Your question makes no sense.

If there are no standard suites available to be offered how could you apply a TSU? A Suite can’t magically appear. If it were available to have a TSU applied then you’d receive it as an upgrade at check in.

So you're saying a Globalist is entitled to an upgrade to a standard suite if there's an unoccupied one available ? The hotels have no discretion to deny the elite suite upgrade to keep them for potential last minute revenue bookings or to manage the "perceived value" of the suites ?

Yes, it’s their discretion to hold them until a Globalist checks in, rather than pre-upgrade Globalists. Once a Globalist is actually checking in they must relinquish the Standard Suite if available. Which is why your question makes no sense.

Sadly, the member's question does make sense because of the games we know some properties play with delivering elite benefits. Some hotels are very reluctant to deliver on this benefit.

Yes, you are entitled to a standard suite at check-in if available for the duration of your stay. However, as noted, don't be surprised if the hotel spins you a line that the suite that's showing as available on the website isn't actually available and they strangely can't explain the discrepancy. Or you're told that you've already been upgraded to the best available room. Or that the hotel is entitled to hold back some rooms in the event of last minute reservations ... All are unacceptable responses.

If you get a line like this, I'd suggest either phoning the concierge line or phoning global reservations and seeing if it's possible to reserve the entry level suite. When you're told it is, pass the phone to the belligerent hotel clerk.

In that situation applying a TSU wouldn’t make sense. The point of using a TSU is to reserve a Suite ahead to guarantee its available during your stay, rather than the day of in which case if one is available you’d receive one. Whether it’s done by the hotel, by your request, or by phoning your Concierge or Globalist Concierge. Using a TSU at the point of check in would be a complete waste.

I’ve definitely had it where I booked a stay along with a Guest of Honor stay for my Father for his birthday, a suite showed available and they said it was a glitch. I even asked a manager who said it was a Glitch, but for the inconvenience they sent my Father a bottle of Champagne for his birthday. Not the best outcome, but not the worst either. We thanked the manager for doing what he could and held nothing against him.

I agree the point of using a TSU is to secure a suite in advance. However, Hoipolloi was referring to situations where hotels deny delivering the suite upgrade benefit:

[My emphasis]

It's no different from a hotel saying 'Sorry, we have no Club rooms available for upgrade. But we can sell you one for €80 extra per night. Shall I charge you credit card now?'

I completely understand what they were saying, but asking to apply a TSU would be no different than requesting a complimentary upgrade if you are doing so at check in. That’s what I am saying.

Also, what you says makes no sense. Saying that the hotel is claiming no Club Rooms are available, but you can buy one for $80. I get the jist, but they can’t sell something that’s not available. If they claim it’s available for a fee that’s what I like to call an “A Ha Moment”. Where they’ve shown their hand in which case if it is available, and they now must supply it if you have that benefit.

club rooms at some properties are just rooms with access... does globalist get automatic club rooms or just club access?

as for upgrades, can hyatt apply a tsu at the time of checkin?

I think hotels may get some kind of compensation from corporate if an instrument is used, as opposed to granting the benefit as published.

As for making no sense, it's not uncommon for hotels to deny upgraded rooms for various illegitimate reasons while also attempting to sell them for cash. I wouldn't say it's a regular occurrence and some hotels are worse than others, but it does happen.

I’m not saying it doesn’t happen, but when it does you have several methods of resolution.

1) Show Agent Hyatt App showing availability, if that does not work ask for a manager.

2) Reach out to your Concierge

3) Reach out to Hyatt Globalist Concierge

All of these are effective methods. If they are claiming the room is unavailable what are you going to say?

“Will it become available if I apply a Suite Upgrade Award or pay more?”

If they said Yes, then they would be violating Hyatt’s agreement with them and the T&C. That’s what I am getting at. Is that they cannot possibly offer a Standard Suite to a Globalist at an upsell at check in whether using cash, points, or a TSU.

To play devil's advocate: What if I don't want to deal with this headache at check-in? Not everyone wants to argue with the front desk who's already acting in bad faith, then having to call concierge/woh, or escalating the issue to a manager. Most of times I just want a suite waiting for me and a smooth check-in process.

Also what if after all the escalation the hotel still chooses to violate woh t&c and denying your suite upgrade when one is available? What are you recourses?

Ignoring all the other discussion for a minute, it's my understanding a front desk agent is unable to apply points or other awards from your account. I suppose it could be done by getting a WoH agent or your MHC on the phone and having them apply the award when you're checking in.

Go over their head and force an upgrade by calling Hyatt customer service and applying a TSU ?

IMHO that situation would create a hostile stay environment.

Going to check in, the agent saying no Suites are available, you asking them to put checking in on pause, going off to call Hyatt and applying a TSU then coming back saying you’ve just added a Suite Upgrade Award to get a Suite you were already explicitly entitled to, but were told was unavailable. That literally means you’re proving the agent was in fact lying to you, and I feel like that would create a hostile stay experience at the property. Much more than if you called your Concierge and had them contact the hotel to get the Suite.

That’s just my two cents.

Quick newbie question (aiming to get to Globalist in 2021) - how do you determine when a standard suite is available for applying a TSU? Is it only when you see Standard Suite availability for a points booking, or is it when any Standard Suite is available for regular cash rates? I'm looking at several Hawaii resorts (HR Maui, GH Kauai) where Standard Suites show sparse availability for booking directly with points (at 40k/night), but they are available to book with cash for most of the dates I'm looking at. Thanks!
