an alternative as well, looked nice. I'm back in the city in September so I will need a place to stay then.

This property has some amazing suites on the top floors, including a few that are two level. Of course, they are not generally DSU-eligible.

I personally don't have any concerns with the standard suites. The two-room layout is more spacious than a typical Junior Suite, and it allows one to watch TV, get work done, etc while someone is sleeping in the adjacent room. Not sure where all the anger is coming from!

RTW1 Jun 7, 2014 10:11 am

That there are great suites available when I'm not in one doesn't really help :-). But I see what you mean when I look at the floorplan. There seem to be rooms that don't have an odd layout...

And the "anger" is just disappointment at being fobbed off with two connecting rooms instead of a suite...that's a setup that's useless to me and not what I booked. Combine that with the mediocre quality of both of those rooms, and I feel cheated. But it's like with most things.... I really should have done more homework and read that the standard suites are not quite that. Even better would have been an honest answer when I questioned them about my "upgrade" when that reservation showed two rooms.

So to be helpfull to others who might read this when considering this property and booking a "suite". This is exactly what I have gotten so far, when booked on a P+C rate and a DSU (I know I'm every properties worst revenue generating guest with this...):

-Room 1 and 2 sold a a suite. Two doors, two roomnumbers, essentially what was mentioned by balkitad two standard rooms where one bed was taken out and replaced by a sofa/bed. Two bathrooms, two chairs and two desks. Bathrooms were very mediocre with a washbasin that was about 15-20cm's lower than standard and to take a shower you had to step into a very small bathtub. Regular average coffee machines. Small balcony in the room with the bed. And connecting the rooms a double set of connecting doors where one could only be opened partially so you almost had to squeeze through. Very impractical layout as well.

- Room 3, more like an actual suite. One door, one room number, still a bit of an odd layout where the living room is at the end of a hallway, one bigger bathroom in the bedroom with a small kitchen like area at the end of the hall. Same balcony area in the bedroom. Oddly decorated bathroom though, more like an ADA design, big shower area with a seat and no bath. Toilet placed right next to the wasbasin (that is at the right height this time) when there's plenty of room for a better position. Upgraded coffee machine. Small and impractical closet in the bedroom.

Even that new room falls short of what in my definition a decent suite should be. No bath (I appreciate a nice soak after a long day), no seperate toilet and not a decent sitting area (chair isn't bad but the sofa/bed is). And still a bit awkward in layout. Plus minor inconveniences like light switches outside of the bathroom, motion activated AC in the rooms so it get's really hot when not there, centrally controlled light (very, very bright) on the balcony with no way to switch off in the evening or night when you want a dark bedroom, etc. Small and cramped lounge and nothing as a welcome letter (not that I normally care but it's just more proof that the property doesn't actually pay attention).

Still, If they just had offered me the room I'm in now that would have prevented most of the disappointment. That's what it's all about, meeting expectations. A DSU should be worth something. I can get by with a standard room just fine if I know that's what I'm getting.

And just to be clear, staff I interacted with in general have been great so far so no complaints about that. But looking at the hotel as a whole it's simply a very average HR property, nothing that makes it the least luxurious. Location is good though, but rates are quite high for what you get so I will still be staying with the competition next time.

But it's a beautiful day outside (again) so I'm not going to be in the room for long :-).

What are the hours of the RC here? I've got a stay in August and wondering if I'll get RC closure points.

RTW1 Jun 11, 2014 3:10 pm

I wouldn't count on it.... They only seem to close the club in the off-season, August isn't exactly that.

Thanks.

Is this still the case for Sunday nights?

Stayed at this hotel after spending a night at Fairmont pacific rim. I knew I was going to be disappointed but for 12k/night, I am satisfied. This is a standard business hotel like courtyard and it is in very good condition. It was built or renovated in 2005 and everything works and you won't feel like staying in a worn out tired hotel (unlike many radissons or marriotts). The location is pretty decent too. 5 min walk to canada place, shopping on Robson St, restaurants on Granville St and public transit.

