I thought this was going to be a Four Seasons?

Looks wonderful. That's a solid addition to the European footprint!

Thank you for the news.

A partial reopening is set to take place between July and October 2019, and final renovations are scheduled to be complete for a full reopening in June 2020.

Hyatt is featuring this hotel on their home screen and it is gorgeous! I've never heard about this hotel and it's fascinating and makes me want to go there. Unfortunately it appears to be closed until May and not allowing bookings at all.

Just back from 4 nights at the Hotel du Palais and since reviews are scarce here, I thought I'd add one. My room was booked as deluxe and upgraded to ocean view.

The hotel re-reopened in early May (as in it reopened in March, then closed again, then "re-reopened" in May!) after a mixture of refurbishment and covid effects. There are both things to love and things not to love about the place.

The great

Let me start with the great. This is a unique hotel and a little piece of history in its own right. It was originally built as a gift from Napoleaon III to his wife Eugenie in the second half of the 19th century in beautiful Biarritz. The Basque country is lovely, Biarritz is pretty and small enough to be very easy to navigate, and the location of the hotel is about as ideal as it gets, standing in between the two cities' main surfing beaches (Grande Plage and Plage du Miramar), bang in the heart of the town's main waterfront with gorgeous views of the ocean.

The building is truly impressive and the grounds are very nice. The common areas are beautiful, including a gorgeous main restaurant and a beautiful terrace with beach views, which doubles as a more informal restaurant (not sure if it is open in the winter). There is also a lovely heated sea water swimming pool (28 degrees, 33 metres long and with gorgeous views).

The good

I found the food to be good and sometimes very good though expensive. Breakfast was included in my rate thankfully (as it is €50 per person otherwise!). It is nice though perhaps not amongst the best hotel breakfasts I have seen. Breads and pastries are homemade and nice, there is a changing selection of cut fruit, fresh squeezed juices, and a slightly repetitive selection of cold cuts, dairy products and hot dishes. Coffees and teas are good.

I have also tried food from the semi-informal terrace restaurant (not quite informal!) and room service. Both were effectively the same menu (plus tapas at the restaurant) and good but expensive. I did not try the formal restaurant for lunch or dinner as it was more tempting to eat outdoors or in the room.

Service was good but not stellar. There is plenty of staff around and most of them are lovely. At the same time, there were a few minor hiccups too. No shower mats when I first arrived so I had to use an actual towel, turndown service missed one evening (though they came after I called), one concierge gave me wrong information on a fairly simple question (though when I went back, his colleague went out of his way to rectify it), order mistakes at breakfast one day, no butter another, very slow a third, super fast a fourth with everything arriving at once, small plumbing problem in my original room, etc. I also ordered room service twice. Once was very fast and delivered in about 15 minutes but the charge was a lot more than on the menu for some reason (I only noticed on the final bill). The second time was charged as shown but took nearly 1 hour to arrive. None of it is major, none of it was an issue to me or prevented me from enjoying my stay, and all of it was fixed one was or another after I asked, but when compared to some places where everything just runs super smoothly, and given the price point, perfect it was not.

As is the case with most Grande Dame hotels, all rooms are different. They are generally comfortable and well appointed and the recent refurbishment is obvious in the clean/new feel of the cream and light grey interiors. Room size can vary very significantly, including within category, and people used to more modern hotels will probably find some of them a little bit on the small side (i'll admit that I am a bit surprised by the measurements stated on the website, some of the rooms I have seen certainly look smaller to me). Also note that because of the nature of the building, bar a couple of exceptions (presumably some suites), there are no real balconies/terraces in the rooms, at most some little standing French balconies so if your plan is to enjoy a nice drink on your terrace, you are probably better off at the Sofitel next door (less luxurious but more modern and with big terraces).

Amenities are replenished regularly (Guerlain Eau Imperiale range), bathrobes and slippers are nice, kettle and nespresso machine in rooms (four pods a day, additional refills have to be ordered and paid for from room service).

The not so good

I am personally not entirely convinced by the refurbishment. I am particularly underwhelmed by the bathrooms which I found poor for a hotel of that standing. First, it is worth noting that many rooms have shower only (I like baths, sorry!) and not even particularly fancy showers (decent but not great). They are also typically quite small and blind (though some rooms also have bathrooms with windows which are nice, but that usually results in a smaller room otherwise). I also found the refurbished decor feeling quite poor. It uses ceramic tiles looking like fake-marble (seriously?) have single sinks, and quite frankly do not feel like luxurious bathrooms at all.

Overall

I really enjoyed my stay and am glad that I experienced the Hotel du Palais and soaked its unique atmosphere. I also really enjoyed the breakfasts at the gorgeous Rotonde, the ideal location, the views, and the very relaxing swimming pool, and several staff members were absolutely lovely. At the same time, given the Palace standing and the price point, I'll admit that there were a few more hiccups/imperfections than I expected. I'm also not entirely convinced by the refurbishment and in particular feel that the hotel did a really poor job with the bathrooms which are simply not what you would expect in a 5* hotel. Maybe the hotel is slowly getting "back in the mood" after more than a year of covid disruptions or maybe it is more to be enjoyed for the experience than for the luxury. I certainly did not regret my stay at all, but I can imagine that a few people would feel a bit more impatient than me at some of the things that did not work as well as they could have.

Thank you for this great review.

You mention that you had a rate with breakfast included. Are you not a Globalist? Or is it that the hotel doesn't give free breakfast to Globalist?

Thanks

Thanks for the kind words! I'm not Globalist so no idea if the hotel offers free breakfast to them, but in any case I was on a Hyatt Prive rate which includes breakfast and a few more perks.

Fantastic stay at Hotel du Palais

Stayed there 2 nights as a globalist. Booked the cheapest room in a promotion (about 300 EUR/n) and used a Hyatt suite upgrade to confirm a junior suite. Upon check-in, which was spectacular with Mr. Semen escorting us through the facilities and to the room, we were informed of a further upgrade to the Sarah Bernhardt suite, which has access to a huge beachfront terrace. A bottle of wine was waiting in the room, along with some fruits. Later we found some vouchers for a bottle of champagne (Henessy I think) and a plate of charcuterie, near the manager's welcome letter.

The hotel was recently renovated and looks great. The suite was beautiful, the Guerlain amenities incredible, the gym, outdoor saltwater pool and indoor pool are all well maintained and really enjoyable, every equipment at the fitness was immediately sanitized after use. Breakfast was complimentary for globalist and served either in the suite, on our terrace or at the restaurant. Upon checkout we were showered with additional gifts, souvenirs from the hotel, nothing could have been better.

On-site valet parking costs 30 EUR/day, hotel has direct beach access and a walk to the "Rocher de la Vierge" is highly recommended if the weather permits. A very welcome addition to the Unbound collection and one of the world's great palaces, which hosted the G7 meeting in 2019. Will definitely return when the opportunity arises.

That's the biggest terrace I've ever seen. It's bigger than our apartment!

Was it closed and reopened just now?

The hotel just posted a lovely reopening video on their Linkedin.

Great review! You went in the fall? How did you find it outside of the prime summer months?

Any recent stays? Trying to decide if it's worth ~$500/night for a few night stay in late October. I'm worried it'll be too cold to take advantage of many of the hotel's perks...but hopefully I'm wrong?
