If they consummate this one.. Where would it put Hyatt in footprint? I would assume still third behind Marriott and Hilton.

As a hotel customer, I'm cheering for Hyatt to acquire Starwood. Marriott and Hilton would still have more properties, but that is not a reason one way or another for an acquisition to make sense from a financial/investor perspective.

By what measure? By number of hotels, by number of hotel rooms, or by revenue?

Hyatt+Starwood would still not even be third by either measure.

Third of these three. Still not bigger that either Hilton or Marriott.

I would welcome the increased presence, but I fear for everything else I love about Hyatt...

Yes am happy that I would have Diamond status with both Hyatt and Starwood although I am worried that our Diamond benefits would be downgraded significantly...

According to this site, by revenue, IHG is in the lead by a fair amount, with Marriott and Hilton distant 2nd and 3rd. Starwood, Accor, Wyndham, and Hyatt make up the next tier, at about half of Hilton's revenue. Combining *wood and Hyatt would put them at a combined 10.4B USD in 2014, just beind Hilton's 10.5B USD.

They'd pretty much be right around #3 or 4 globally by revenue. I think they'd be around 5 or 6 for rooms and properties, though.

Some very interesting branding issues if this goes through.

Starwood has done a really poor job with its brands, don't think Sheraton, Westin, nor the Luxury Collection have much value at all as brands (though they obviously have some desirable properties), and W was last hot about fifteen years ago.

Also, let's note that Hyatt is not in talks to buy "SPG" - that's just the loyalty program. They are looking to buy Starwood Hotels & Resorts.

I actually don't care too much for the Starwood properties in Korea or Japan. Hyatt's are way better by a country mile.
