Hyatt Regency Orange County (Anaheim) CA REVIEW - MASTER THREAD

Hi,

We're going to Disneyland and got the Hyatt Regency Orange County for $27 /nt via priceline. Haven't been able to find any reviews for this property?

We canceled our stay at the Hilton, where I am gold, because the Hyatt was so much cheaper.

Thanks.

Snorkdoc Jan 8, 2003 4:09 pm

If you mean the Hyatt in Contra Costa, I don't care for this property. It is the only kind of atrium-style hotel I have seen where the rooms face inward instead of to the outside, so that not only is your view of the lobby but all the lobby noise reverberates upward, so it is a very noisy hotel.

If you mean the Irvine hotel, the renovated rooms are beautiful, with original art and comfortable furnishings.

AlexB Jan 8, 2003 8:50 pm

To clarify and expand upon Snorkdoc's post:

1. About half of this hotel's rooms do indeed face an interior atrium, but they are pretty well soundproofed, so unless there is a party of some sort in the atrium, you won't be disturbed.

2. Half of the hotel is brand new; it was formerly an office tower that was gutted and turned into additional rooms. Those rooms are all new, though rather sterile.

3. Contra Costa is a county in Northern CA. I think he/she meant to say Garden Grove, which is the city where this hotel is located.

For $27 (plus about $10/night parking), you have an excellent deal in a very nice hotel. Enjoy.

JIMCHI Jan 8, 2003 9:55 pm

We've stayed there several times. Very nice rooms, especially the family suites. We didn't notice any noise. Shuttle to Disneyland runs every 30 minutes. You'll be happy, especially with the rate you got.

LLM Jan 9, 2003 10:10 pm

Make sure you request the North Tower (the renovated one). For $35 you can upgrade to a king suite or for $25 to a kids suite (king room with an adjoining bunkbed room). They gave me the 1500 bonus GP on two Priceline stays.

LLM Jan 10, 2003 11:24 pm

We faced the atrium when we upgraded to the suite and didn't hear any noise even the hotel was full. If you'll be needing a room with two queens, there is only one on each floor of the North Tower. These all have a nice exterior view of the pool.

BTW, my son visited the South Tower (where the gym is) and said it is a pit. Too funny, I signed up for GP after I got the first $27 PL stay and now have an FFN aftr the second. However, the only place I'll be going before April that has a Hyatt is this one so my FFN is only worth $27.

Also, if you are bringing kids, I hope the TV doesn't freak out like it did last time we were there. I was surfing during commercials and came across low rent porn. I rushed over to the kids room but luckily they were already sleeping.

LIH Prem Jan 14, 2003 12:05 am

I stayed there two nights over thanksgiving day weekend, using one paid night and one FFN night. We flew a red-eye to LAX late Thursday night.

When we arrived at 7AM they found one room for us. It was a suite in the older tower. Nothing to write home about, but the fact that they accomodated us when the hotel was full at that hour was great.

Their shuttle is not as good as the city-run shuttles that serve the Hilton or the Marriott. (The Hilton has also switched to the city-run shuttle, shared with the Marriott and another hotel on the way to the Marriott.) They Hyatt shuttle was a big intercity-style bus and takes forever to load and unload, and stops in the areas where the taxis load/unload at d-land. While the Hyatt is the first stop on the shuttle, and you can usually get on it there, getting on it for the trip back to the hotel can be challenging.

While I would stay there again, the Marriott and Hilton are a bit better for the use of the shuttle. Obviously, I felt that I had great service at this property (especially having room service bring me a coffee from the starbucks downstairs while Sarah was napping Friday afternoon.)

I just returned from my trip to Disneyland and our stay at the Hyatt Orange County (Garden Grove).

As I said in my first post, we stayed on a $27 / nt priceline bid for 3 nights. A few friends from San Francisco were also staying there for $99 / nt booked off the hyatt web site.

We were assigned room 803 in the south tower. I had requested a room in the north tower, but the front desk clerk said that there were no non-smoking rooms available. Our assigned room faced the interior atrium and the furniture was a bit run down. We didn't spend much time in the room since we were out sightseeing during the day, so the quality wasn't a big concern.

