Split Rate Types and Suite Upgrades
 

I just tried to switch a Globalist free night to a higher category hotel (to save me 8,000 points) so the reservation would be points for 6 nights and a Globalist free night for 1 night. It already had a suite upgrade applied. I was told that once I switch rate types (i.e, have multiple rate types) that it does not allow the suite upgrade...technically it would require 2 suite upgrades instead of one. I got nervous and told them to keep it like it is.

Has anyone heard this? The reservation that I was moving it from had a suite upgrade as well with the split reservation (same confirmation)...but, it does not look like they took my upgrade out of my account. I wonder if the hotel did the upgrade outside the main system...I did receive an email from the local hotel saying I had been upgraded. Does anyone know how this works?

I had a stay earlier this month where I had a single TSU applied onto a mix of points nights and a Hyatt CC Cat 4 free night. No problem.

Pretty sure in HGP days, I had daily rate mixed with C+P rate for single DSU too. Probably HUCA or WOH twitter team.

It has been reported before that if you combine eligible rates and non-eligible rate for a stay that you cannot use a TSU.... dumb rule, but you are not the first.

I was told specifically by my Hyatt concierge when trying to do something similar that the suite upgrades can only be used on point award stays, not the Cat free nights which would mean you couldn't even do this burning 2 upgrades. You could always split the free night stay off as it's own reservation and then contact the property/wait until check in to see if they would let you stay in the same room (suite).

IME, when you use a Globalist free night award, the ENTIRE stay becomes ineligible for a suite upgrade. It's a stupid rule, but it's still a rule.

So I tell them to book the "persona-non-grata" award (i.e. the Globalist award which only the top customers get) as a separate reservation, and to keep the suite upgrade in place for the other (paid) nights.

Sometimes they say that they're not "allowed" to do that. It's almost like, "if you have the nerve to try to use a Globalist Award, which only the Tippity-Top Tier can get, this makes you ineligible for a suite upgrade for the rest of your life". Well, it's not actually THAT bad, but really and truly, you already have a reservation in place. You decide to add an award night to the end of the existing reservation. This depreciates the ENTIRE reservation? Weeird.

Anyway, whenever I get to the hotel, I am fully prepared to enjoy my paid stay in the suite, and then to move to their crummiest room for the one-night stay which was paid with the "award We Wish You Wouldn't Use".

So far, I've been "allowed" to stay in the suite for the entire duration, even though this is "against" the "rules".

Rules are Rules. Rules are also sometimes silly. Fortunately, the Front Desk at most Hyatt Properties have a lot more sense than the corporate rule-makers. Your Mileage May Vary.

I had a 3-night stay earlier this year that was 2-nights full points and 1-night Globalist free night award. They did the suite upgrade on the first 2 nights and contacted the hotel to block me in the suite for the last night.

Thanks for everyone's comments. I think I understand it now - even thought points stays are eligible for a suite upgrade, the globalist free night awards are not. i.e., this is why it becomes an ineligible rate.
