The GH, on the other hand, was very warm, people greeted us every time we entered, plenty of open areas and spaces to sit, etc. and the Grand Club was one of the best I've seen.

I only went to the PH for drinks (while staying 4 nights in the GH), but aside from the view from the New York Bar/Grill, the hotel seemed very cold and uninviting. Even the carpeting walking to the elevators seemed out of place, like it was so plush it was absorbing your every move so as not to disturb anything. I didn't find it particularly inviting. But I also didn't stay in a room or use any of its facilities, so my opinion is not yet complete, just first impressions.

I can see how the hotel may come across that way to a first time visitor. It is a very formal hotel and the public space definitely has a different feel to it than the larger GH. The calm, quiet, exclusive ambiance is something I really love about the PH.
The service style is also very different and indeed more formal. As a regular guest of the hotel and customer of the restaurants the service I get is amazing and very "warm" and genuine. The hotel feels like a second home for me, and very comfortable and relaxing.
For me the exceptional service I receive makes every stay a pleasure, so the PH is the only choice for me in Tokyo.
For people who prefer the style of the GH service, it is certainly also a great place to stay in Tokyo. I also in particular would recommend the GH over the PH for families traveling with younger children.

PH
Thanks MikefromTokyo ! I booked the PH for 3 nights in April and looking forward to it. Have the package with breakfast, afternoon tea (prob not gonna use this ) and cocktails (this def will use).
Can understand the cold feeling that some might have with a PH, same in Shanghai PH vs GH. After staying in the PH Seould and Shanghai ....I became also a true fan of the PH^

Completed two stays (1 short one on points and couple of days later a longer one paid).
I've stayed at GH Tokyo several times and had each time (minor) issues regarding service at this property.
stay on points
Checked in on lobby floor, wasn't directed to Grand Club check in, but there wasn't any wait and I wanted to get to my room asap anyhow. Didn't get an upgrade, just standard room. Diamond amenity was already in the room, full bottle of red wine.
Check in agent never mention Diamond GC access, probably supposed I knew since I stayed there before, but still thought this was a little sloppy.
GC breakfast is fine although a bit more of a varied offer wouldn't hurt, especially if you stay here regularly for several nights. Should check next stay if Diamond breakfast is also available at French Kitchen...
stay paid
Arrived by taxi at front entrance plaza. My girlfriend and I had quite a bit of luggage with us, but no bell boy to be seen. Taxi driver was also suprised and event went inside to hail one, but came back alone. I grabbed our suitcases and bags myself from the taxi (with the help of the driver) and proceeded inside.
Checked in at lobby floor, again no mention of GC access. Got an "upgrade" to a deluxe king on the 4th floor. Very strange room layout. After spending couple of minutes there decided to ask for a change. Called reception... who were going to call back with a solution asap... 15 minutes passed, still no call. Called again and only possibilty was to get a standard room (which I had booked originally anyhow, but then again aren't Diamonds supposed to get the "best" room available?).
Received the Diamond amenity (full bottle of red) without asking.
GC service sometimes got a little sloppy during my stay, especially on busier mornings.
Generally speaking I feel that service could be a lot more personal here, especially if you're a return guest.
All in all this property remains my first choice when on business in Tokyo (mainly because of it's location), but hope that they try to add a touch more class to their level of service...

How far is this hotel from the Ritz-Carlton? Is it easily accessible via subway?

Im here now and am actually quite impressed by the Grand Club lounge spread...it's not like the GH Hong Kong, but it's pretty substantial. Hot soup, plenty of cold snacks, 5-6 wine choices, roaming servers pouring champagne, and refrigerators stocked with drinks make this quite impressive. The lounge is VERY crowded during the evening hours, but otherwise it is quite nice. My favorite aspect of the hotel is the free Internet everywhere in the hotel...quite appreciated!

A quick question: according to the spa brochure here at the hotel, it indicates that anyone with a Gold Passport membership gets free access to the spa facilties (sauna, hot/cold plunge, relaxation area, etc). While it is clear that other guests have to pay and that Grand Club guests get it free, it is not clear that if they mean either all Gold Passport guests get access or just elite members. Couldnt someone basically sign up before arrival just to gain access to the spa?

