Fee for late checkout?

Is a property allowed to charge an Explorist/Globalist a fee for 2PM/4pm checkout?
We were quoted a fee for late checkout recently. It seemed to me that if they are willing to accept payment for a late checkout, then the late checkout should be available for free with status. So my husband went back to the front desk to push back on it, and the late checkout was granted without charge. But it surprised me that he even had to go to that trouble.

Which hotel was attempting to charge you?

No that is a blatant rules violation (assuming not an exempt property).

Please name.

This is the kind of situation that has me emailing Hyatt and usually ending up with some compensation. (and a behind the scenes kicking for the hotel I imagine)

I believe late check out should be either granted or not granted at all due to availability but cannot be sold like this to elite members.

On a side note, I realize that the language on late check out has changed a little. Maybe the change occurred months ago or years ago and I missed it, but I clearly remember it was offered at the check-in by front desk NOT "upon request" on "day of departure". How long has this been in effect???

(e) 4:00 PM Late Checkout: Upon request, Globalists will receive a 4:00 PM late checkout (local hotel time) on day of their departure at Hyatt hotels, provided that (a) late checkout is subject to availability at hotels with a casino, and Hyatt resorts; and (b) late checkout is not offered at Hyatt Residence Club resorts or M life Rewards destinations. (PLEASE NOTE: The distinction between a Hyatt resort and a Hyatt hotel may not always be obvious and Members are encouraged to call Hyatt’s central reservation service for help determining a hotel’s or resort’s designation. Please visit hyatt.com for contact information.)

The "upon request" language has been in there a while (definitely the entire time World of Hyatt has been around, and I think longer).

You're reading "day of departure" as modifying the request, but that's not a normal/natural reading. The rule is saying that you get 4 p.m. checkout on the day of your departure. Obviously that's a little redundant (you wouldn't check out any other day) but it's not saying you have to request the day of. (To be fair, it's not saying you are entitled to request at check-in either.)

It’s always been upon request, hasn’t it? And I read the “on the day of departure” as a redundancy, not as “upon request on day of departure.”

My bad. I misinterpreted it as "request on the day of departure".

Still, I had no knowledge of this change at all.
I am very certain that at one point, it was supposed to be automatically offered at check-in without asking.
Maybe it was those Diamond days before WOH era.
Clearly remember filling numerous online surveys asking if I was offered welcome amenities and late check-out among other things at check in.
Welcome amenities are already an obsolete Diamond terminology. Ba

The key words are "will receive." That's mandatory language. Everything else in that sentence is superfluous.

That's a good point, Kacee.
Gosh, maybe I had this all wrong the whole time.
So unless the property is specifically in Hyatt's exclusion list(resort vs hotel shenanigans), they MUST grant it regardless of occupancy, etc.

Is this how we are supposed to interpret the T&C?

As a Globalist I can't remember the last time I wasn't asked at check-in if I wanted late check-out.

And when/if they don't, I usually say something like "I'll be needing my 4pm late checkout tomorrow".

Agreed. And never been denied or been given much pushback. It's one (of the many) thing(s) Hyatt gets right.
