Waiver for 15 night cancellation window

Hi, I booked a SLH in Italy on points which has a 15 night cancellation window. I changed my plans and we're still over 3 nights away. Do I have any hope of getting my points back? I requested cancellation and I have only been told no or 'we sent them an email and will check.' I am a Hyatt Globalist and was hoping that would help.

You canceled at 3 nights instead of 15? Probably not, but properties occasionally refund anyway.

Sometimes they will let you reschedule , speak to the hotel front desk manager.

You will definitely get your points back. The question is whether they charge you rack rate for those nights.

Exactly. They'll refund your points and charge your credit card per the rate rules.

I've had success either changing dates inside the cancel period or (with good explanation) having properties waive cancel charges. YMMV.

You confirmation email should tell you exactly what the cancellation fee will be. You should get your points back.

This is something that’s best to call the hotel directly or the globalist line to call the hotel on your behalf. State you case, especially if it reasonable or an unforeseen event disrupting your travel plans. A human is on the other end of that line answering, and maybe even a really kind hearted understanding human.

Update (not that anyone cares). Hyatt said no, so I'm just going to modify my plans and go to the hotel so I dont waste 30K points or 1000 dollars on a hotel I'm not going to go to.

I am 90% sure if you call Globalist line you can get cancel with no point or money penalty

Could you maybe help me out? I have found others who have but it seems and according to Hyatt it's up to the hotel. I submitted multiple requests and all they have told me is no. I dont want to risk cancellation and throw 30k points in the trash and risk getting stuck with a 1k bill which they claim is the cancelation fee.

I called the Globalist line yesterday and they said no, but they can submit a request to the hotel. Today I got an official response.

"Unfortunately they will not be able to waive the cancellation penalty if the reservation is canceled"

We always care. Nothing worse than an OP who leaves us hanging.

It's up the property, unfortunately. Sometimes your Hyatt concierge can work a little magic, but if it's a small or greedy hotel and/or it doesn't believe it can resell the room on short notice, they're liable to decline.

Try not to let it sour your stay.

I am not Globalist and I canceled a French Riviera location 24 prior that had a 7 day cancel policy with no issues.

Thanks, I'm going to eat way more free breakfast than I normally would out of spite.

Ok, this is the Grand Hotel Cocumella in Sorrento Italy, which is a different property who apparently is more stingy.

It's entirely situational. That place might have really nice management — or it might have been overbooked, or had people willing to pay more than the person who canceled.

It's always that last 10 percent...

As noted above, it is entirely up to the kindness (or ruthlessness) of the property when trying to cancel after the cancellation window detailed in the reservation has closed.

From hyatt.com:

Reservations made through Hyatt directly can be changed or cancelled on hyatt.com or via the World of Hyatt app (subject to the cancellation policy disclosed during the booking process). Please note that changes to existing reservations will be subject to availability and any rate differences and may be subject to a new cancellation policy. Guests who booked via online travel agents or other third parties should contact their booking provider for information on their policies and for assistance.

World of Hyatt members: Subject to certain restrictions, reservations confirmed or changed by an Explorist, Globalist or Lifetime Globalist can be cancelled until 11:59 p.m. the day before arrival, when the hotel’s or resort’s cancellation period is not more than 48 hours prior to check-in. This 24-hour cancellation benefit does not apply: (i) to reservations at Hyatt Residence Club or Miraval resorts; (ii) where the rate is pre-paid and/or non-refundable; (iii) when the hotel’s or resort’s cancellation period is more than 48 hours; or (iv) for reservations booked at corporate negotiated or group contract rates. The cancellation windows are based on the hotel's time zone.

If it were a Hyatt property then the people insisting you can cancel would probably be right. You booked SLH, so yes it’s up to the hotel and no is generally the answer you’ll get.

rm76 Aug 18, 2022 9:03 am

Out of curiosity does the rate only refer to cancelations or does it mention changes as well? Wondering if you could change the reservation to a check in date that's say 15 to 20 days from now and then just cancel it.

HoustonConsultant Aug 18, 2022 11:27 am

I would echo that you should at least attempt to change the reservation to a date in the future, outside the cancellation window, and then cancel it then.

I've not needed to do this often, but it has always been successful. Obviously, it may not work at this particular hotel, but it is worth a shot.
