Hi guys -

I know this one's a long way off but after nearly three decades of having left the Kuwaiti market, Hyatt is FINALLY returning with a Grand Hyatt in 2020.

Hyatt originally managed a beachfront hotel in the Al-Bida'a area of Kuwait in the 1980s called the Hyatt Regency Kuwait. It left Hyatt and rebranded before the Iraqi Invasion of 1990 as an independent hotel called Kuwait Regency Palace, which was then burned down and all but destroyed during the Invasion itself. It sat derelict until the early 2000s when the owning family decided to turn it around and rebuilt a beautiful new place called - originally enough - The Regency. I always wondered why Hyatt never had Kuwait on their regional expansion radars throughout the years as it seemed like a prime spot for any number of its brands.

Looks like the hotel forces that be have finally listened: one of Kuwait's premier malls is currently undergoing a massive expansion project that will see new shops, restaurants and cafs added to it in addition to a series of tennis stadiums, courts and clubhouse facilities as part of Kuwait's new tennis headquarters. The country aims to attract international sports teams and events and as someone very well acquainted with the company that owns 360 Mall and a variety of other projects in Kuwait, I can attest to the incredible quality that the Grand Hyatt will be built to.

Grand Hyatt Kuwait will add to the brands growing presence in the Gulf region

CHICAGO (November 9, 2015) Hyatt Hotels Corporation (NYSE: H) today announced that a Hyatt affiliate has entered into a contract with Tamdeen Group to develop a 261-room Grand Hyatt hotel in Kuwait. Expected to open in 2020, the newly built hotel will be an integral part of 360 MALL, an iconic premier luxury shopping destination that integrates retail, leisure and entertainment under one roof. Grand Hyatt Kuwait will mark the fifth Grand Hyatt hotel in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), after the opening of Grand Hyatt Abu Dhabi in 2016.

Located seven miles from downtown on 6th Ring road, Grand Hyatt Kuwait will be within close reach of various embassies, a number of government ministries and the Kuwait International Airport. Grand Hyatt Kuwait will offer standard rooms of 130 square feet (40 square meters), four food and beverage outlets where guests can enjoy inventive cuisine, and first class meeting and events facilities that will cater to government, business and social events in the city.

Grand Hyatt Kuwait will be designed by RTKL Architects, who also designed the existing 360 Mall. As with all Grand Hyatt hotels, this new development will offer guests a sophisticated environment, based on innovative design and architecture complementing Kuwaits unique culture.

I remember they burned the Sheraton (I was down at Shwaibah) but not this one.

Do you remember where the residential districts of Salwa and Rumaithiya are? The current Regency is located on the seaside just north of Salwa and across from Rumaithiya. It's essentially a major gutting and reconstruction of the bones of the old Hyatt/Regency Palace.

Back to the new Grand Hyatt though: the site is located in Al Zahra, an upscale residential district within five minutes of Kuwait International Airport and just down a highway from downtown Kuwait. The location is quiet but convenient; 360 is a posh mall with the likes of Cartier, Saint Laurent and Gucci occupying prime space with a Bloomingdale's coming next year. I live right behind the construction site so I'll keep a keen eye on the development.

Great news, however; I expect nothing less than the best quality from the developers.

sorry but on 02 Aug I was sleeping off sight near Shwaibah doing a general update of the refinery when I got a call at 0430 which told me to "grab your passport and head south" (no explanation) which I did - the KSA border was open and we "hid out" in Jubail (which I knew from an earlier Contract).

Returned afterwards to rebuild Shwaibah, Ahmedy and Abdullah under KNPC-RRP where we first had to find the booby traps left by the former occupiers before we could repair the damaged refineries (I wrote the Contracts) that had been hit to stop the oil flowing into the Gulf (that plus emergency shutdowns had internally damaged the refinery opererations).

Anyhow, wound up living at the Intercon on Ring Road 6 down from the stadium where the Iraqi tanks were towed in from Jarra Road but don't recall much else as I was working 14-hour days, 7-days a week for 14-months writing the reconstruction contracts.

I do recall the area where 3 massive residences were built along the Cornish along with the twin towers that had like other places been shot up and Salwa does ring a bell, but memories failing at my "old age"

When running a Google search for this property, the property link appears as a choice on the first page but routes to a "We're sorry" page indicating the page may be removed or the link broken. Speaking to a property rep, it should be live at the end of the month.

Opening has been delayed to the end of this year due to Kuwait's nonsensical COVID-related restrictions impeding the hotel from hiring people.

This will far and away be Kuwait's most beautiful hotel from a design perspective.

The hotel is bookable, but opening night rates are OUTRAGEOUS: something around 190+ KWD for a standard room. Thats over 650 dollars!

I looked at rates into January 2023 to see if anything shifts, but the rates are holding. I dont know if this is just temporary, but theyre completely delusional if they think they can charge those rates given their location and the fact that this is Kuwait - no matter how beautiful the hotel is.

I went for a tour of the property last week, and let me just say: holy - this has to be the finest Grand Hyatt in the world from a hard product perspective, the owners have spared NO expense in making this property a stunner. The public spaces are absolutely beautiful, the rooms are airy with light tones, high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling/wall-to-wall windows, the restaurants are each stunning in their own right [the Chinese restaurant, Mei Li, is a particular show-stopper], the spa is decked in wood and wonderfully rendered, the meeting spaces are lovely... you get the image. The views over the highway, mall and surrounding scrubby desert aren't inspiring in the least, but at least the rooms are flooded with light and are gorgeous havens to be in.

Some additional notes:
  • There is a direct connection to the expansion building of the 360 Mall, which also includes the Rafa Nadal Tennis Academy and a 5000-capacity multipurpose arena
  • Every room has a walk-in wardrobe and freestanding tub, including the entry-level rooms
  • Restaurants include Turkish [this will function as the all-day dining venue], Chinese, a French-style brasserie directly connected to the mall and the lobby lounge
  • The indoor pool is part of the spa, and will 99.9 percent NOT be available for children to use
  • Target demographic is GCC weekenders and corporate guests

Currently accepting reservations from September 1st this year, but the plan is to move it up to August 15th.