We parked at 509 Hornby. The overnight charge was $5.5 and when we checked out at 11am, we were charged another 5.5 for a total of $11. This was much more affordable than the hotel parking.

First time at this Hyatt for me and no complaints. Clean, well maintained room on 29th floor. Breakfast in Club Lounge and hors d'oeuvres in the evening offered a nice selection of dishes. Small charge for alcoholic drinks. Staff in Lounge always helpful. Great location in Vancouver and only two blocks from the Sky Train station

@baliktad do you recall if your room was confirmed as a "Junior Suite"? Mixed reviews at the property over the last year and am wondering how they could be so divergent?

RTW1 Jan 27, 2015 12:40 am

I know that when I used a DSU that I could see that two reservations were made.... was suspicious at that time, and that was confirmed when I got the standard entry level suite. Basically two rooms with a connecting door and a very bad layout, the most useless suite I ever did get.
For the rest the hotel is just a very basic HR, the lounge is very small and unattractive. But the location is good.

I think the following statement may sum up all of Hyatt's Canadian properties:

"Well located, but disappointing hard product."

How can every Hyatt in Canada need renovation? (Disclaimer, I have never been to Calgary)

britishcanuck Jan 27, 2015 10:58 am

I've stayed a handful of times this past year. Yet to get a suite upgrade. I quite enjoyed the breakfast in the restaurant when the club was closed.

Had a couple one night stays in December before/after going to Whistler. The Whistler shuttle picks up and drops off right at the hotel, which was nice.

craigthemif Jan 27, 2015 4:11 pm

Suite is indeed useless. I wasted an expiring DSU on a 1-night stay and spent no more than 15 minutes in the connector room.

Given the set-up, I can't imagine anybody is upgraded to a suite. They are simply sold to people who might want a second room due to family size, etc.

As mentioned, this property is nothing special, but stay for 1 night pre Whistler and 1 night post, with the lounge closed, and that's 3500+ points per night for Diamonds plus a decent restaurant breakfast. :)

The DSU standard suite is that.... but there are a few decent suites to be had. You just don't get them because you are Diamond and that's rather sad.

I used a DSU at the Vancouver property in November 2014 and it was a completely a wasted use of an upgrade. The Junior Suite is completely useless. A couple of years ago I received a two-story suite that was AMAZING on New Years Eve as a complementary upgrade. No such luck as a Diamond member booking standard nights and or DSU's.

Regency Club will be reopening full time earlier than previously announced. Full opening as of March 2 now. So, one weekend left to squeeze in a stay or two to get the 2500 Lounge closure points for Diamonds!

Stayed here about a week ago - drug (not drugged) a couple of friends up to the PNW who aren't used to staying in nicer hotels.

To me, this was an above average central city hyatt. The rooms were nice... the club was small but good enough. Food was good. Was a little weird one night when I was asked as we exited the door if we had filled out an honor card... which I promptly pointed at it laying on the table we just left. I thought this was pretty bush league and insulting but whatever. I've obviously stayed at a large number of hyatt properties, and Ive never had that happen prior. As for the rooms, they were good. Decent sized, standard hyatt property remodel/refresh. We got the club floor for both rooms I booked.

As for my friends: they viewed it as an amazing/stunning property. They're a little sheltered.

Stayed here last year for 2 nights in a club room prior to a cruise. Very nice hotel, getting off the elevator for the first time was interesting as the work of art facing us is the exact same piece we have in our living room.

They had the same art on every floor we checked as well.

Pic of art

The club was awesome and the concierge super helpful. I though it was a very nice hotel with a good location- We will defiantly be back next time we sail out of Vancouver.

britishcanuck Apr 11, 2015 12:40 pm

Staying here now. Came up for my birthday weekend and met my parents here. Booked two rooms, one for me, one for them. Was initially told at check in that only I would have access to the club, pushed the issue a bit as I could have easily booked one room for three people and we would have all been entitled to it, but booking two separate rooms I'm not? In the end she relented and said it was fine.

