I think he meant Y14,000? That's what I paid for a night last month. The hotel was very nice and quiet. Their Regency Club was very nice - including the free drink/food selection during the happy hour. The only thing bothered me was...the lounge was not no-smoking!

I was not sure if it was fairly easy train ride for me to the central Osaka from the hotel. It almost took me an hour with 2 transits...I followed the directions from the Regency Club attendant though...

If you are in Japan for a longer period of time than your JR pass would be valid, don't start the JR pass just to use local rail services. Local rail services aren't that expensive. Try to pick the JR pass days so you are using shinkansen on most of them!

Even the ride in from KIX or from Osaka to Kyoto isn't that pricey. Also, many of the services to/from Nara are on private rail lines, wich don't honor the JR pass.

Edited to add: Y14,000 should be a very fair rate for this hotel.

we are using our JR Pass to Hokkaido first and then by the time we get to go to Osaka, it would be the 4th day of our 7-day pass - would use Shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka. not going to Nara, been there last time.

would go to Kobe and Kyoto (just to see the futuristic station at Kyoto though.)

JR passes have never been good on Nozomi shinkansen (the fastest ones on the Tokkaido line from Tokyo south through Osaka).

The bad news is that last October, JR revised their schedule and now most of the shinkansen on the Tokkaido line are Nozomi. There are still supposed to be two Hikari per hour, so it's not terrible, but I hope they revise the program before long since this change really stinks for JR passholders.

Also, make sure you don't get on a Nozomi by mistake, as you pretty much have to pay the entire fare, and Nozomi's don't stop very often so even the fare to the next station is non-trivial.

Yup. i know about Nozomi is excluded.

the timetable isn't too bad on other train.

my problem would most likely be "to make sure i dont get on the wrong train".

Now, how do i distinguish these two ?

All shinkansen lines have well signed track numbers, train numbers and destinations in both Japanese and English. It should be no problem -- just be on the correct platform and at the correct car number (marked on floor of station) at the correct time. In all of ten or so trips to Japan with much train riding I have only had a shinkansen be late once!

The Oskaka Hyatt RC has a decent breakfast. In the evenings it tends to be rather crowded -- I have been told to go back to my room and wait for confirming phone call when space in the RC was available.

If you are using the JR pass take the JR line from Shin-Osaka to Osaka; then transfer to the loop line getting off at "Bentencho" (get on the loop line in the direction going the shortest distance); transfer to the Chuo line subway (separate fare); get off at end of line station "Cosmosquare"; follow the crowd upstairs to the technoport line -- go thru the "maned" ticket booth as there ususally needs to be an additonal small fare paid -- most of the subway ticket machines don't sell the correct ticket fare that includes the technoport line -- this sounds more complicated that it really is; take the technoport line two stops to Nakafuto station (you will see the Hyatt on your left); upon leaving train station it is about a block to the hotel -- bear to your right and enter the hotel from the lower level, it saves walking around hotel to main entrance, although there are 8 or so steps down to this entrance.

BTW using your JR pass on Hokkaido and then down to Osaka -- this is a heck of long train ride . . . or are you flying from Sapporo to KIX?

I second the comment on the Nozomis -- they really need to rethink the exclusion of pass holders as the Hikari services have been drasticly cut back.

Please email me if you have more specific questions.

Thanks for the detailed info on how to get to Hyatt Osaka.

We are not going directly down from Hakkaido to Osaka. We have a break in Tokyo for a night before heading down again.

Though i just read a trip report of 2 couples who did take the Night train from Sapporo all the way to Tokyo and then switched train to Osaka, non-stop. That is a bit too much to me.

The days we will be at Hyatt Osaka are Monday and Tuesday. I hope they are less busy than weekend days. The room rate is cheaper so I assume their busy time is weekend (for Universal Studio and other entertainment places nearby).

It is permanent, RTWSTARALLIANCE. I have never stayed there because of few hotel shuttle bus before. It becomes much more convenient to stay at Hyatt property in Osaka.

is this a new service? Gee if they have had this before and I haven't used it I will really feel dumb. I am a little sick of the port line and train transfer -- ti's expensive and takes to long. I will be there again in January for 3 nights and using a JR pass so this will be very nice.
