More nickel and diming

FYI. I am staying here now, and starting today, the complimentary outrigger canoe ride and the complimentary ukulele lesson activities will now carry a fee; $15 for the canoe ride and $10 for the ukulele lesson (per person).

Just finished my stay here and was pleasantly surprised at checkout. None of my breakfast charges showed up on the bill. I did checkin prior to the change to the diamond breakfast though. Anyways... Post change still did a few "full" breakfasts and also did a la carte (wanted to try something different and it was really good!). I was planning to pay for it when I made the orders and had no expectations of them comping anything. I even signed two different receipts indicating which portion was comped and the other were the additional costs. Saved a good few hundred dollars! Just sharing my experience. YMMV

I have a question about the current challenge. A lot of people say that the "fake" diamonds ruined the breakfast policy for all diamonds. What is the reasoning for this? I few years ago I did a diamond challenge and I didn't get the DSU until I completed the challenge. Are they getting them before the challenge now?

Wow, its a good thing I didn't go down to the outrigger this morning! It would have been quite a surprise. I went to the desk and while talking to the person there I noticed they were writing out the new diamond breakfast policy. Most likely to hand out to the employees so they all know how to handle it. Enjoy your stay!

Yes, that's what is happening now....

Want to stay in Hawaii for a week with the family, apply for the challenge after getting status with the competition through a credit card. Book a points+cash rate, upgrade with a DSU and enjoy free breakfast for the whole family. And then complain you didn't get the full ocean view or that you weren't allowed to stay in one room/suite with your six kids :-).

A logical result with all the promotion here and by the bloggers. And entirely the result of how GP decided to run things.... but a burden on some of the more aspiration properties as well. And that's most likely one of the major reasons they decided to cut back benefits or become less accommodating with their upgrades.

That helps explain things. This morning at the restaurant my server said they've been getting a lot of diamonds lately.

I have another question about the credit card status. Don't most hotels give a low status with the credit card? For example Marriott gives silver status which would match up with Hyatt platinum, not Diamond.

For the challenge most seem to be using Hilton Gold.... there's quite the thread about the challenge and what people use to qualify.

Yes and I'm not sure what they gain by poaching Hilton Golds. But I'm sure they've thought this out...

Yeah, I doubt that the average Hilton gold will end up maintaining Diamond status. Of course there will be some, but maybe one out of ten.

I think the management at the Andaz implemented this change poorly. But it sounds like most of the blame should be on HGP. I'm sure this property was really annoyed with the situation. Hopefully HGP will change some policies around.

That's a change that I might actually approve of. I went to the desk soon after arrival to ask about signing up for the canoe ride, and the guy said that it was already filled to capacity for a week out, which was longer than our stay. A $15 charge should be enough to assure availability for all those that wish to experience this.

I think it's more likely they wanted to offer a more reasonably priced breakfast option to their guests, and I had the Diamond breakfast this morning, and it was still very good. Missing from it were the specialty juice-ologist juices and the specialty items.

I asked for and received the egg dish of my choice, freshly made, and a side of bacon, which came with 6 or 7 pieces of bacon. The server was very accommodating when I asked what I could order from the side menu. (It's only supposed to be one item.) They tried to bring me a second side of bacon with the eggs, and offered it to me when I pointed out I already had the bacon. I couldn't possibly eat any more at that point, so I refused them.

The breads, fresh fruits, meats, yogurts, and smoked fish with all the fixings were great, as was the juice and coffee. It's still a very good Diamond breakfast, better than most properties, even without the specialty items. And if you want those specialty items you can buy up to them.

They were out of smoked salmon this morning, but instead had smoked ono which was very good.

My opinion only. I'm sure plenty of people here will trash me for having it. How dare they reduce the breakfast benefit! After all me and my giraffe are Diamond members! I would have agreed to some point had I not been able to order a freshly made egg dish of my choice. I don't know if other people will have the same experience that I did. I hope they do.

As for the "fake diamond" conspiracy, there's no such thing as a fake diamond. Your task, should you choose to accept it, is the figure out how to separate the hyperbole and supposition from actual facts here on Flyertalk. I seriously doubt that had anything to do with the breakfast change here. I think Peter hit it on the head, they simply wanted to offer a more reasonably affordable option to the majority of their guests. That's just my opinion and it's certainly not a fact, just like everybody else's guess about it here. This is an upscale resort in an upscale area, but it's not Paris or Milan.

David, I agree with you!
The diamond breakfast is more than adequate. The server brought me a pour over coffee this morning and mentioned that it wasnt on the diamond breakfast (since it was part of the "coffee bar") but said not to worry. They are all very accommodating and super warm/friendly. They have a lilikoi pound cake and neutella brioche that are incredible and include local jams and a coconut butter which is amazing. My (and a few others') concern was how they handled the change.
They seem to still be being super accommodating right now during the transition but saying something like " effective for reservations made after XXXX date this will be the diamond breakfast" may have helped tik quell the initial surprise and disappointment from the present and upcoming guests.

In addition to the breakfast downgrade for diamonds, has this property changed the policy for Diamond late checkout? When I stayed here last September they asked if I wanted a late checkout when I checked in (similar to most Hyatt properties) Yesterday when I checked in, I requested a late checkout and the front desk stated that it's based on availability and I couldn't request it until the day of departure.

T&C: late checkout is "subject to availability at Hyatt resorts and casino." I imagine Andaz Maui would fall under resort, especially if HR Kyoto is considered a resort.

Everyone is really helping me come here in January with no expectations.

That's what I was told as well. Same with the Grand Wailea down the road.