I know the official rule is Diamond benefits are to the room the member in staying in, but I've never seen anyone enforce it before. Both rooms are under my name.

I would have understood it a little more if it wasn't just me staying in my room.

Had two stays here last December with multiple rooms and never had a problem.

MarkP24 Apr 12, 2015 1:07 pm

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here! Absolutely exceptional property with excellent staff! The views were great as well.

Wow, did this hotel get renovated? Showed up as a 4.5* on Priceline NYOP! It was not that impressive when I stayed there 6 years ago.

britishcanuck Jan 5, 2016 11:54 am

Just had another quick one night stay here. No suite upgrade, as per usual. Got a nice room on the 31st floor with partial mountain views. When asked if I wanted late checkout, I mentioned we had an early flight and would be leaving the hotel around 5:30 am. The front desk agent (Foxx) kindly offered to have a boxed breakfast prepared for us as we would be leaving before the Regency Club opened.

When I woke up in the morning, I found a letter under the door stating that breakfast would be ready when we check out. We each got a paper bag filled with a delicious turkey croissant, flax muffin, granola bar and a bottle of water and orange juice. This turned out to be great as we would have had no time to eat anything else due to transportation delays and airport congestion.

This was a very nice touch, and will continue to stay as my go-to hotel in Vancouver.

Lovely

One night stay ... Congestion on the driveway (it's way too small for the capacity of the hotel) and bellmen hurried us along. Terry at check in more than made up for that! He was so nice and professional, treated us like royalty even though we are lowly Plats :). We got a corner room, 4p checkout and a tour of the lobby including their cool elevators that you call by destination floor. Very efficient! Grain bar in the lobby was stellar at night, our server Heidi was so knowledgable and friendly. RC was just ok, again too small for capacity but staff was sweet and working hard. Offerings were minimal for evening and breakfast but each item was of good quality. Staying again in a couple months and already looking forward!

VIT-B Mar 20, 2016 3:39 pm

Using a DSU is waste of an upgrade at this property. The only way I would use a DSU is if I was in Vancouver close to the end of February and I still had an upgrade left. I've received way better suite upgrades from booking a Standard room at this property.

Jasonkr Apr 28, 2016 3:37 pm

Junior suite had either 1 King bed or 2 Double beds. (both are connecting rooms)

Room
Suite room had separate bathroom, refrigerator, closet. also pull out couch.
King bed had balcony access and felt little bit bigger than 2 Double beds room (Great for smokers IMO) (connecting door located near door)
2 Double beds room was ok. nothing special. (connecting door located near work desk)

Personally I would not waste DSU on this, unless you are planning to stay more than 3 days and getting King bed (with balcony)

Regency Club
Good selection of food, drinks. it was tasty! also very friendly staff.

Parking
I only had to pay $36 CAD (Friday 6PM to Sunday afternoon) really cheap!

Hiccups
Lost keys, got a new key, one key did not open up the one of two rooms that I booked, asked front desk staff to get me a new key. then we could not get a access to Regency club. Asked again. then one front desk staff told us that regency club closes at 9PM on weekends? (she clearly did not know, but it closes at 10PM). but she escorted us to the club.

Other than that, it was great stay!

I think sometimes it's a matter of asking. I used to just use DSU and never asked. Since I started asking, I would get upgraded at least 25-30% of the times, especially on 1 night stays. I got upgraded to a Presidential suite here on a 1 (Saturday) night stay before WOH was announced.

Review of Hyatt Regency Vancouver with some pictures:

Stayed here at the end of Jan. 2017 for a few days between two hotels (this one obviously and the nearby Rosewood Hotel Georgia) to finally get to look around Vancouver and get to know it a bit better.