In comparison to the renovated North Tower, our room was not nearly as nice. We really liked the large windows in our friends suite.

I just read on this forum, that I could have been comped Diamond status due to my Hilton Gold. I think that would have made a difference when I had requested a room in the north tower. I also usually enjoy having breakfast in the hotel while vacationing, so it would have saved us a bit of money if we didn't have to go out each morning.

We found it difficult to find parking at some of the local restaurants for dinner and the wait times were about an hour. The hotel restaurant was almost always empty.

Our total came to about $130, which includes the room rate and parking for 3 days.

Being a diamond gets you no where at this hotel. I had two stays through priceline in the past two weeks. My first stay I called the hotel directly. I asked them to add my Diamond number to the reservation and made a request for a kids suite in the North tower. I was told they were unable to add anything to "internet" reservations. Upon check in, I got the kids suite but had to pay $25 for the upgrade. I was also told that I was not entitled to an amenity or the breakfast certificates because they couldn't add my Diamond number to the account. When we got to our room, I called the Diamond line and was told that the hotel was wrong and all Diamond members were entitled to their benefits regardless of the rate. I was also told that they've had a lot of trouble with this property and the GM there. They appologised and said they would make a call. Later in the evening, we received a voicemail saying that they would allow us to get our amenity but not the breakfast certs.

A week later we had a stay at this hotel again. This time I called the diamond line and they added my number right away. I also called 1800CHECKIN and requested a kids suite in the North Tower. They got me the room at no additional charge and were very nice about it. Upon check in, I encountered the same thing about no Diamond priviledges. This time the front desk clerk said they were told specifically by the GM that they were not allowed to give out amenity cards and breakfast certs. on "internet" rates. So once again I called Gold Passport and a different CS agent tell me the same thing. They had numerous complaints about this property and there was not much he could do, but if I wanted to, I could call the supervisor back the next day.

I didn't bother because it wasn't that big of a deal to me. I guess it was irritating based on principal. I've never encountered any problems at other properties when I've decided to use priceine. Honestly, the only purpose of the trip was to take my 4 year old to Disneyland. We were rained out 3 days in a row and had to come back a 2 weeks later. If it wasn't for that reason, I probably wouldn't have gone back to this property ever.

JIMCHI Mar 5, 2003 8:38 am

I also had problems with inflexibility at this property. You didn't miss much by not getting the breakfast certificates. They entitle you to a buffet breakfast only and it's not much of a buffet. I wanted to apply the value of the vertificate -or even just $10- towards something off the regular menu. Absolutely positively not. Wrote to the GM there about the issue and never even received a reply. SO, we now stay at the Marriott. Their breakfast plan includes a buffet also, but it's quite a buffet and they offered to give me anything on the regular menu without any charge.

westcoastman Mar 5, 2003 12:01 pm

I have had terrible experiences as a diamond (only in the past few weeks) and will no longer go to this hotel. I have NEVER heard of a hotel not applying the value of the coupon towards a menu item. No amenities, no points for incidentals, not even a simple thank you. I have let my feelings known to the Hyatt G.P. so if it is not corrected now it will never be as long as Peter Sears continues to work as the manager there.

Lemon-Lime Mar 5, 2003 12:19 pm

When I called Gold Passport the first time they told me they were having problems with the GM. I think they told me his name was Dave Sears? Well, whatever his name is, they said that Gold Passport was "negotiating" with him on the issue.

What is there to negotiate? I was always under the impression that our Diamond benefits were supposed to be honored at all Hyatts. I can understand the difference in services, amenity choices,RCs, etc but to deny all the benefits is ridiculous. Also, if they've had so many complaints about the GM and it's obvious he has no interest in doing anything about it..why is he still there?

They also don't give points for incidentals? Well I guess that explains why I haven't gotten credit for my stays yet.

Threy Mar 14, 2003 8:38 am

Had a really bad stay there on Monday.

First of all there was a huge convention group checking in ( Home Depot ) with a line at Check In about 150 ft. long and I am not kidding.Bypassed the line to ask at the Concierge desk, if there is any line for GPP or GPP Diamond members.Obviously a stupid question answered with a short NO !!
At least the question was answered very efficiently, the movement of the line did actually not represent anything being handled efficiently...

