Hyatt Announces Plans for Hyatt Regency Almaty - 2017

Dear Flyertalkers,

Hyatt announced plans for a Hyatt Regency hotel in Kazakhstan. Expected to open in 2017, Hyatt Regency Almaty will be located in the heart of the city and will offer easy access to the business district, Almaty International Airport and the Kazakhstan Stock Exchange.

That means Kazakhstan (Kazakhstan of all places) will have as many Hyatt properties as Spain, Portugal, and Italy combined: 1

Most of former Soviet Republics have at least 1 Hyatt.

That's pretty sad.

EDIT: Doing some research it seems Hyatt is chasing special events. Almaty will host the 2017 Winter Universiade. They also built a Hyatt in Sochi for the Olympics. And, Hyatt planned two hotels in Vladivostok for the 2012 APEC. Those still aren't open.

This is way past do. Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan already have Hyatts.

Good point.

I'm not opposed to the new Hyatts, although chasing events may not be the best long term strategy. I would like some solid options - especially PHs - in Spain/Portugal - and maybe a few more in Italy.

A Hyatt Regency hotel was located in Almaty for a number of years - I did a review of the property in October 2004. At that time, it was no more than a 2.5 or 3-star property by western standards. Fortunately, Hyatt sold the property circa 2009 or 2010 and it is now the Rahat Palace.
