As others have said, don't bother with public transportation. An Uber can actually get you there in 45 minutes if there's no traffic (we've done it before).
As another data point, we had the typical Globalist stay here yesterday: stayed on points, upgrade to "atrium" junior suite on the 9th floor, fully comped breakfast even though we ordered a bit over our limit. Valet was free and a bargain in the city. This remains our favorite points hotel in NY, despite the gripes above.

Figured Uber/Lyft. Perfect, thx
Yea, I've read through this thread... going in with zero expectations of any upgrade as a Globalist, and if I get something, great, and if not, no big deal. I may end up using a SUA as I have a few and this is 4 nights so may be worth to burn one.

I think everyone should stay here once. After my third stay here, I quickly realized that there was nothing special about the location, and the 1-2 other reasons I was booking this hotel were not enough to justify the cost.

At check in, they may offer you an upgrade to a one bedroom for $200 per night give or take. I think the one bedroom suites are pretty nice.

As long as it isn't the Studio Suite, which IMO is no better than the standard room here.

A fair number of steps, since entry/exit is on 57th between 6th and 7th.
It's a decent midtown location, literally dozens of hotels have similarly convenient midtown locations. It's not located right on the park, and I would tend to agree with jbandy 10's comment that there's nothing otherwise special about the location.

Its a fine location.
I prefer Andaz 5th ave location as I go to Bryant park more often (if staying at the Andaz) than Central Park (if staying at the Park Hyatt ) closer to theater, quicker to Wall Street via 4 train from Grand Central, etc., quicker to LES vis D, F - even a bus that goes from Tribeca to Bryant Park.
Depends if you lean towards uptown or downtown.

I have lived in NYC for over 20 years, the location of this property is fantastic. It's right in the heart of Midtown near tons of world class restaurants and steps from central park. How is the location not special? The residences in the same building as the hotel sell for tens of millions of dollars.
I didn't mean that the location sucks. It doesn't. But it certainly isn't any better than the Thompson or Andaz. For the record, I don't much care for either of those properties. The Thompson is fine. Their beds are rock hard. But that's every Thompson. The Andaz is okay, too. I just have a lot of gripes about it. It's not worth the asking.

As for location -- access to central park is great. But the street scene is kind of sterile around there.

I had a 4 day point stay booked next May at the PHNY with a SUA for a (junior) King Bed Suite.
As member advanced purchased rates finally appeared I cancelled it and rebooked it with cash and contacted MHC to reapply the SUA.
Due to the endless negative feedback here on the poor junior suites and hopeless upgrade at check in to a premium one I asked her without hope to ask if it was possible to ask for a 1 Bedroom City View Suite. She spontaneously told me she will call them to ask and 30mins later emailed that they had confirmed it!
So unless they lie or give me one of these low floor fake premium suite Im super lucky and looking forward to my first stay at the PHNY!

Funny you say that. I took out a lot of specific details to not belabor the message on my initial posts. In detail: I tried to give PH NY ample opportunities to make it right, and their stance is tough luck and this is the way we want it to be, even though they know they had past complaints. First night, upon going to the room, something felt off on the room that I have received, as this was my first time here at PH NY. I had to look at my email confirmation of what suite I booked and the online photos, as I wanted to give my wife a view of the city outline at night. At first, I called to ask if I can get a higher floor. After seeing I had a confirmed City View Suite, I went back downstairs and asked if 1012 is a City View Suite, and perhaps a mistake has occurred during checkin. The front desk agent assured me the low level city view suites are city view suites, even if it doesn't match the online description or photos. No recovery effort at all.
I called the globalist line, and they recommended discussing this with the GM. I emailed the general concierge email and my concierge with no response even at this time. I went back to the front desk on the same night as check in, and asked if they can have the GM contact me when they are available, and they mentioned he/she is out for the weekend, and will be back Monday. On Saturday night, I proactively asked for the GM's email, and my email was responded on Sunday by the assistant director of operations. In summary, no change will occur, until discussed with management; and the issue is a well known complaint to them. They also know the blueprint is different at the lower levels, and admit to 3 rooms being such different floor plans, and are still considered the City View Suites (knowingly knowing a different floor plan exists for these rooms when compared to the online City View Suite floor plan). They have no plans to change the advertisement of those non City View Suite conforming layouts.
So if PH NY already knows this is an issue, does not even pre-warn that the room I received does not conform to the city view suites as advertise during check in, and hopes the guest don't complain; is not something the globalist team or consumer affairs will fix. This is an issue with management that allows such deceptive practices in the first place. I've been moving my spend to Mandarin Oriental, Four Seasons, and recently Aman over the past 1.5 years, and don't really care if I burn a bridge here.