Surprisinly after 10 minutes the concierge waved me over which resulted in some strange views from the Home Depot line. Some kind of check in supervisor checked me in and gave me Room 1117, unfortunately in the old tower. To my excuse, I was obviously not smart enough to study this thread before.....
Chose the cheese plate and two sodas as the Diamond amenity. They were delivered shortly before 10 p.m after checking in at about 8 p.m
Requested delivery time noted on that sheet was 9 p.m. , but the delay was more than ok and the plate with some imported cheeses, grapes and crackers was nice and more than enough for two people at this late hour.

But the room was disgusting, after a really bad stay two days ago at the SFO Airport Hyatt this was my second bad Hyatt room in a row.I am really not kidding, but any halfway decent AAA 2 Diamond Hotel has a nicer and bigger bathroom minus the Hyatt portico products, which are certainly superior.
Beside that the room was simply old and small, the carpet had so much stains, way too much to count them and I am not exaggerating by guessing that 50 % of the carpet was simply full of stains...

At Check In they promised to deliver the AAA Full Breakfast certificates, unfortunately only one certificate for the cont. Breakfast made it up to my room, which resulted in another wait of 10 minutes to get the coupons the next morning, because from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m only one manager was on duty to help customers checking out....

Breakfast was solid, the scrambled eggs and potatoes were cold, but the fresh fruit made up for that.

After another wait of 15 minutes trying to check out , the same manager who gave me the breakfast coupons some hours ago asked, if everyting was allright which resulted in a major complain from my side, actually the first complain at any hotel in a very long time...

He handed me a complimentary upgrade certificate and promised to forward my complain to the GM with a good chance of getting a free night certificate on top of that....

So my advise would be to go for the new tower or simply stay away. The old tower is a disgrace for the Hyatt chain( would actually be a disgrace for any quality hotel chain ) and should renovated immediately.

westcoastman May 1, 2003 3:26 pm

Ha Ha Ha

You MAY be given the business floor of the "south tower." (No more free bunk-bed rooms) Sometimes they give amenities and coupons but recently they have not. Parking is always over $10 for everyone when all the neighboring hotels have free parking. Save your reciept since your GP number may just mysteriously disappear from the reservation at check out or even after you leave.

Good Luck

I stayed there last week, for the first time in their "new" wing. It is an acceptable Hyatt, nothing special. No RC, but they have almost always upgraded me to a suite.

I think Irvine is a better property, but it depends on why you are there to begin with. We use it to take the kids to Disneyland, and they have a free shuttle every 30 minutes. This saves about 40 minutes roundtrip, as if you park at Disneyland, you have to take a tram to and from the park anyway (and pay $8 for that pleasure.)

I'm planning on going back to Disneyland in early October will probably be staying here again for one night if we can get it on priceline. This time I'm going as a Diamond and it will be interesting to see if there are any differences.

The south wing's "old" rooms were not horrible, but if I were paying the regular rate and got one of those rooms, I would be disappointed. If I remember correctly, the new rooms were nicer, but rather plain with nothing special.

sggolf Sep 2, 2003 12:08 am

Add me to the list of having a disappointing stay. I have stayed there quite a few times and have "always" previously had a positive stay. I even recommended this hotel to my relatives!

* Asked reservations to note a rollaway bed was needed. Did not receive. Called front desk to request again, mentioned no problem. Did not receive. After waiting three hours, I called back and received.

* Called front desk for MC game piece. Told me, never heard of it, but will check and call back. Never got call back.

* Didn't get a newspaper on Sat even though the room two doors down got one.

* Called and asked for 4 sets of towels in room and left note on mirror requesting the same. Each day, still only received 3 sets and only two face towels. Guess they figured we'd all share.

* Late on Sun night, could not sleep as my room was vibrating due to some source of loud music. Called front desk to inquire. Mentioned they would send security to check out. Heard nothing.

As I pressed my ear to the windows, I figured out it was the restaurant at the back of the hotel. They had a live band playing. I could hear the band over the TV and air conditioner! It honestly sounded like someone pulled their car stereo under my window.

