Thanks for the follow-up. Did not realize so involved. Ugh. Counting the days until they reopen. Weekend at The Shay, dinner at Vespertine

Agreed that Vespertine wouldn’t work in a hotel room.
While on that subject, don’t forget about Destroyer! Best breakfast and lunch around, and they’re on Caviar if you don’t want to eat there.

but it is difficult for us to decide what to do, since we usually spend 2-3 vacations a year in the US and now have been banned for 2 years…. We are eager to go again and catch up on all the things missed… but we‘ll do a roadtrip later on up US-1 to S.F.

Sorry - I didn't realize exactly where The Shay is. It's basically right at Platform. It's at Washington and National (an intersection I love for the pre-Reagan DCA days).
So you can walk to those places (Roberta's, Margot, Loqui, Boba Guys, Blue Bottle, and some other bakery in there, and maybe Pop's Bagels is there too?) but the downtown Culver City places are a bit closer.
This also means Father's Office, Lukshon, Pasta Sisters (are they still open? not great, in my book) and Destroyer are all walkable. There's also a good coffee shop on Helms just below National (not sure of their current status).
K-ZO is also decent mid-range sushi nearby, at the Trader Joe's.
I had this location as being closer to the Culver Hotel. In actuality, it's really right on the Expo light rail line.

The footprint is where the free parking lot was for the Culver City Expo Line. “They paved a parking lot to put up paradise.” (With my apologies to Joni Mitchell.). The proximity to the Expo line could not be better. And, you’re right off the 10 Freeway. If you want to drive, you can be at the beach in 15 minutes.

The hotel is on the right side. Has the darker window accents. The attached structure are the apartments. The HBO offices are on the left, sitting where the series of small buildings used to be in the first image.

Years ago I almost rented a building on that exact site. It had been a candle-making company, and it was directly across National from Surfas. Glad I didn't take it or I would have had to move again in a few short years.

The Shay, a Destination by Hyatt hotel, Debuts in Los Angeles
The 148-room boutique hotel and destination for creative collaboration, unique meetings, and events anchors Culver City's highly anticipated Ivy Station development
CHICAGO – October 6, 2021 – Hyatt Hotels Corporation (NYSE: H) announced today the opening of The Shay, a Destination by Hyatt hotel and the brand’s first urban hotel in Southern California, in the vibrant Culver City district of Los Angeles. The destination-defining property is a central hub for creative camaraderie. Features include loft-like accommodations with luxurious amenities, a sprawling campus with inspiring indoor-outdoor spaces to connect and collaborate during meetings, weddings and events, and an array of community partners that seamlessly blend both guests’ and locals’ experiences.
Thoughtful Design in the Heart of Culver City
“The Shay is the first hotel in Culver City to celebrate the area’s growing creative community while fully embracing its rich history,” says Ryan Parker, general manager of The Shay. “As an anchor to the Arts District, which encompasses art galleries, coffee bars, trending fitness studios and the re-imagined landmark Helms Bakery building with design boutiques and specialty restaurants, The Shay offers guests a distinct sense of place that honors old and new.”
Adjacent to the Culver City Metro E Line, The Shay offers convenient access to experience all Los Angeles has to offer, from the boardroom to the beach and everything in between. After a productive day exploring the neighborhood or connecting with colleagues, guests find respite in 148 contemporary rooms and suites designed for comfort. All accommodations feature oversized windows, workstations, curated artwork and modern décor that mirror the city’s resourceful spirit. Select suites offer luxuries like wet bars, patios, large soaking tubs, generous living spaces and separate work areas.
Those adding local flair to the hotel’s experience include boutique design agency Studio Collective, whose award-winning portfolio includes downtown LA’s Hotel Figueroa, which is part of The Unbound Collection by Hyatt brand; Culver City-based functional fitness studio Essers; LA-born craft grooming product company Imperial Barber; specialty spa brand milk + honey; and Culver City Art District’s ROSIES Foundation, a non-profit organization that sources employment for those with disabilities.
Distinctive Food & Beverage Offerings
The Shay plays host to two onsite culinary concepts by Michelin-starred chef Danny Grant’s What If Syndicate group, including etta, a wood-fired eatery with indoor-outdoor seating on the ground floor, and Celestina, a high-energy Mexican-inspired restaurant and cocktail bar on the roof deck. What If Syndicate also produces the culinary experiences for meetings, weddings and events.
The Shay boasts Culver City’s first curated rooftop pool experience, offering pop-up events including music shows, comedy sets and yoga classes; a versatile outdoor courtyard that leads into a modern ballroom; and an inviting lobby space featuring a cocktail bar and game room outfitted with eclectic seating and contemporary local art.
Expansive Meetings & Events Spaces
The arrival of companies like Amazon Studios, Apple TV and WarnerMedia to Ivy Station are energizing Culver City more than a century after Thomas Ince built the city’s first film studio where Sony Pictures stands today. The Shay is a co-catalyst for the historic neighborhood’s re-emergence as a destination for creative collaboration with 8,000 square feet of versatile indoor-outdoor event space that takes advantage of Southern California’s year-round idyllic weather. Meeting options include a modern boardroom that opens out into a courtyard with a gazebo and fireplace; a contemporary ballroom that connects to multiple pre-function spaces; and sleek breakout rooms.
Each meeting space nods to the destination with Culver City-inspired names like the Ivy Ballroom, Helms and Hayden Meeting Rooms and Blackwelder Boardroom. “We took a charismatic approach to meeting spaces that brings the spirit of Culver City to the experience,” says Parker. “There’s nothing boring about our boardroom!”
Special Offers
In celebration of its opening, The Shay is offering 50% off all suites and 15% off all standard room rates through the end of the year, and a Bed & Breakfast promotion that includes a full American breakfast for two and late 2:00 pm checkout. I had dinner at Etta opening weekend (of the restaurant) and it was delicious but the service was all over the place. I chalked it up to opening but I would definitely go back. It’s a huge space that seems to be one of the biggest restaurants to open in the area. Everything is woodfired. Located on street level (not rooftop). Straddling the line between high end Italian and neighborhood Italian. Prices were pretty good for LA—pizzas $20 and entrees in mid/high $20s.
