10/13 Honeymoon Stay (Part 1)

Originally I had a stay booked at Andaz 5th Ave for our mini honeymoon before the 'real' one (long) next month and reading mixed reviews had me wondering if I shouldn't have cancelled my Splash Suite reservation. In short, the Park Hyatt feels more luxurious than the Andaz 5th, starting with the pool and steam rooms and ending with the much more interesting breakfast menu. We did have a number of small snafus on our short trip which I believe are just growing pains of such a new property - when I did speak up, the issues were all addressed and resolved in a timely manner.

Booking
I booked under the cash + points option plus a DSU and had both my diamond number and note that we were on honeymoon and wanted to check in early. Originally the DSU put us in the Jr Suite which I believe is the standard upgrade but we ended up in the regular Park Suite.

'Pre' Check In
We arrived at 12:30pm and the staff on the ground floor welcomed us and wished us a happy honeymoon. Diamond status was not acknowledged (not a huge deal at this point). We were told that our room was not yet ready and the gentleman currently checked in was a diamond member and technically had until 4pm (which, as a diamond member myself, am well aware of).

We said that was fine and asked to use the pool area while we waited. The staff said that was fine and asked for my cell phone number to call when the room was ready. One of the ladies walked us to the elevator and to the locker rooms, where she left us. However, one needs a key to get into the locker rooms. oops. So, I picked up a hall phone and called down to the front desk, explained what we were doing there and that we thought we may need a key to access the locker room. Staff was unsure and put me on hold to confirm, when they came back they said we needed a key but we should see the women at the spa down the hall who could help, instead of giving us a key (it is entirely possible that you cannot program a key to only access the pool/exercise area, so not a huge deal). Spa ladies came and opened the locker rooms for us.

Pool Area
Locker rooms have vanities with a beautiful partial view of the park, as they are located on the highest floor of the hotel (25). There are Le Labo hair products (but strangely no moisturizers/skin products), combs, brushes, hair ties for women, mouthwash, toothbrush sets, and q tips. There is a rotor machine in both locker rooms used to extract water from swimsuits which is pretty neat, but don't expect a bone dry suit.

There are changing rooms, bathrooms, lockers (with programmable keypads), sinks, and showers. Lockers have a set of slippers and robe in each. Showers are pretty amazing with 9 jets coming from the walls plus a rain head from the ceiling.

Through the locker rooms is a short walkway with stairs leading up to the gym and a door to the pool area. Though reports mentioned the speakers not working, during my stay we had lovely classical music (from Carnegie Hall?) playing in both the locker room and pool area.

The pool area is beautiful with a number of chaise lounges and a handful of plush chairs around the 4' deep 2 lane lap pool. There is a lifeguard on duty who promptly offered us chilled bottles of water (with a neat sketched NYC skyline logo) but was mostly unobtrusive. The pool water was on the cool side but very refreshing. There is a large hot tub (maybe 12x12?) that has built in tile 'lounge chairs' which was a nice touch. The steam room was intense but very unique - the steam was almost oppressively heavy but had a great eucalyptus scent. There is a rain shower in the far corner of the steam room and also outside next to the hot tub.

This pool area alone makes the Park Hyatt really stand out compared to other NY properties. The design feels very luxurious and those small touches really make it special. We loved lounging here waiting for the room, it was a great way to relax and kick off our stay. Part 2 + photos to follow

When did you make the reservation? When I called they weren't doing C&P + DSU combo, just their new LOTS OF CASH + full Points for a suite.

I made the reservation back in maybe March? It was a very long time ago and I had some extra help from my Diamond concierge.

I'm not from NYC, but I would probably tip $5 for OK service, one person with no luggage, and more for outstanding service or help with bags. I don't see the point if the minimum tip is more than the cost of taxi fare. It's a hotel service provided to guests, not some employee who took the initiative to volunteer to do this on his/her own time using his/her own vehicle and personally paying for the gas.

Will post details later in that thread.
Was this the PH in NYC (the subject of this thread) or the one in Washington DC?

10/13 Honeymoon Stay (Part 2)

Checking Into the Room

By 3pm we had not received a call from the front desk that our room was ready, so we decided to head out and do some things downtown. After 3:30 I received a message that the room was now ready to check in, but we still had dinner plans yet so we did not head back until 7:30p.

