How much does 1 GP pt equivalent to $ ???
When we use our points for hotel redeemption, how would you decide whether you would use your gp points or cash. I know AA airmile is about $0.03 = 1 mile. Do you guys have a $=gpp value in your mind?
|
I think most people would value a GP point at 1-1.5 cents each. I tend to agree although don't usually use points for stays unless the cash cost approaches $300 for category 4 hotel (15,000 points).

In regards to Hyatt Gold Passport points, I generally value them at somewhere around 1.6 to 2.3 cents per point. Sometimes I get redemption values where 1 point gives me c. 4.5 cents of value. |

In general I agree with peteropny. However in addition to the room rate, I always take the tax and service (and resort fee, if applicable) into account. In Egypt, for example, a $200 per night room will cost you $248 at checkout.
Some countries (Indonesia, India, Egypt - to name a few) have very, very high rates of tax I value my GP points at about 2 cents |
I've recently raised my valuation of a GP point from 1.0 cents to 1.4 cents. Of course I always try to get better than that when redeeming points, so my value isn't exactly what I think I can redeem for, rather about what I would pay for one.
BTW, I value an AA mile at 1.0 cents. |
1.5-2.5 c/point.
Additionally they are much harder to earn (no affiliated cc, fewer properties/members etc) and sometimes hotels have award availability but come up as sold out otherwise. |
I value them at about 2 cents, and perhaps a little more if I include the value of paying for the least expensive room and getting a more expensive room as a diamond.

2 - 3.5 cents for me. We usually redeem at the Hyatt near Disneyland (a Cat 1 hotel). Not worth using at other locations unless the rate tops at least $250/night.
As Diamond, for 5k points we get a suite upgrade, full breakfast for two, and a great launching pad for our Disneyland trip. Used 15k at the Manchester Grand once for a FFN night run back in 2004. I'd take three nights near DL over that any time. It was nice, just not worth 15k. |
I've managed to translate 6k points into $1,800-$2400 of value. Park Hyatt Moscow, sweet suite upgrades for four nights. :)

On the subject of great scores...
16k for 2 nights at the Hyatt Dearborn for Superbowl weekend. ^ :D Technically worth about $600 (3.75 cents/per point). In reality, the hotel was already sold out of regular rooms, so much higher to me. |

The real value is how much YOU would have been willing to pay for that room in hard cash and divide that by the number of points required to come up with the cents/per point ratio. Because people are willing to pay different amounts for room/airline seats the price/mile/point varies a lot. |

That said, your above points -- including those about objectively valuing points -- are correct. :) |
Using $$ that I would pay to stay, I think a reasonable
value per point is about $0.03. I only use points in Europe or Asia , so maybe thats why I put such a high value on them. |
