How is this actually going to work?

It's unclear to me how this is actually going to work. Here's what I mean:

Existing cardholders already have a running counter of spend. As an illustrative example, let's pretend mine is currently at $13,000.
  • Scenario 1: I spend an additional $8000 during the promo period and cross the next 5k marks at 15k and 20k. I receive 6 nights for my 8k in spend during the promo period. I'm now at 21k at the end of the promo period and when I spend the next 4k, I'll get the standard 2 nights.
  • Scenario 2: I spend the same $8000 during the promo. The spend is treated separately from my running counter and I receive 3 nights for 5k in spend. At the end of the promo period, the remaining 3k gets added back to the standard "running" counter
I assume that scenario 1 is how things will work because scenario 2 would be extremely confusing and difficult to track. If scenario 1 is under effect, then those who happen to be close to the next 5k mark will benefit the most from this promo

Maybe this coronavirus thing will blow over in a few months time. Or maybe we'll still be sitting at home in late 2021 - not necessarily on lockdown, but certainly not welcome in many countries without a vaccination certificate - and wondering what was the point of earning 10k more Hyatt points that we can't spend on anything...

I'm already shaving my own estimates of the worth of miles, not only because I can't use them today or tomorrow, but because when/if travel resumes cash fares will be ridiculously low. I wouldn't be surprised if hotels at <50% occupancy weren't also at silly cheap prices that will make spending points feel like a waste...
Yes for sure my short to medium term valuation of points (or miles) is lower at this point in time. When the economy was booming I could sometimes redeem Hyatt points at more than 2.0 cpp. When international travel resumes I think a more realistic estimate is probably 1.5 cpp if not lower, because there will be lots of deals to be found.

Regarding sitting "at home" until late 2021, well this is a bit off topic but as of now we are still "homeless" like you were in your previous life of permanent traveller so our points will find a place to be spent sooner rather than later. For most people I agree it will require a bit more patience to extract that 1.5 cpp "value", but such folks can always move up hotel categories if they have too many points, ie book a Park Hyatt rather than a Hyatt Regency = just spoil yourself more than you would have otherwise...

I think different people's valuation of Hyatt points will probably be more divergent in 2020 than they were in 2019, and will be more dependent on individual travel profiles. Heck for some people the value of points might start to approach zero if they no longer want to travel....

As a current Globalist, I might be willing to put a lot of my 1x spend on the WOH card during the promo, but only after I know for sure what incentives they are giving for us to go for 60 nights in 2020.

I just had a big $$ Lindblad cruise cancel and one of the options is to take a credit to my WOH Visa.

I know Hyatt will take back the points (earned at 4 x) but does anyone have experience with Chase clawing back the elite nights.

Since I only earned 2 per $5k I am concerned with them clawing back 3 per $5k.

Any thoughts?

I had a decent size refund that pushed me back under one of my $5K milestones last year, and they didn't claw the nights back when that statement closed. I did have to catch back up on spending though to get the next batch of 2 nights. But perhaps they will claw them back if it's a larger amount or if a person never catches up in spending.

I'm wondering the same. I'm not seeing this promotion advertised officially through Chase or Hyatt. Anyone have the actual email they can post?

More points would have been more an incentive.
Already Globalist. Not sure I need more certificates right now as travel has halted.

It's partially on the Chase site. Says it in one place, but then you click on the terms and it says five nights.

Sounds like Chase is limping through the site edits.

If only those people who value their points at less than 1 cpp or no longer want to travel could sell them to others

I guess they could still make reservations for family.

I wonder exactly what the sentence I have underlined means.

They get to claw it back based on whatever criteria they like with no details upfront?

Are they talking about MS?

Not really, IIRC that term is in every co-branded Card Chase has (if not all Chase cards), not just this offer. It’s definitely been on the WOH Card since it launched. Spending money through your credit card makes Chase and Hyatt money, it’s profitable for them to allow MS, if it wasn’t they wouldn’t. It’s been going on for over a decade. Actually everyone gets paid off of MS from the bank issuing the credit card, Simon Mall (who sells the cards to MS with), Walmart and the consumer.

They’re more or less talking about gambling, and wager-like purchases. Some restaurants for example will charge $2,000 to your card and give you chips to a back room game. Some liquor stores and gas stations will let you charge Lottery tickets and scratch offs to your credit card for a fee. This is not allowed by credit issuers and if they see a $500 or $1,000 charge from a gas station they can use that clause to retract points.

At least I asked a branch manager last year and that’s how they explained it to me. He said Chase is okay with MS, “it’s profitable for us as a bank” were his exact words.

I think they want to minimize any chance of someone MSing their game to globalist.

I think I'm going to sit this one out as a current globalist unless they adjust the qualifying thresholds or add in some rollover feature. I was on track to requalify with roughly 25 nights prior to the shut down and still have 3 TSUs left. I may put some spend on the card to make sure I reach the 30 night level and get the additional Cat 1-4 night, but I don't see much value in this for a globalist beyond that.