There is a bit more to this review than just the hotel room, so if you are only interested in the hotel review please bypass this bit and go down a bit lower to the point where Check In starts. Thanks. For those interested in the city and the rest of the story…read on…

General starting point for this trip and reason for being here:

“Where are you from?” Sounds like an innocent enough question and we each get asked this many times in our frequent traveller lives I am sure. Maybe this is an easy question for many that travel extensively but were born in the same place (be that a town/city/province/state/county or region) they grew up in and still reside in.

I have been down the less travelled path, having moved extensively even as a child, across and up and down this great country, from above the Arctic Circle to a few years on a ship based out of Halifax and feel very conflicted about how to answer such an innocent question as although I was born near Vancouver, I have never lived there, yet my family moved back here after I left home to make my own way in the world…To further complicate this, I’ve been privileged enough to travel and live in a few countries elsewhere in the world and have now lived longer outside of Canada than I did in it…My citizenship remains Canadian but increasingly I wonder who I am and where do I call home/where am I from?

With my parents having returned to B.C for their retirement years., anytime I tell people I am going back to see them and they ask where, I have this situation where I say B.C. or Vancouver, and then people say, oh, that must be a nice place (or worse, oh, I’ve been there and really liked xx…) to which I have to reply that I’ve no idea really (which gets some looks I can tell you) as although I was born here and my parents are back here now, I’ve never spent any length of time in B.C. and whenever I have travelled back it has been to land at YVR and then get a rental car and go to where they were living (for a while it was Nanaimo, now it is near Kelowna) so I’ve never spent more than a single night in Vancouver at a time and then only at the airport! I’ve spent more time on vacation in some countries than I have in the city where I was born.

To add to that, having lived so long outside of Canada (over 25 years now), I have the odd identity crisis where I do not know if I should be calling myself Canadian, British, German or European…or just simply lost!

So, a very long lead-in to why I was staying here, I wanted to finally spend a week at least in the city nearest to where I was born to finally explore and start to get to know this great city and see if I call it “home”, still use the occasion to get to see some family and also try to see if I still felt comfortable calling myself Canadian or if I would be a stranger in my own land.

The reason for choosing this hotel was a combination of location, ease of access to everywhere on foot or public transport (I’m a fan), price and the ability to use some points to help offset the costs, especially given the rather sharp decline of the UK Pound since the Brexit referendum.

I stayed at this hotel twice in the end, first time around it was for 3 nights in a room for me on cash rate, combined with 2 nights on cash and points for my parents in another room and then a day use stay here again a few days later at the end of the trip paid with cash to bridge the time gap between check out at the nearby Rosewood Hotel Georgia and my late evening flight back to the UK (which was cheaper than extending the check out at the Rosewood).

I did very much enjoy the city, the people, the diversity and the food. I’d happily live in B.C. again and somewhere near Vancouver (It’d be nice to be able to afford to live in it I’m sure but not for the compromise on the value one gets for the money here compared to a few hours away.) I’m finally able to at least say I’ve been briefly to some of the main places and tourist sites as well as being able to recognise some of the things that people talk about when they say they’ve been here. ^

I look forward to returning to explore the city more again sometime, when time and circumstances allow and feel slightly more comfortable still calling myself Canadian. (eh?) :)

You can certainly explore most of Vancouver by foot if the weather is nice and with public transport (the sky train is great, as was using the buses every now and again) you can get a surprising distance covered without the need for a car. The hotel was great for walks between rain showers given the time of year and to be able to walk to most restaurants I tried while staying here. I tended to just walk around and choose restaurants spontaneously where possible but given the size and popularity of the city, some places did require reservations (especially those rated highly on TripAdvisor).

I tended to walk around 12 Km as a minimum each day and the days that i went further, such as walking to Stanley Park using the coast path and then back through the other side of the city and looking around without a specific (shorter) path, it was easily 20 Km so you may wish to consider some assistance to get to places if you have some trouble getting around.

