I suggested the Presidential Suite would be fine but was told that she cannot upgrade me to that. I suggested I use a Suite Upgrade voucher and asked her to double check with management but she cautioned that as the Ambassador suite costs more than JPY500,000 a night it was unlikely. The management subsequently refused.

Separately, I was told breakfast at the main restaurant (The French Kitchen) is chargeable for Globalists (4900 JPY).
The GH TYO is a very 'by the book' hotel that even wants to charge you for guests in the Grand Club so make sure you always reserve for the max amount of guests allowed.

As far as suite availability and breakfast goes, the hotel doesn't have many Standard Suites and being upgraded in Tokyo to a top of the line Presidential Suite for free is almost unheard of unless you're a frequent customer at that hotel (I've gotten some awesome suites at the PHT before). That being said, simply ask for the Best Room Available as per the WOH Rules. The Club Corner Deluxe rooms or whatever they are called are huge and perfectly fine IMHO.

Breakfast is always at the Club and not at the restaurant as long as there is one and the Grand Club in Tokyo is pretty good (and large). Yes some properties give you the choice of Club or Restaurant but that's mostly to ease the flow of guests at smaller club locations. We can't really expect it to be the standard at all properties. I've never been refused though if it's a special occasion or if there were real drawbacks of the breakfast at the Club Lounge.

Had my first experience with Hyatt's innovative "Thank You For Being An Idiot" policy. I booked a week at a fancy hotel for May 6 thru 11, 2018. I wanted to use a TSU.

No Can Do.

Here's why: I qualified back in April. Therefore my TSU's expire on April 8.

To add insult to injury, I actually qualified AGAIN, i.e. in 2017 I stayed at Hyatt another 55 nights AFTER I already stayed 60 nights. But it makes no difference. The bottom line is that I'm an Idiot for qualifying too early. My Suite Upgrades all expire on April 8. Meanwhile, people who stay at Hyatt HALF as much as I do, and who qualified later in the year, have suite upgrades for the entire year (up until the month/day in 2018 when they qualified in 2017).

New rules of the game: The faster you qualify, the longer you must go without suite upgrades.

if you have a total of 115 nights then you should have gotten the option to receive another 4 TSUs with later expiration (1 year from when you received them)

Everybody's TSU's expire 1 year after issue. I don't see what the problem is.

You are correct: you get to choose an extra award at 70, 80, 90 and 100 nights. I chose the 10K points instead of the TSU.

In the old Gold Passport program, suite upgrades expired at the end of the status year. Those who qualified in 2017 would have 4 TSU's which expire in February 2019 (when the status expires). Under the new program, the TSUs expire in one year. Therefore, someone who qualified in April 2017 has no TSUs after April 2018. The faster you qualify, the sooner you become ineligible for upgrades.

Well you're correct about one thing, your an idiot.

So you took the cheap payout in points (4 times in fact!), and now you're complaining that you do not have a TSU? It was all your choice, but you want to blame someone, anyone, else? Idiot is putting it mildly.

People clamored to get their TSUs issued at requalification so as to avoid the rush to apply on Mar 1. That is exactly what happened. While I do not consider a 1 year validity to be overly generous, nor do I consider it to be overly stingy.

the issue for Hyatt should be the incentive for a 60 to 69 night a year Globalist to book away from Hyatt near the end of the year solely to get some extra validity on the TSUs at the end of the following year - Hyatt should care about this lost revenue

that being said, Hyatt and World of Hyatt are orders of magnitude better than the competition, so I'll simply adjust.

And now you're surprised??? This "feature" has been discussed at length in this forum and the blogs. Not sure how any regular here could not be aware of the issue.

Actually, I relied on the fact that Globalist is supposed to get a suite if it's available, even without the TSU. And a TSU only works when a suite is available. So, why take the extra TSUs, when a Globalist gets a suite anyway (if it's available)? Did you opt for a TSU when you're gonna get a suite anyway (if it's available)? If so, then you're an idiot

Guess what? I exercised the "Un-Idiot" option. I asked my concierge to please reverse my earlier decision (10K points) and choose a TSU instead. I gotta tell ya, there are times when having status just totally rocks.

A Terrific upgrade to Park Hyatt Shanghai Diplomatic Suite on C&P reservation (no certificate used) for this Globalist. Our Son and I had booked a standard twin bed room for our short stay in Shanghai. Wow, what a stay - twin King size beds. This and the Presidential Suite at GH New York are likely the highest value upgrades we have received. Georgetown Suite at Park Hyatt Washington is a memorable upgrade without using a certificate. We have been very fortunate in our years as Diamond and now Globalist customers at Hyatt.