Called again. I asked them to come up and listen how loud it was. The front desk person told me that they do not have the time to listen to each and every room nor did they have any other complaints and that they mentioned they could do nothing. I asked if there was a noise ordinance or something. She said she might say something after midnight. Asked for a manager, said none on duty. I finally went to bed after 1130pm on Sun nite as this was when the band stopped playing. (Now if the band playing was drowning out the wedding reception in the hotel that night, wouldn't they have to say/do something?)

* At gift shop, minimum room charge is $5. No mention is made of this anywhere, even copy of charge slip is shown on register.

* At check-in, asked for GP1500 bonus, said no problem, I'll make a note of it. At check-out, I inquired about the bonus again, and this time he mentioned, here let me add it.

* When asked at check out if everything during my stay went well? I mentioned, so-so and he said nothing as if he ignored my comment.

This was a very disappointing stay and I didn't even mention everything. I'm glad my next stay in the area is at the hotel up the street.

Threy Apr 12, 2004 2:26 am

Had a good stay there a month or so ago, upgraded to a suite in the new tower, nice Diamond Amenity ( Cheese plate + lots of fresh fruit )
Breakfast coupons provided without a problem.

I parked across the street from the Hyatt at the Sports Authority lot, invested the $ 10 Hyatt parking charge into some stuff there, placed the bag on the seat and went over the street to the Hyatt ( 100 yards walk )

No problem at all...

MaxMiles Apr 12, 2004 5:06 pm

I stay there a lot on PL and regular rates. I have only been put in the dreaded South tower once. When on a non-PL rate, I usually get the one bedroom exec suite (a smallish bedroom and nice size "living room" with a fridge, microwave, 2 TVs. When on PL I usually get a standard room in the North Tower. I sometimes have to ask, but I always get the Diamond Amenity (pretty good choices) and breakfast coupons (no lounge here) that gives you free Cont'l brfst (or $3 charge to upgrade to hot buffet) at the restaurant.

I just checked out on Sunday and there is nothing going on in the South Tower. Seems like any improvements there have, unfortunately, been delayed. They were replacing the air filters on the 3rd floor which tells me that it will be some time before any renovations will begin (if they were starting soon, I would doubt they would bother putting in new filters!).

The disparity between the two towers has been well documented here, but I must add that the condition of the South Tower is a crying shame :( . The lobby and North Tower say 4 star hotel, but that South Tower is worse than a Days Inn. I am sure spending money in a tough lodging market is hard to justify ($25 PL rates lately!), but leaving things the way they are (with such a huge difference in guest experiences based on which tower they are put in) should not be an option. I really hope that renovations do indeed start soon!!!

AlexB Apr 13, 2004 4:07 pm

The rule is, Ask for Mark at check out

I stay at this hotel approximately once every three weeks as a Diamond on a PL rate. There is a disparity between how you are treated at check in vs. check out.

First, you absolutely must use 800-CHECKIN. Ask for the North Tower, give them your GP #, and ask for the bonus code of the day, usually GP1500.

When you arrive at night, you will be checked in by one of the "Robert Palmer girls," a team of stern, out-of-the-box young ladies who usually remove your GP # from the reservation and will occasionally deny you Diamond benefits. Be prepared to call Hyatt's 800 # from your cell phone to force them to give you what you deserve. Occasionally they will promise you a welcome amenity, but it will mysteriously never arrive.

Don't fret, the fix comes in the morning. There is usually only one person manning the desk, "Mark." A complete professional. He will re-add your GP #, re-add the bonus code, give you the welcome amenity, and in general make you feel special. If not for Mark, this hotel would be in clear violation of GP standards.

Finally, a kudo to Julia. The Robert Palmer girls used to deny me Diamond benefits 100% of the time until Julia intervened. Now, if you stand up for yourself, you'll receive them about 80% of the time.