I used the Sky Train to get to downtown and back from the airport and it was easy to use and follow stops and the payment was very reasonable in my mind compared to a taxi. I travel light so only had hand baggage (one shoulder bag) so wasn’t worried about step free access but it is worth noting that some stations did not have working escalators or lifts so you may need to check that before deciding where to exit as a nearby station may be step free and only a few blocks from where you were first thinking of exiting.

Obviously the seafood was brilliant here with the large Asian community that so prizes this cuisine, however, there was plenty of other choices as well and I didn’t feel that I was only having one or two choices besides the usual meat and potato choices…

There was plenty of shopping venues nearby for every type of retail therapy as well as plenty of nice and different choices for coffee shops, art venues and museums. A great city.

Now to the hotel review, thanks for persevering!

Check-In: I had done online check in using the app, I have no status to speak of and mentioned I would be arriving very late (after 10 PM). I happened to have my birthday during my stay but this did not flag up anywhere on their systems so a missed opportunity on their part (even though I had left them a note about this in comments) but it didn’t detract from the hotel stay in any way. The front desk staff was great and friendly. I was quickly on my way to the room (which has the funky and certainly for first users, confusing elevator call system which is touch screen based but outside the lifts and takes some getting used to). I mentioned that I had a second reservation for my parents the next day and they confirmed this for me as well.

The lobby area is quite large and there are quite big glass areas to watch the commuters go by or other tourists during the day if you wish from the main lobby seating area where you enter the hotel or from the Starbucks that is integrated into the lobby corner of the building and was generally always busy due to the convenient location for people passing by.

Parking is underground and can be valet or self park. My parents used the garage and the lifts are opposite the room elevators and fairly easy to use but there are still some doors and to and fro’ing that is needed so can be a pain if you had large bags or several family members. The cost for two nights of parking was $ 70 CDN (as a hotel guest) which I could put on my room bill.

There are two bars here and one restaurant, the bar on the ground floor was better in my opinion and I used it several nights to have a drink and people watch, it was generally always quite busy and lively here (it was the weekend though so may be quiet other times). They had good service and staff and I could customise my G & T to my liking which was good! I noticed everything from young singles to families having a light meal here over the various days.

The second floor has another bar area off the main hotel and it was also busy but not as much ambience in my view, we never used it to be honest as it tended to be more function based for the conferences that are going on during the time. The restaurant was okay, the staff were very good that we had for the two times we used it for breakfast (no other occasion). I choose the buffet one morning and found it a bit limited for a Hyatt to be honest but it sufficed and was the best ‘value’ eating in the restaurant, however, I also did a la carte breakfast one morning and although it was more expensive it was very good.

I was on the floor where the club lounge was located and there seemed to be people coming and going so it was obviously open and getting good use, although I didn’t have access so can’t comment further.

The Room:

I booked a basic room with a King bed and also booked the same on cash and points for my parents the next day, they were both decent rooms and I could stay in one for a week or so without issue but it is a good indicator of the differences (to me) between Grand or Park Hyatts and Regency locations as this reminded me very much of a standard Hilton in the USA or Canada, especially in the bathroom where the space and items are representative of the usual low height shower over bath. (although this had at least tiles instead of that dreadful wraparound plastic one piece cheap wall covering). There was a curtain for the shower which is not my favourite either but it worked okay.

The amenities were more basic compared to the Seattle Grand Hyatt I was just in, I didn’t use them as I had taken the amenities from the Seattle Hyatt. There were bathrobes and slippers here which I assume is part of the brand standard for this chain and a nice touch above competitors for the price.

I found the stays good, it was decent value for money or cash and points and also for the day use period for cash I took advantage of at the end (although that room was two single beds but otherwise the same as my room pictures below. I couldn’t seem to find day rates on the app so just walked over and asked at the front desk.

Hope this review and mini trip report style review are of interest and use.

Nice Review.

Just stayed here. Service was impeccable and was taken care of by VIP manager in preparing some chocolates and flowers for my SO. Lounge was in great shape with great service there too.

Only thing is I didn't get an UG. But nice to have the free parking thing now as a globalist.
