It looks like I'm first!

I stayed at the StandardX for two nights during the week of June 23. I enjoyed my stay, but there were positives and negatives, as is usually the case. Because I stayed at the HC in 2024 and the GH in 2023, I will use one or both of them as points of comparison from time to time in my review.

This was my seventh trip to Melbourne, and I had stayed in the CBD during my previous six trips. The StandardX is located in Fitzroy, and I'm not sure if I had ever explored Fitzroy or nearby Carlton during any of my previous visits. From a convenience standpoint, it's tough to beat the HC with its proximity to Southern Cross Station. From a touristy standpoint, the GH would probably be the best because of its location at Collins and Russell. The StandardX is in the least convenient, least touristy location of the three, but whether that's a disadvantage is up to you.

I checked in around 4 p.m. after my Uber ride from the airport. The young lady at the front desk welcomed me as a Globalist and explained the facilities. She told me that non-alcoholic items in the minibar were complimentary, and that I could get more items (for a charge) at the little shop near the front desk. I had booked a standard king room and was upgraded to a deluxe city view room (room 514). Because it was a corner room, I had a view of the Melbourne skyline to the south and the Fitzroy Market to the west.

The room itself was a decent size for one person, and I think it would be comfortable for two people unless they both had a lot of luggage. The reason I say that is because the room didn't have a closet, just a rack for hanging clothes or whatever. The bed was comfortable, and there were no issues with noise during my two-night stay. As for the minibar, there was nothing in it, but there was a bottle of still water along with two bags of snacks (mixed nuts and chocolate disks) on top of the refrigerator.

Breakfast was available at Bang, the hotel's restaurant. The service was friendly and attentive, and the menu was eclectic but somewhat limited. I had the eggs with toast and bacon one morning and eggs with toast and sausages the other morning. The breakfasts, including juice and coffee, were removed from my bill because of my Globalist status, but the tips I left each morning were not. (I apologize for tipping to any Aussies who read this, but it's in my DNA. They were small tips... about 10% of the bill.) I didn't have any other meals at the restaurant.)

The other common areas were very nice. The lobby is like a library or den, but the standout is the roof. The roof is only available to guests; a room key is required to the elevator to that level. The weather was typical for Melbourne in late June, but I can imagine this would be a nice place to relax on a sunny day.

The immediate area surrounding the hotel was quiet while I was there. I don't know if that's normal. It seemed to be a combination of residential buildings and parking lots/garages. The hotel itself is on Rose Street, which is a cool walk if you enjoy street art. The street itself has roses painted on it.

The closest busy streets are Brunswick St. (a block to the east), Nicholson St (a few blocks to the west) and Johnston St. (three blocks to the south). There's a Cole's supermarket on Johnston St., and there are restaurants on Brunswick and Johnston. My favorite was A1 Bakery near the corner of Johnston and Brunswick... definitely worth a try if you enjoy Middle Eastern baked goods. The closest tram stop was on Brunswick, and there's another on Nicholson. You will need a Myki card to ride trams because the hotel is a few stops outside the CBD's free tram zone. I forgot my Myki card, but I was able to buy one and top it up at the 7-Eleven at Johnston and Brunswick.

During my two-night stay, the StandardX was the least expensive Hyatt property in Melbourne at A$215.10 per night. The HC was only a few dollars more.

Will I stay at the StandardX again the next time in Melbourne. I am not sure, because the HC has some advantages:
  • While I got a decent upgrade at the StandardX, the upgrade I got to a one-bedroom suite at the HC last year was much better.
  • The breakfast was good at the StandardX, but the buffet at the HC offered more variety. Having said that, I prefer table service to buffets.
  • As mentioned earlier, the StandardX is outside the CBD, so it's not as convenient as the HC if your focus is on tourism or getting to/from the airport. The HC is a few minutes by foot from Southern Cross Station, so catching the Skybus is simple. However, public transportation from the StandardX to the airport would involve a 20-minute tram ride to Southern Cross Station to catch the Skybus. I took Uber each way instead; expect the ride to cost A$45-60.
Even with the HC's advantages, the StandardX has a more charming and intimate feel that will make me consider it again the next time I visit Melbourne.

Had a four night stay at the Standard X last week. Booked the Suite Spot. Very spacious room with good views across the adjacent suburbs towards the CBD. Staff were excellent in all areas of the hotel. Breakfast in Bistro X was very good and we had dinner there on our first night. This hotel is in an interesting area of Melbourne with easy access to recommended restaurants in Fitzroy and Collingwood. There is a rooftop bar with ample seating. Although the hotel was fully booked the room was so quiet at night and we slept well. Recommended if you don't have to be in the CBD for work

Just completed a nice four night award stay on a GOH certificate as an Explorist. Globalist recognition was a little slow, but was able to get 4pm checkout and free parking without too much prodding - one person at the front desk said that they didn't get many globalists. Breakfast was quite generous, with the ability to pick an entree, side, coffee, and juice. The food was very good. The location is a bit out of the CBD, but it's easy to take the tram down there. The neighborhood felt a bit sleepy, but that may have been because people tend to go on holiday at this time of year.

My partner and I had one-night stay here recently. We feel like it's the kind of property where you feel out of place if you don't have at least one tattoo and one piercing.

I received a text message from the hotel a couple of days before arrival asking if it was a special occasion and asking if I had any questions. I replied saying no and we'd require the 4pm checkout. A reply came confirming that. On check-in, we were asked if we'd need the 4pm checkout! We paid in cash because the hotel imposes an outrageous 1.85% fee for Visa and Mastercard (higher for Amex). We were upgraded to a balcony king which appears to be the highest non-suite category, this hotel being one of the growing list that doesn't allow suite upgrade awards. (There was a suite available but I've never been able to work out whether the upgrade-on-arrival (to a standard suite, where available) Globalist benefit applies at properties where you can't apply an SUA.) We were given two vouchers for complimentary drinks at the lobby bar which we only noticed when we opened the keycard jacket.

The room was compact but not overly so, although I doubt we could spend more than two or three nights there. The bathroom sink is bizarrely deep. There was a handwritten welcome note (nice) and a try of three lollies that weighed probably all of 15 grams (seriously, why bother/).

Breakfast is available from 7am to 10.30am (we stayed on a weekday so it may vary on weekends) with coffee available from 6.30am. For those with rates that include it (such as Globalists), breakfast allows for one main, one side and two non-alcoholic drinks. I had the mushroom toast which was excellent. I later ordered a side of sourdough which was huge and may actually have been from the mains menu.

One last thing. If happen to forget your sex toy, don't despair: this hotel has you covered. We were shocked to see this selection on full display in the gift shop next to reception. In Australia, I'd be surprised if it's legal.

THC Stay with a Glitch

I am here currently on an Amex THC stay. Lovely property, wonderful area.

My big gripe is that I am here Sunday and Monday with the $100 US ($140 AU) food an beverage credit and the only restaurant is closed Sunday and Mondays. The roof top bar was open yesterday until 8pm but closed today.

Room service has three items available 7 days a week, two Toasties and a Cous Cous bowl, each under AU$20.

I am Globalist so breakfast already included.

Which leaves me to spend AU$140 on items from the gift store and the material makes it clean only food and beverage from the gift store counts. So the sex toys someone else mentioned are out ;)

I called the front desk and they admitted the restaurant being closed Mondays was a new development and they are working out an alternative for the credit but don't have one yet. Suggested I load up on wine.

I have reached out to Hyatt Concierge on Twitter and will reach out to Amex Travel once they open Monday morning in the states. I hate to be THAT American, but it's frustrating