Jamester Apr 30, 2004 8:34 pm

I had the pleasure of staying at this facility last Friday. Contrary to what people said in this thread, my overall experience was close to perfect. ^

- 1800-CHECK-IN gave me a mini suite (I'm a Diamond) in the North Tower. I did ask the nice operator to get me a room in the North Tower before she put me on hold to contact the hotel. No need to memorize which room is in which tower, just tell them what you want and confirm it. :-:
- Location is pretty good; close to the park (but I wasn't there to have fun)
- Parking is outdoor but adjacent/walking distance to the hotel. It's $12/day, take your ticket and get it validated for in & out privilege. (it won't earn you GP points btw)
- Lobby was immaculate, clean and quiet at around 8PM on a Friday evening
- Checkin was speedy (had to wait for maybe 5 minutes)
- Yes, I had to remind the young front desk person about my Diamond Amenity (which she apologized) and it was delivered within an hour. I got a full bottle (instead of the thin bottle) of the Salmon Creek Merlot.
- Breakfast coupon was given (but did not use since I had to leave early in the morning)
- Room in the North Tower was very clean, seems very new. Bed is your typical Hyatt bed.
- In-room dining was courteous and timely.
- Surprise surprise, upon checkout, I wasn't charged with parking; I drove up to the exit gate (this was at 5:30am though) and it opened automatically.

So I really don't know what's all the bad stuff about. Granted, most of the experience mentioned on this thread was from 2003 so things may have gotten better since then. I'm a relatively low maintenance traveler and if you are as well, you would be pleased.

Feel free to PM me for questions.
Thx!

Update on South Tower Renovations

from the hotel website today...

*Please Be Advised*

The South Tower will be under renovation August 29 - November 19, 2004.

As glad as I am the renovation will be taking place, I doubt it will stay a Category 1 hotel after that.

holtju2 Jul 11, 2004 10:25 pm

I have stayed there several times before becoming Diamond and after. Sometimes I ask at the time of using 1-800 check in to deliver the Diamond amenity in advance because I might be arriving very late.

They have always put me in to the new tower and I once got the small "suite".

The Sydney Cove Suite at the park Hyatt in San Francisco, where I am writing this, is much nicer, however.

Calvin Nov 2, 2004 3:38 pm

Renovation nearing completion

Just found this post from biddingfortravel. A note from the sales manager at this property. This is great news. I'm afraid that Hyatt will now upgrade this hotel from being a Category 1 hotel.

------------------------------
My name is Brian Gehrisch, and I am a sales manager at the Hyatt Regency Orange County. I contacted Sheryl the Administrator to share some information about our South Tower renovation, and she suggested that I post it for everyone to read.

It is a great pleasure to announce that the renovation of our South Tower is nearing an end, and that as of Friday, October 29, 2004 non-renovated rooms are no longer available for any guest. All guests staying in our South Tower will once again experience the superior standards of quality that the Hyatt name represents.

The transformation of the South Tower is truly remarkable. Here is a summary of the drastic changes involved:
- Complete renovation of all guestrooms and hallways
- All wallpaper has been replaced
- All carpet has been replaced
- All furniture has been replaced
- All window treatments have been replaced
- New upgraded lighting has been installed
- All popcorn ceilings have been scraped and painted
- New granite countertops have been installed in the bathrooms
- New tile floors have been installed in the bathrooms
- All Double beds have been converted to Queens
- 67 King rooms have been converted to Queen/Queen to accommodate guest demand
- All beds have been replaced with Hyatt™s new Grand Bed

We are particularly excited about the introduction of the Grand Bed. It features an exceptional non-flip pillow-top mattress. A footprint-style bed base replaces the conventional bed frame, a form-fitted box spring cover replaces the traditional dust ruffle, and the bedspread is eliminated entirely in exchange for a 21-ounce down blanket. The Grand Bed is the new standard for comfort in all Hyatt Hotels in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean; and we are thrilled to offer it to our guests.

I want to thank all of you who have shared your experiences with the Hyatt Regency Orange County. We value your opinions, and your suggestions help us to constantly improve. I strongly encourage anyone who was not satisfied with the South Tower in the past to come back and see what a difference we have made. I am confident that you will be very happy with the new rooms. I also encourage all of you to continue giving your feedback to our hotel management immediately should a situation arise during your stay. The sooner an issue is brought to our attention, the sooner we can make it right.

On behalf of our entire staff, thank you for your continued support.

