Diamond Room Upgrade

As a Diamond.....as i entitled to request an upgrade to a suite?

ar_elite Mar 9, 2004 12:53 pm

I believe I understand what your asking... Diamond members are entitled to the best available room, though as far as I understand, that doesn't include suites...

I am confused because I was recently upgraded to a suite as a Diamond although I have nver been upgraded to a suite in the Hyatt where I normally stay.

You are not entitled to a suite... but many properties will upgrade you to a suite. It all depends on the property and rooms manager who typically does the pre-booking.

There is no provision whatsoever in Gold Passport for suite upgrades for Diamonds, nor is there a provision for "best available room."

"Complimentary upgrades to Regency/Grand Club, or next best available guest room, based on availability at check-in."

“Next best” room is vague can mean almost anything, including a room with a better view, or even a king size bed. "Next best" room clearly indicates a category below RC, which is not a suite.

Also, in my experience the word "availability" can have many different definitions.

But, you can sometimes get the suite by asking. I get more suites at Hyatt than at Starwood, even though I am "guaranteed" suites at Starwood.

Suite ugrades are not part of this program. Consequently, you don't see a gazillion threads here complaining about not being able to get a suite when one was clearly available.

So .. if you've gotten one or ever get one in the future, consider yourself fortunate. We just never expect them, so we're never disappointed when we don't get them.

So, as I sit here in my really nice room at a Hyatt, munching on my Chocolate truffles, enjoying my two bottles of spring water, and as I sit on 6 FFN nights in the bank, I don't really mind that I didn't get a suite here tonight. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I see nobody has directly answered your question yet.

Yes, you are absolutely entitled to request an upgrade to a suite. In fact, this benefit is extended even to non-Diamond guests. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Has anyone out there been successful is recieving an upgrade without being diamond? I recently joined the GP program, and I'm wondering if I would be able to sweet talk... or sweet tip my way into a nice upgrade... Anyone out there have any stories or suggestions for an up and coming hyatt guest?

I have been able to get hotel and airline upgrades before I had status. It all depends on the agent. I don't have any personal experience in this regard with Hyatt though.
Anecdote:
One time a friend and I were staying at a Marriott with no status. When I checked in I dressed in a suit, and asked the agent if I could get an upgrade to the concierge floor. Agent said sure. Then about 2 hours later my friend checked in with another agent. The friends agent said no, you are not entitled to any upgrade. This person saw the agent I worked with, and he just got unlucky to get the strict agent. I think many things in travel and life just boil down to fait more than anything else. It can help you though if you are good at reading people. Usually even before I begin asking the exception question, I have a very good idea by the demeanor of the agent whether they will give me what I want. You just get a feel for these things, like a sixth sense, or like a hunch. It is probably accurate at least 90% of the time. If you get a bad vibe from one agent, ask the agent you get the bad vibe from "what time is it," and try to position yourself to ask another agent.

Do other people get these vibes too where you know if they will say yes before you even complete the question?

I have gotten some nice suites recently: one was at the Stanhope and I got an amazing Museum Suite. I checked in late and I think the hotel was full, and I got lucky.

Most recently, I really needed a suite at the Hyatt Regency in Greenwich for a business meeting and I have stayed there numerous times before, so I called a few days in advance and asked for a courtesy upgrade and I was accomodated with a very nice suite. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Not a part of the GP program.
But a number of the properties go out of their way to give suites at times to Diamonds which amounts to goodwill gestures. Some properties it rarely ever happens.
The bottom line is its great for Diamonds when it happens.
Its a win for the hotels because it builds strong loyalty.
And its a win for GoldPassport/ Hyatt beecause it has increased my own personal business over the last few years to all Hyatt properties.
And it cost them next to nothing as the room might go unsold otherwise.
It is simply exceeding expectations of the guest and the written program.
Way to go Hyatt.

The PH LA and DC always give Diamonds suite upgrades, unless the hotel is sold out (There are more 1 bedroom suites at these properties). The PH SF 50% of the time will give a suite upgrade.

The PH Tokyo and PH Paris will never give a room upgrade let a lone a suite upgrade. All other hotels pretty much upgrade diamonds to regency or grand clubs or large rooms.

The breakfast benefit is great. Usually saves me between 20-50 bucks.

Is that to say that I should lower my expectations of getting a better room than the Park Queen I reserved for my upcoming stay at the PH Paris?

At Hyatt in Cleveland, one time I requested early check in and rooms were not ready so when I went there later, they upgraded me to the Presendentail Suite with long living room, bedroom, very nice room with jacuzzi bath and shower and a dinner room, kitchen and butler's entrance :-)

Instead of eating out, I had things delivered and had Cava, strawberries, cheese and smoked salmon while I took a bubble bath. That was the only time though.