Actually yes... this is one of the selling points, and the morning coffee, that the front desk can offer guests when they ask about upgrades, but are denied due to no status, not wanting to pay for an upgraded room, etc.... at least the guests "think" they are getting something for free by joining GP...

Old 'New'
The Grand Hyatt in Tokyo reminds me of an office building; a sleek one, yes, but nonetheless an office building. And Roppongi Hills is hectic, with a manic, go for broke trendiness that contrasts very sharply with the inherently sleazy nature of Roppongi, with its greasy bars, pachinko parlors, porno shops, touts, street walkers, druggies, foreigner-wannabe Japanese and your garden variety traveller-in-heat. It is most certainly one of Tokyo's least patrician areas, despite pockets of contemporary architecture and attempts to be cultured (Mori Museum, the cold cement Ando-designed 20_20 Museum, and a new national modern art hall.)
Awhile back I hosted a dinner at the Grand Hyatt's Oak Door and it was a dramatic disaster. Bad food, bad service, and a predictably blah contemporary Hyatt style interior and tabletop style. The Lobby could be in any large office building in any large city. Like the Park Hyatt, the Grand Hyatt exudes a sort of non-descript, interdenominational, nationality-less 'modern' ambiance that says nothing whatsoever about Tokyo or Japan. You could be in upmarket Topeka if the staff weren't Japanese.
Tokyo is a fabulous place - with a stunningy distinct identity all its own. Why go Hyatt, Westin, Hilton, Sheraton, Four Seasons or Conrad in such an exotic Far Eastern capital? You know what you're going to find.

Wow Factor for this guest
Welcome to Flyertalk
Sorry to hear about your poor experience
We all have different tastes some prefer the exotic or local flavor and some prefer predicatable. My brief few day visit last year was sensational and I was in a terrible mood having become sick on my trip before leaving Australia
The hotel had a healing nature with kind team members beautiful design inside(even if it is has nothing to do with Tokyo)
I wasn't impressed with my room compared to some other Hyatt’s but it was certainly highly satisfactory.
The baking was spectacular in house and the Italian food in their restaurant I sampled there excellent or better then some I had in Italy.
The bakery next to the Italian restaurant is exceptional as good or better then some I have had in paris
The Regency Club offerings were about as good as good gets in any hotel world wide. I celebrate and toast this hotel for making Hyatt proud around the world against any brand or property.
It’s a brilliant property and an oasis for any leisure or business traveler lucky and privileged to stay there. Whatever this hotel may be may this quality standard be cloned in or out of the Hyatt family of hotels.
I greatly look forward to a future return when my travel schedule permits

Why not try a genuine luxury class Japanese hotel next time you visit Tokyo? They can be surrealistic but they are almost always eye-opening and fascinating culturally.
Is it the accumulate Hyatt perks and points that keep you at the Grand Hyatt?
It seems so... typical, and the sculptured 'mountain' in front is hideous, with one whole side of the hotel facing bland shops on a blah street. I have been in and out of the GH since it opened and as I have not had especially good things happen there, including one disastrous lunch - amazingly poor - I could never quite figure out why anyone other than possibly Hyatt fans and club affiliates might like it. But as you say, much of this is all personal taste. It is a NEW building.
I have received extraordinary service in the past from the staff at the Grand Hyatt in Hong Kong - very, very impressive service - but again, that hotel is one of those Asia-Goes-to-Versailles affairs in its vaguely embarassing lobby (cousins in style to the Westin Tokyo out in Ebisu), although the rooms are safely Hyatt and comfortable and modern and nice and ... predictable. (The Peninsula is my favorite in HK, but certainly not the one in Tokyo nor that horrid thing in Beijing.)

Booked one of my FFNs here next month since the PH was not available for awards. Noticed a Nespresso machine in one of the suite photos. Are these machines found just in suites, or are they in all the rooms?