Warm Regards,

Brian Gehrisch

HR Anaheim (Orange County) - Specific Questions

Hi -

Have learned some good info using search. I am in a bit of a different situation than most and any thoughts/ideas greatly appreciated.

Planning the April 2006 (yes, 1 year from now) family vacation to California (from Maryland). Going to spend about 6-7 nights in San Diego, then drive up to Disney for about 3 nights, mainly really to spend about 2 days at Disney. It will be me, Mrs. EC Traveler, and Little Man EC Traveler - 2 1/2 years old then.

Suffice to say there are a zillion choices here, and the Hyatt Anaheim has caught my eye. Reason? B/C with child we nearly always want either 2 rooms (connecting) or a suite where the little guy can sleep in his own area while we stay up and watch TV, etc. The Anaheim Hyatt has these various suites.

Anyone have information on the different suites? They have the Kids Suite - which is cheapest online - which should suffice since he will only really need any type of bed at that age. The other suites are more $ but curious why. All I need is a King Bed, a closing room divider, and any size other room where he can sleep...in other words, he can sleep even in the suite area, if the room closes off and is remotely sound-proof. So - anyone have any info on which type of suite to get?

Next - it really appears the best route is PL but I am seeing recently that getting a suite, or even connecting rooms (via 2 PL bids) is a bit rough and we are not willing to risk it. ANy thoughts on that?

Next - why is this hotel so much more during the week ($178 AAA rate vs $128) then the weekend? Is it b/c of conventions? Any way around this? We'd rather be there like a Weds, Thurs, Fri nites to avoid the weekend crowds at Disney, but Weds/Thurs are much higher than Fri/Sat.

Almost Lasty - anyone have experience with the stay certs? $99/night - bad deal, though, cuz no GP points, right? Plus, not a suite...

Lastly - I see online they have a Disney package deal but can't seem to find out how much it costs - every date I pick says sold out for 2005. Any info on this?

I have read the postings about the other hotels, but think Anaheim is where we want to be - priority 1 is close to Disney (along with a suite).

Then I guess the question is this - anyone have reward experience with this? I assume the base 5000 gets you a normal room, so does it take the 8000 to get a Kids suite? Or is that for one of the "bigger suites" and can the kids be had for less? Or maybe, can I pay the 5000 GP points and then pay $ for hte upgrade.

I know this is a ton of questions - any help is greatly appreciated. Why a year in advance? To get the reward flights of course :-) 331 days is quickly approach for the end of April 2006...

Thanks again and thanks a bunch!!!

Our family has stayed in King rooms (includes a sofa, desk, and chair), a 2 Queen room (desk... maybe a chair), several Kids Suites (depends on the size), and a 1 Bedroom Suite (desk, chair, sofa, coffee table). Kids Suites are the best, followed by 1 bedroom, then King. 2 Queens are only preferable if your child co-sleeps and one of you actually wants to get some rest.

Every suite I've stayed in (except one) has had connecting french doors. Not bad, but not great soundproofing either. Defintely better than an open floor plan.

Your taking a significant risk with Priceline in Anaheim. They have some great deals, but there is also the chance of landing a dive like the Radisson. Also, with PL you're only guaranteed a regular room. IF they have Kid's Suites available at check-in, the upgrade cost is $40/night.

This hotel does a lot of trade in conventions, both at the hotel and at the Anahiem Convention Center.

No experience here. You might call the hotel and find out what their Entertainment Rate is, if you're not concerned about points or stay credit. (iffy on the ENT rate).

This year is Disney's 50th Birthday. You may be picking dates that are unusually impacted. Try calling the hotel direct.

This is our second choice for DL. If you can afford it, staying onsite at the Grand California Hotel really can't be beat, especially with a 2 year old. April is Value Season here, and I would expect the prices next year to be better than this year. I, personally, would even give up the suite if it meant staying on-site. A trip to the Hyatt mid-day will take at least 45 from the time you start walking to the gate. A trip to your room at the GCH takes about 5-15 mins TOPS. Add the same amount of time if you want to go back the same day.