Upon checking in on the ground floor, we were welcomed and congratulated on our marriage then escorted directly to our rooms to check in, bypassing the lobby desk. We had caught housekeeping in the middle of turndown and there was a brief exchange between our host and housekeeping staff who said they needed another 10 minutes to finish. Our host asked if we could wait, I politely declined saying turndown was not necessary; since we had waiting to check in and out all day we wanted to settle in as soon as possible for a low key evening.

After housekeeping left, still no mention was made of diamond benefits or welcoming me as a diamond guest which I thought odd, but I was even more surprised that the usual welcome Ms Maewest note card in the room was not there, even though the room had been cleaned and ready for 4+ hours at this point, AND our one small bag had already been delivered. I chalked this up to staff being so new at this property, plus I was (luckily) already aware of the diamond benefits afforded.

We were shown around the suite - very spacious sitting area with a sectional couch, 2 chairs, and a desk as well as a half bathroom. Then the bedroom leading into a bathroom with sinks and the soaking tub (no view in this room), then a water closet with Japanese style toilet (built in bidet, fan, heated seat, automated open/close lid) and a rain shower next door. All in all a gorgeously designed, spacious room. The heated toilet seat and heated floor in the immediate tub area were nice touches.

We were on the 10th floor which was not high enough for much of a view, but the floor to ceiling windows were still beautiful. There were a set of His and Hers (marked) slippers in one closet, as well as 2 robes that were nice, but not as heavy and plush as the ones available in the pool locker area. Le Labo tuberose products were placed in both bathrooms, shower and tub area - I found the scent very pleasant, it is my favorite of the Hyatt properties where I've stayed.

I did mention to our host that I was surprised there was no welcome note or amenity, considering we were on honeymoon and last year at the PH Tokyo for our engagement they sent a bottle of champagne, chocolates, and a small cake. Our host immediately apologized and said she would take care of it, then left us to settle in for the night. A few hours later we received a knock at the door and there was a delivery of champagne on ice, plus two small raspberry tarts in a glass box with a handwritten congratulatory card. This was a very nice gesture, much appreciated and more of what I had expected given my previous experience at PH.

We played around with the in room ipad, which can be taken with you throughout the hotel. Streaming radio stations are available which is a festive touch, as well as regular internet access.

10/13 Honeymoon Stay (Part 3)

Pre Breakfast

We were woken up by some distant-ish jackhammering at 8am, but it was a weekday, it WAS 8am, and the property is still under construction. All other times the room was quiet and tranquil; aside from this the only other sign of construction was curtained off areas on the pool level.

Breakfast

This was the best. I've always missed the glory days of the original brunch menu down at the Andaz Wall Street, which was stripped down about a year and a half ago. And the Andaz 5th Ave's breakfast has always seemed a bit... pedestrian. The Back Room has a number of interesting items on the menu, our favorites were:

Shakshouka - a cozy dish with a bit of heat. Soft egg nestled in a spicy tomato pepper stew with merguez sausage.

E Houston Fish Platter - a selection of smoked fish from Russ & Daughters, eggplant and german potato salads, and a mini everything bagel with cream cheese

Bakery Basket - toast points, a super tender apricot scone, blueberry muffin, and small croissant. Loved the Austrian (Staud) jams that were big on flavor, not too sweet nor too gelatinous.

We also ordered the vanilla poached apricots + granola but if you are interested in this dish I would recommend asking the server if it will be made with apricots. Mine was actually plums, which was fine, but I noticed another guest had the same issue 2 weeks ago when they ordered this dish. Not sure why (both times) the server wouldn't mention that apricots were unavailable and to expect the plums instead.

With menu items as exciting as these, the 57th street breakfast pales in comparison. We decided to chance it and did not ask about substitutions since reports seemed to be a mixed bag. After signing the normal receipt, the equivalent charges were removed upon checkout of the hotel.

Bicycles

Another guest amenity is a 2 hour complimentary bike rental. Calling down to the concierge, you will set up a time and either pick up a letter/voucher from the concierge on your way out and walk a block over to 58th to the bike shop or you can choose for the bikes to be delivered to the hotel. Pro: delivering bikes to the hotel = no waiting Con: if you are not an experienced cyclist you may want to go to the shop so the bike and helmets are fitted properly. There is also a large map at the bike shop showing the loop around central park.

