You need to be street smart any where you travel in SF, crime does not limit itself to the Tenderloin. I lived in SF for over 35 years, I've been robbed right in front of the Hyatt Regency 9:00 PM at night and pick pocketed just a few steps from the grand hyatt at 3:00 in the afternoon.. Union Square is known for that, waiting for the light to turn green, someone bumps you and your wallet is gone.
Misinformation.

The tenderloin does not start at Grant. That's still east of Union Square, and the tenderloin is by definition west of Union Square. We can debate exactly where the tenderloin starts, but the most conservative demarcation would be west of Mason or Taylor, several blocks to the west of Grant. And the eastern portion of the tenderloin is not that bad. The "dangerous" blocks are around Turk/Eddy/Jones/Ellis. Even there, it's really more unsavory than dangerous. You could probably walk it at 2 a.m. and apart from being panhandled, solicited, and offered drugs, have no problem at all

And Market Street east of 5th is nothing like the tenderloin. Yes you will see some homeless. But you won't see drug dealers and prostitutes.

Overall, there's very little street crime in SF, particularly in areas such as Union Square. The only truly dangerous neighborhood is Bayview/Hunters Point, and some of the other areas on the very south edge of the City. Oakland, where I live, is considerably more dangerous.

There is a much heavier police presence in NYC than SF.

This seems to be your big issue, and I agree, it's unfortunate the city has not dealt more effectively with the street people who hassle tourists in the Union Square area.

As a regular vistor to SF downtown I would also say your comments are so far off the mark it borders on being comedic.

Yes, you are entitled to an opinion, but lets stick with the facts, the Grand Hyatt is not in the Tenderloin. I was always of the impression that the Tenderloin was on the other side of Market St

Better read again....The post stated that it was near the Tenderloin, which it is. And the filth has a tendency to spill over, especially after dark. Nobody is claiming that the hotel is to blame or that it's serious. But denying it doesn't make it go away either.

What is it with this sticking your head in the sand behavior, do you simply get so used to being hassled by the homeless that you don't see it anymore?

But this aspect of the GH is getting blown way out of proportion. A bit of a warning that when wandering a few blocks you might encounter some less desirable areas is good enough.....

Because these comments are just plain wrong. The tenderloin doesn't "spill over" to Stockton Street. In fact, of all Union Square hotels, GH is one of the farthest from the tenderloin. You are confusing the fact that SF has a homeless problem with proximity to the tenderloin. Those are two separate issues.

If you're staying in the Hilton Union Square, you need to know not to turn left when you go out the front door. No such warning is necessary at the GH.

Nor is the GH's location any more "scummy" than any other part of Union Square, the Financial District, or Embarcadero. SF has a large population of street people and you will find them in all touristed SF neighborhoods.

Whether a single woman should walk solo from Moscone to the GH after dark is really a personal call. The risk of any trouble is very small, but sad to say that in most major US cities it is higher than zero.

Thank you for taking the time to answer, Kacee, joetro and all. I do appreciate it.

My apology for not taking the time to type out the full city name, San Francisco.

I assumed that since the thread was dedicated to the Grand Hyatt San Francisco and my question was about walking from the Grand Hyatt San Francisco to the Moscone Convention Center area, that it would be clear that I was talking about the Grand Hyatt San Francisco on Stockton Street and not the Hyatt Regency located at the San Francisco airport ...

I go to SF every year or so for the great food and to relax for a weekend, but honestly, it has gotten almost intolerable. The above quote is 100% representative of the problems. The city is so permissive and liberal in so many ways (not trying to start a political thing, just a fact) and that definitely seems to lend itself to the attitude towards vagrancy and such issues. People are just so used to tolerating and allowing it, that it is EVERYWHERE. We did not go to SF for a few years because of it, because it has just gotten out of hand. Also, if anyone thinks that vagrants walking around or asking for money has no correlation to people getting pickpocketed, robbed with out without a weapon, sexually assaulted, etc, then you are seriously deluding yourself. Those crimes are 100% about opportunity. I have stayed at the HR, GH and the Mark Hopkins, and can say I have easily found myself looking around and thinking "where did I go?" after like a 2 minute turn down 1 block from a nice area into a total hell hole.

Sorry it's not misinformation.

The official map of the Tenderloin District provided by SFPD
http://sf-police.org/modules/ShowDoc...cumentid=12045

Google maps also has it starting at Grant and Market.
https://www.google.com/maps/place/Te...5a70d852b4620a

I'm at 4th generation San Franciscan, I've been walking the streets of San Fransisco before my parents wanted me to... as soon as they looked the other way I was off... exploring the city.

Also... I had posted on here in December 2014 about my experience in OneUP... being propositioned by escorts. They gave me their card and I forwarded to management. Sadly nothing has changed, they were several escorts in OneUP during my last stay... I'm sure this happens at many hotels but at the Grand Hyatt SF it's pretty obvious. When we went for a walk there were women propositioning men on Sutter, next to the hotel. Walk down Sutter toward the Financial District homeless camps in the alleys. The homeless and the escorts are of little danger... but Union Square is known for pick pocket, and car vandalism, this is the case for most major cities in America.

As to the question is it safe to walk from Moscone Center to the Hyatt, yes it is, just be city street smart. Those who want to cause you harm maybe dressed in a suit and tie, the homeless in SF are pretty harmless, annoying and smelly YES! The best route from the convention center to the Hyatt is via 4th street, a more pleasing environment.

Let's return to discussing the property itself and not the city in general - we've dwelled on that long enough.

Appreciate if someone could provide info to contact GM at this property.

Stayed here recent and has significant problem with room (suggested they block suite ffor future reservations until they could fix problem). At check out, spoke with "front desk manager" who said she'd follow up with me via email and provide points for the trouble. I've not heard from her nor have I received the points.
Thank you!

The property had turned for the good when James was there, but since he has left, it's back to the way it was for Diamonds.

As far as the area, if you think the area is bad, then you probably haven't left your house.
