Airport Transportation

The following thread and its wiki provide all the information one needs to know about taking a taxi from Suvarnabhumi Airport: Catching a Taxi at BKK and general Thailand taxi discussion [SEE WIKI FIRST] The wiki discusses the breakdown of taxi fares from the airport to central Bangkok where Grand Hyatt Erawan is located, and addresses the possibility of being slightly overcharged by a taxi driver.

Alternatively, Grand Hyatt Erawan offers airport transfers in its own fleet of silver Mercedes-Benz S-Class and E-class sedans. The prices of these service are S-Class THB 3,300 (net) per one way transfer (per post 1976) and E-Class THB 2,500 (per post 1975) to or from Suvarnabhumi Airport. Guests using this service will be greeted by a representative at the airport, assisted with their luggage, and escorted to the waiting car.

For an additional charge, the hotel can also arrange "Fast Track" (VIP lane) immigration clearance, as well as the option of being met at one's arrival gate by a buggy and escorted through Fast Track immigration. This service is available for THB 1,600+ 7% vat per person, or THB 2,400+ 7% vat per person to include Golf Cart and porter services.

AOT (and perhaps other companies) also provide transfers from and to the airport. Various vehicle types are available at different price points: Camry (THB 1,200 one way), Mercedes E-Class (THB 2,400 one way).

I always use http://www.limousine.in.th for my car needs in BKK incl airport transfers. 1050 THB from BKK to the city, 900 THB city to BKK (incl tolls).

UBER no longer operates in Thailand. Instead, use GRAB. Similar to UBER, prices will vary. On my trip, I was able to get a GRAB for 364 THB from BKK.

Taxi should run between 400-500 THB. If going from the hotel to BKK, the hotel will quote 500 THB. I had to wait for a few taxi's as the first two didn't want to do unless I paid 750 THB.

I am Hyatt Diamond and SPG Platinum. Debating between Hyatt and Westin for my upcoming stay. My corporate rate is almost same for both. Any recommendation on which one to choose please (for upgrade, lounge etc.)

Grand Hyatt Erawan, without doubt.

+1: Two very different hotels of which the Grand Hyatt Erawan is much superior.

That Westin is a fine, bland hotel that could be anywhere in the world. The Hyatt attempts to give a sense of being in Thailand and is very nice.

I wouldn't call it an attempt - the hotel is a very authentically Thai hotel. It is under Thai ownership, and is used heavily by locals for weddings and other social events, F&B, spa and fitness, etc..

Indeed- this hotel and the next door Four Seasons probably host more HiSo events than any others in BK.

If a passenger feels strongly about the meter, he/she should request that it be turned on immediately upon departure. I personally have stopped arguing with drivers about this, I really don't mind paying 500 baht for a forty minute ride.
Well, I did ask a number of times that he turn on the meter, all ignored. I haven't done the taxi from the new airport, last time I didn't have a luggage issue so used the train, and read somewhere that the taxi fare is about 200 plus tolls (which I paid-THB25-in addition.) Wasn't aware of the 50 baht airport fee, my bad. Having lived in China the past 3+ years, guess I've lost that tipping feeling, though I did make it up around town especially with other taxi drivers. So, karma has been restored.

What's not cool is when a tourist enables, or even encourage, the behavior of scamming tourist and going against the rules laid out by the Thai government. This kind of uncertainty in price may ultimately drive the demand for cabs down, which in turn hurts the cab drivers themselves. We already have a few anecdotal evidence from this post, where one would rather take the train to avoid the high probability of getting scammed. I for one take the car service provided by the airport (I think it's 1200 baht) since I hate getting bilked by cab drivers.

Stop enabling these cab drivers and exercise your right to a fair fare.

Maybe it's time to start actually reviewing the hotel again? It seems most we get for this property (followed closely by the Japanese properties) is transportation discussions. Plenty of separate threads about those and all options are easility found with a 2 minute Google.

And although you might still be getting ripped off taking a non-metered taxi, it's likely to be for something like $5.... Nothing to encourage, but hardly the end of the world for most of us.

So you have no problems with a local shop charging you 35% more than list price? That $3 beer is now $4? That $1.5 cup of coffee is now $2.25 etc???

Between Hyatt and Westin, I'd choose Hyatt - don't think the westin gets really good reviews. If the location of the westin is better for you, perhaps consider the Sheraton across from the westin. I've been to both the Hyatt and Sheraton (as Hyatt diamond and SPG platinum) and find them close to being equal. Sheraton doesn't have a lounge but gives (at least used to) breakfast in the restaurant buffet and evening drink in one of the bar / lounge.

Or, the IC across the street

The pool may be a little smaller than the GH, but everything else compares very favorably, especially a better Club lounge and lounge F&B selection. Better views as well. Of course, Ambassador status is $200 per year, or you can use points, or just book the Club room. The breakfast at Espresso on the mezzanine level was pretty terrific as well. Same friendly service you get at the GH, about the same price too.

For me the Four Seasons and the Erawan are the only options in the area. I do sometimes visit the nightclub at the IC, which is fun, but I still prefer Spasso.