I DO, however, prefer the Hyatt to the Paradise Pier Hotel. Rooms are comparable and the service is MUCH better at the Hyatt. Haven't stayed at the DL Hotel.

When staying at the Hyatt with a toddler, expect to drive in, or spend a lot of time stuggling with a stroller while you try to find a spot on the Hotel shuttle.

As a Plat, you can expect a regular room on an award stay. 8000 points will guarantee you a 1 bedroom suite. At check-in, you might ask very nicely to be switched to a Kids Suite (should be an even money trade), but I've been told that a 1 bedroom suite is what you should expect.

Thanks again and thanks a bunch!!!

I'd also recommend visiting www.laughingplace.com for great discussion boards on Disneyland Trip Planning.

You might also want to check with the hotel if they would let you upgrade to a kids suite with a platinum certificate. I know it is upgrade to Regency club but they might say it is an even wash... Also you can upgrade to suite with 6K points sometimes but may require certain rates.

Otherwise, I would be inclined for the 8K reward redemption rather than paying the rates if rate is more than 125+

btw, Hyatt do get a lot of conventions. I am going to one in Anaheim and Hyatt was one of the convention hotels.

March 2005 Hyatt OC

I redeemed 10,000 points for a two-night stay (WED+THU) before Easter 2005. As a Platinum, I was given a nonsmoking "Conference King" room, which was basically a double-sized room. I was pre-booked into the room, since they had all my paperwork waiting for me, so it was not based on an upgrade request made in person.

Half the room had a 10-foot conference table with ergonomic seating for 8, along with a fridge and wetbar/sink. The TV was extra large (27"?) and mounted on a credenza to flip between the King bed and the two-couch seating area. The couches were regular couches, not sleepers.

The room was one of the few with balconies that open up in to the lobby atrium. There was quite a bit of balcony space, but no chairs. It wouldn't exactly be a thrill to sit out there anyway since its an enclosed atrium.

It was particularly cumbersome to use the wired high-speed service, as there was no desk or designated work area. They had the wiring set up for the end table between the sofas. I was able to improvise and maneuver enough to get the cords to the coffee table, which certainly made for awkward net surfing.

Did not spend much time at the hotel, but I have stayed before (on PL) and its much much nicer since the renovation was complete. There is a lengthy thread on this hotel on the BFT site. Parking is $12 and the complimentary shuttles to Disneyland work very well.

During the same time, my brother successfully bid for 2 rooms @$34. They were booked for a 4-night stay and had no problem getting adjoining rooms. Their rooms were nice, newly remodeled. They had no fridge, though. The hotel has converted many rooms to two-bed combos, to accomodate more sleepers per room. I was unable to get the hotel to accept a $34 bid for only two nights. If you look at the winning posts on BFT, you will see that nearly all the winning $34 bids are for 3-4-5 day stays.

Overall, I think this property is a good redemption value, especially since it was remodeled.

Vastly improved...

Posting from a 2 bedroom suite at the Orange County Regency, I have to give them a lot of credit for transforming to a very decent property over the course of 30 months during which I had 5 stays at the property...

Diamond amenity was a huge plate of roasted veggies with parma ham and tomatoes and mozzarella served with warm garlic bread and half a bottle of Estancia as usual....Easily the best Diamond amenity I had this year.

Hotel added some staff for valet and bell service as well as two doormen opening the doors for arriving guests. For an US property a great touch.

Everything was set up, when I arrived including packaged breakfast certs within key package.

Wired lan @ 9.95 per 24 hours is US Hyatt average....

Still plenty of free parking across the street, if you do not valet your car the way from the parking lot would be actually longer, so no reason for the expensive parking lot.

I actually stayed here again in June 05 for three nights. Upgraded to a 1 bedroom suite, which I understand they have a lot of.

A huge improvement from the first time.

I stayed here a few times last year and for the price ($59-79) per night it was quite worth it, however this fall I am not finding anything for this property less than $100+ bucks and to me it is not worth that price. Maybe it is if you are taking your kids to Disney but otherwise to me, its overpriced. I've gotten suites consistantly, but found it extremely noisy. I'm just looking for inexpensive properties to get FFN MC credits.. I will say on their behalf though, that they have taken care of any issue I've ever had timely and to my satisfaction and that they do deliver on what they promise.

