It would probably take 20-30 mins alone to walk from the road leading to the Grand Masjid to the entrance. We saw someone walk from the Ritz Carlton and were shocked to see someone walking in Abu Dhabi!

I've even seen people (invariably westerners) jogging and cycling on the Corniche in 47c daytime heat

1. We like to walk. Does a "stone's throw from the Grand Mosque" mean that it is within, say, 30 minutes on easily navigable streets suited for walking? (I realize it does not open to visitors until 4:30 pm on Fridays.)
2. Any other recommended museums or other sights near the Mosque and/or Hyatt, preferably within walking distance?
3. If we do take a taxi to get to the Mosque or anywhere else, is it easy enough to hail one on the street to get back to the Hyatt, or should we find the nearest shopping mall or hotel to do so?

Thanks for any help!

2. The Capital Gate is fairly unusual in that pretty much everything is within a 15-20 minute taxi ride, but there is really nothing at all in the immediate vicinity. For example, only the 3-4 hotels nearby (Aloft, Rotana, and a couple more) are realistic options for meals without jumping in a taxi.

3. The Mosque has a well-organised taxi rank for your return trip, as do most other tourist attractions and malls. Do note that it can be fairly busy during peak times and the lines might be quite long.

The Corniche is basically the main area for walking around (once the temperatures drop in the evening) but that's in the city, far from the Hyatt.

The Hyatt is really in the middle of nowhere. The times mentioned are usually taxi travel times. It is easy to find taxis in Abu Dhabi. They are much improved from when I first started visiting the city for business 10-15 years ago. I believe Uber also operates in Abu Dhabi.

Thanks for the useful replies, folks. Good to know!

Do you like Arabic sweets? If so, there is a lovely shop in the complex adjacent to the hotel. Friends lived in an apartment there last year and introduced us to the shop. Yum.

Thanks, SD1K. I love all sorts of Arabic and Middle Eastern dishes and all sorts of sweets (not least AA's ice cream sundaes). But I'm afraid Arabic sweets are not on my list.

But, FWIW, I found your recent post on the hotel very useful. Any other recommendations re the hotel or the area are most welcome, though I realize your stay was short.

Does anyone have any experience they can share for this hotel during the Grand Prix? Trying to decide if I would be better here or at the Park Hyatt (Grand might be opened by then too). Mostly curious about getting from the property to the circuit. Does the hotel offer any services or would it be taxi? Any idea of how far/long it would take to get to and from? Thanks!

Had a fantastic stay here recently - booked 2 rooms, one was upgraded to stunning Executive Suite complete with jacuzzi infinity bath! Made for a wonderful birthday present for my mum.

Service had stepped up considerably since our last stay and F+B gave us some truly personal provisions - camel milk in 4 flavours, sheep yoghurt, special menus etc. 18 Degrees is really great (esp sitting on the terrace) - the Entertainer vouchers offer 2-for-1 on mains.

During our stay there was an outstanding spa promotion (199 AED for hour massage) but they were fully booked - if you like spa, might be worth finding out what promotions there are before hand as it wasn't on their website

About 20 to 25 minutes. A taxi is available 24/7 at the stand outside the hotel entrance.

Does anyone have any insights re: Globalist benefits/treatment at this hotel? Are there any additional perks (transfer to/from airport, etc.) if one is staying in a suite?

I prefer the Park Hyatt (7 Photos)

Hyatt Capital Gate, Abu Dhabi

We had a 12 hour layover in AUH between flights and chose Capital Gate because it is easier to get to and from than Sadiyaat.

We booked two base rooms and I emailed to ask for one to be a Capital Suite and a connecting room, meaning the base room was upgraded to a Deluxe. Both requests were granted.

Because of EY's cost cutting we didn't get a EY Chauffuer Drive so booked the hotel limousine. I became irrritated when I saw the man holding the Hyatt Capital Gate sign was also representing many other hotels and it became apparently he was negotiating with other agents as to who would take us. Other than the sign there was nothing to indicate his association with Hyatt unlike other ports where a dedicated hotel rep greets you by name and takes you to your car.

He said "Wait, your call will be 20 mins." Needless to say I wasn't impressed.

Check In

We got to the hotel and went to check in on the 18th floor. Check in was painless but we weren't escorted to the room which I found odd. It didn't bother me but it's fairly standard at this level of hotel.

It was 40 degrees outside and very hot so we asked for some water and to their credit they gave us cold bottles of mineral water.

Room

If you have a fear of heights this is not the hotel for you. It has a huge atrium and I wouldn't walk near the balcony.

The Capital Suite is gorgeously furnished, luxurious and with high end materials. A large living room, smallish bedroom and a massive bathroom. The views were extensive, although obviously blocked by the building's steel frames.

The Deluxe room next door was sufficient however the air con console was inoperable and the room was extremely hot. I wanted to have a swim in the 15 mins before the pool closed at 8PM so told them to send the engineer while I was out.

When I came back the console was on but I couldn't alter any of the seatings. The room still would have been around 30 degrees Celsius. I called the engineer and he said "This is normal." I walked him through the connecting door to the suite where there was over a 10 degree difference in temp and he said "The suite has a bigger unit."

I pleaced my hand over the vents in the Deluxe Room and felt no cold air. Too late to move I told him I wanted it fixed. He then opened up one of the wooden panels in the room and "overode" the system settings to put it on 19 degrees. This was a ridiculous amount of time wasted just to allow a guest to cool their room.

One thing to note is that the rooms are mainly wooden decor meaning changes in temperature mean that the rooms creak during the night.

Some of the lights in the room were inoperable but given it was a short stay I didn't worry about it.

Photos below are from the Capital Suite

Service

I went down to use the pool and got changed in the spa. I don't know why but there is no direct entry from the locker rooms to the pool, rather you have to walk past reception. Being the UAE this meant getting undressed, putting your swimwear on and then getting redressed to walk back to the pool. Very poor functionality.

Swimming on the 19th floor towering over AUH was delightful.

Dining

We ordered room service and despite saying it would take 10-15 mins it was the standard 45 mins. Wouldn't have minded if they gave an accurate time, but we were tired and wanted to eat and sleep.

Location

Because of the height the views are greater than the PH, and only 10 mins from AUH.

Overall

Overall this is an ok hotel. It's pricepoint is about half of the PH and that is reflected in its service and clientle.

In future I will always choose the PH.

I prefer the Park Hyatt

Rebranding to Andaz

This hotel will be rebranded to the Andaz

Hyatt Hotels Corporation (NYSE: H) announced today that Hyatt Capital Gate Abu Dhabi will rebrand to Andaz Capital Gate Abu Dhabi, turning the iconic ‘Leaning Tower of Abu Dhabi’ into the first Andaz branded hotel in the Middle East. The hotel is owned by Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (ADNEC) and is expected to be rebranded in late 2018.

Andaz Capital Gate Abu Dhabi will offer 189 five-star luxury guestrooms and suites, occupying the 18th to 33rd floors of the iconic Capital Gate building, marking the world’s furthest leaning hotel at an impressive 18 degree incline. Each room will offer panoramic views from floor-to-ceiling windows, its own unique art, and locally designed comforts such as the hotel’s bespoke Andaz Loungewear. The hotel is adjacent to Abu Dhabi’s National Exhibition Center and will feature a variety of restaurants and bars, an art gallery, a spa, as well as a rooftop swimming pool and fitness center.