We had gorgeous weather on Tuesday and the roads are closed off to cars during the day making for a pleasant ride around the park. A helmet and lock come with the bike making it very easy to stop and take time to enjoy relaxing around the park, off the bike. Would definitely recommend.

10/13 Honeymoon Stay (Part 4)

Checkout

This was our one final (and biggest) snafu during the stay. After the bike ride, we changed into robes in the room and went down to the pool one last time. After the pool, we came back up to the room but alas, our keys were deactivated.

I'm pretty sure this was a check in error - I mentioned we would be utilizing the 4pm checkout, but I believe our host already had the keys programmed and ready to go when she escorted us from the ground floor up to the room (remember, no stop at the lobby desk). However, I'd have assumed as a diamond guest they would just automatically default to 4pm... oh well.

We only had about an hour to quickly shower and change then head out to catch the bus home so I quickly went downstairs to the lobby desk (feeling a bit out of place in my robe). The gentleman to help me quickly took me back up to the room and let my husband and I in, offering to have 2 new cards sent up. I explained we were showering/changing and had no need to get back into the room once we left to check out, which would be shortly.

As we were changing/in various states of undress, housekeeping knocked on the door. We had lit the red privacy button but she must not have heard us scrambling 'one minute!' and came in before I could get to the door after getting my robe on. She was very obviously embarrassed and felt terrible, apologizing and explaining the front desk had just sent her up saying we checked out with orders to turn down the room. This is the only reason I could think that housekeeping would ignore the privacy light and enter the room.

I called down and spoke with the manager to let them know what had happened; she was very apologetic and offered compensation of points as well as wanting to personally see us off in the hotel car and apologize again in person, all of which I thought was fair. At least we have a good honeymoon story to tell!

Overall the property is beautiful and we had a great time, though it is clear there are still some service kinks to work out. Most surprising is the lack of alignment with basic Hyatt levels of consistency, especially around acknowledgement/explanation to Diamond guests but I feel those are small issues that will hopefully soon be fixed. We love the property and can't wait to return - hopefully standard award space will open up starting in 2015!

No, that was in DC. Sorry for being unclear, I was responding to BlissWorld's earlier comment.

At NY, my upgrade was one category up from Park King to Park Deluxe King.

Perhaps that post #162 should be deleted here, mods? Don't want it to be confusing.

With SPG, 99% of my stays at their high end brands like St Regis and Luxury Collection have been pre-blocked/upgraded to at least one category above. Often times, I get free suite upgrades without having to use SPG SNA.

I mean, no one is asking Park Hyatts to give out suites for free, but it annoys me they don't even bother upgrading a single category.

2 night award stay

We just stayed 2 nights using our free nights. I can't imagine a better place to use the free night certificates if you can find availability...

A few thoughts:
- The rooms are very large and have great beds and showers
- The service was phenomenal the entire weekend
- I don't think you can beat the location of the hotel
- We used the free bike rental and took their Mercedes S-class to dinner. Recommend both
- As a platinum we were able to check in around 10:00am and check-out at 2:00pm
- It was my wife's 30th bday and they brought up a small cake and champagne free of charge
- Again, the staff couldn't have been more friendly or helpful.

Awesome review and so good to hear thank you!
What makes a great bed? Firm or soft?
The Hyatt Grand bed is medium firmness with a box spring
some Park Hyatt's Vienna and Sydney hard as an ironing board or very firm mattress no box spring Of course its subjective. But please do tell!

Stayed here last night. I can confirm that the bed were firm and no box spring. Sheets were great, made in India linen exclusively for PYNY.

I had great sleep however. My room was facing towards other building so it was more quiet compare to 7th avenue facing rooms.

Swimming pool music and jacuzzi bubble jets are down still.

Last Friday we were in the jacuzzi on the 25th floor and the jets were definitely working. Great pool and workout area. The Swiss shower in the locker room is unreal.

The bed was quite firm. I would call it the perfect firmness.

Move hotels twice? Where are you staying to begin with? And if you were changing hotels just to experience the PHNY, make it your last night (or first), and you're only moving hotels once