Threy Oct 5, 2005 9:18 am

But where do you find a Hyatt in the greater LAX area on a weekday below $ 100 .

Not even on weekends the classic cheaper properties ( Valencia, Thousand Oaks ) drop below $ 100 consistently anymore...and the Regency DT is gone.

Just returned from breakfast, which was also vastly improved.

Miso soup was a nice touch as well as the smoothie.

I was there very recently on a not-cheap weeekend night (about $140). 1-800-check-in had apparently put me in a suite in the south tower, but when I asked on arrival for the north one, they said they had no real suites available in the north one, but gave me something they said was the size of a suite but one room. It had a HUGE conference table (which actually came in handy, as I was working and had about six different piles of papers), asitting area separated by drawers/large flat-screen TV from bed. I rather liked it, though I think the room would have felt even more strange had I not had so much work to spread on the table. Staff (except for concierge desk) was very sweet.

The staff at this hotel are outstanding. I have had 4 stays since June and got upgraded to a suite every time including a priceline stay on a holiday weekend. They even gave me 4 certs for the breakfast buffet on my PL stay. Every employee I came in contact with went out of there way to meet my requests. ^

We've stayed here several times in the past couple years, including 3 trips to Disney with the little ones. Our experience is similar to bbbb's. Pretty much everyone that we dealt with was great on all our trips.

Our little ones associate that Hyatt, and those white buses as being part of Disney.

Humorous stay so far!

We showed up last night and they didn't have our booking, not at all. I had a printed confirmation and without it I think it would have been a challenge -- they took the rate, stay length, everything from it. As we showed up late, maybe room choice was more limited. We ended up in a suite on the second floor (room 261) that clearly was intended more as a conference room with a bedroom appended than anything else.

First time I've stayed in a hotel suite where the sitting room had a largish sign stating "maximum occupancy 52!" The living room TV had a luxury hifi system -- from the 70s. I particularly liked the dual cassette tape players, too bad I left my 8 track collection behind!

The wifi was too weak to work in much of the room but eventually through a major intercession with their provider, they got decent wired service up. We had a whole bunch of people streaming in and out and eventually got extra towels, diamond amenity, cruddy florescents replaced with 100w bulbs, etc. Still as we appear to have the only occupied room on this level made up primarily of meeting rooms, I'm going to call to remind them to clean the room!

Through it all, everyone stayed in good humor and was willing to help. Nonetheless, it's a bit of a weird experience so far, I must say. Hey, there are two of us staying here, don't suppose there are 50 other FTers nearby who want to check out my room (wouldn't want to exceed the posted capacity)? :):):):)

RichardInSF Aug 25, 2007 12:43 pm

Let me summarize my experience after 3 nights stay. This is a family hotel in a mass market resort area. Service is friendly and good-natured in a bumbling, incompetent sort of way. The "fine dining" facility appears to be an Italian restaurant in the back of the hotel, but on weekend nights it is more of a nightclub than restaurant, complete with mounted Anaheim police watching over it. If you ask to speak to the GM, I doubt you would ever reach him or her. But if you come to this hotel with expectations appropriate to its level, price, and location, you will likely get what you expect.

Spent 3 nights there 2 weeks ago using extended FFN for families annual Disney trip. Was upgraded to a King Suite in the North Tower (as they do for us every year), and received breakfast coupons for all 4 of us (2 adults, 5 and 7 year old kids) - continental buffet at resturant - includes tip (upgradeable to hot buffet for $5 for adults ... though the waiter remembered us from prior years, and said "don't worry about it" for upgrade charge)

Anyone know where Hyatt tends to put large convention groups? I'll be there in May for National Academic Decathlon (likely 200+ rooms) and I'm curious if we'll wind up in "nice" rooms or get the bottom of the barrel.

Also, will I get gold points? We'll be paying the convention rate of $139/night...

Checking out today after three nights and my stay was just as richee. Got the upgrade to a king suite without having to ask and no problem getting breakfast certs for the four of us. Everyone at this hotel goes out of their way to take care of the guests. I just wist all Hyatts were this good.
